Title: Must be doing something right for a change
Post by: NixRX7 on July 04, 2005, 10:10:59 PM
After all the things i have heard about the stock IC getting heatsoaked, and aftermarket filters doing the same i thought i better have a go at a bit of DIY and make up some heat shield / Ducts, especially after coming back yesterday and popping the bonnet and finding the filters/IC/IC piping to hot to touch.

SOOOOOOOO i started looking about for something to use as a heat shield, finding nothing i spied  our old tumble drier, a quick look inside showed a nice shiny drum ready to be cut up and used.

10 mins later i have a nice long length of Stainless Steel, 20 minutes after that and with the aid of a few rivetts and some old trim edge i had a nice shiny heat shield and duct.

Fitted it all in so the filters are protected and fed air from a gap by the rad and the original cold air feed.
The IC i used another piece to help get air up and toward IC.

Took the RX out today for about a 2 hour drive, got home popped the bonnet to see if my handiwork had any effect, i was pleasently surprised to find the IC inlet pipe quite hot, the IC itself only warmish and the IC outlet not hot at all, same with the filters, both nice and cold.

Dunno how much difference to driving it will make, and i doubt i\'ll notice it, but at least its one less thing to worry about and shows i must have done summit right for a change.

Well done!
I\'ve always felt that "heat-shielding" was a dedicated DIY job!  :p
I\'ve looked at various odds and ends to use for heat shielding.
Basically "HEAT" is a major part of the RX7 dictionary! :D...whether it be shielding or venting, i\'m sure there\'s no perfect answer

Yep, never throw anything away, you never know when it might come in handy.

Heres the pic of the heatshield, cant get one of the duct, cuz its buried under all the other bits.

The other bits just arrived form USA and i still have to fit them at some point

Looks like a torque brace to hold the engine steady and help eliminate mis-shifting up to 3rd  :god

Yup its a torque brace for the engine, got the pulleys, belt and the torque dampner from the states, cost just over £100 delivered for the lot.
All fitted now, looks much nicer without the air pump.

Good work , heat sheilding looks good

My heat shield is presently work in progress at the moment , removing air pump is on the to do list , how hard was it to get the old pulleys off ???

Also seems a good price for the gear where did you get it ???

The water pump pulley is easy, just the four bolts, the alternator is the real git, you need an air impact rachet to remove it, normal spanner wont do, as they are on really tight.

I got all the bits from Ebay USA the link to the guys store is http://motors.search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZccis99

Everything is well packed and fitted very well.

So have you got your own air compressor or did you get a garage to do it ???

I got a mate to do it, took 15 seconds to get it loose, then stuck the new pulley wheel on and used the air ratchet to do it up again.
Best bet if you dont know any one with a compressor is take the alternator to a garage and get them to do it for you, doubt they will charge you much, if anything at all.

Hey, i just realised i have one of those torque damper things already! well mine is only a brace, it has no damping, but it\'s definately there. I think it can be attributed to my car\'s mysterious racing history, it has a small plaque on the rear window from a tokyo race series, and there is evidence of a single turbo conv in the past too.

Doh , didn\'t think of taking the alternator off , was wondering how I was going to drive it to the garage , get them to loosen it so I could change it back at home , didn\'t fancy driving home with a loose pulley  :eek

Just got a mail back from that guy in the states , I asked him could he do the pulleys in silver instead of blue and that I also wanted a silver engine brace , says he can only do the pulleys in blue ( fair enough ) and he can only do the braces in red ?? however he\'s got blue and silver ones up on his site , very strange

Looks like I\'ll be leaving it for a bit anyway as the CO2 system looks like its in for a budget upgrade , damn

Thats a bit wierd Tintin, like you say he has different coloured ones up for sale.
I found him fine to deal with, perhaps he only has blue lieft in stock or something.
I know when i ordered i specified both in blue, and thats what i got.
