Hi all,
I\'ve looked around the forum for some answers but can\'t really find anything so sorry if this is a repeated post :)
I\'m currently in the market for a new car. I currently run a s13 200sx running 330bhp. However, its not reliable, and as lots of teething problems that are getting on my nerves.
I fancy something new, my 3 choices are Evo, Rx7 and Supra RZ..
What I would like to know is how reliable are rx7\'s? I know they need a rebuild after 50,000 or so miles.. but other than that are they reliable cars?
How easy are they to tune to 400bhp, and how reliable are they at that stage (Using conventional mods bigger turbo, injectors etc)
I took 1 out for a test drive yesterday, and had very mixed thoughts. It was on a forecourt for £10k, it had 34,000 miles, was an import, had a nasty flip paint job, hks bov, and s/s exhaust. The inside was very tatty, it had buttons missing, and flaps snapped etc. Personally I think it was very over priced, especially after seeing what £10k could buy in this clubs for sale section :)
The car drove lovely, and was very nippy, hardly any lag (made a nice change) but obviously by going down the conventional tuning route the lack of lag would soon disapear after doing a single turbo conversion..
The Evo is a bit out of my price range, I think with a Supra, or Rx7 you get more car for your money.
Which would you go for ??
Also, I have spied a few rx7\'s on ebay and in Autotrader from £4.5k upwards? why are they cheaper? and are they generally ok?
Finally what are the differences between the efini, and type r? and neither .
Many thx in advance,
Andy
Cheaper cars will likely be closer to that magic 50k mark, so factor in a couple of grand or so minimum for a rebuild. Having said that, it\'s not a hard and fast rule that 50,000 = rebuild, you could get another 10-15k miles out of one. The reliability of the car if modded will depend entirely upon the quality of the mods, who has installed them, and whether they\'ve been maintained/serviced properly, plus quite often a slice of luck. Like any other Jap \'tuner\' car, it could go for ages or it could all go bang. It sounds like your S13 has been down the lower end of the reliability spectrum, so maybe you\'re due some luck with your next one :)
There seem to be quite a few tatty ones out there, there is basically no reason whatsoever to compromise. I\'d advise either buying one off one of the people on here, as you know they will have been well looked after... alternatively, source one through a reputable import company like Newera. Either way, you should get a car in excellent condition.
One point worth remembering, you mention the car you looked at was an import like it\'s a downside - there were very few UK RX7s, and they actually put out less power than the JDM ones (I think 235bhp compared to 255/285, but I\'m sure I\'ll be corrected). There\'s nothing to stop you going for an import provided you get a good one, and I\'d guess that 95% of the people on here have one.
There\'s little point asking people on here what they\'d go for out of those three :) An RX7 is a very emotive choice of car. You have to take care of them and nurture them, and because of this they can seem like more \'hassle\' than conventional cars. However, if your heart belongs to the Efini, you won\'t consider anything else :)
It\'s a shame that you just missed GT Battle really, as I\'d advise going along to a \'meet\' where a lot of MRC users will be present. That way you can take a good look at a variety of cars in a whole host of tuning configurations, from standard through to "holy ****", and get an honest appraisal of the benefits/downsides.
Well i have owned an RZ and an MR2 Turbo, and the RX7 i have now is my favourite by a long shot.
If you are really serious about buying one, then i really would recommend you eiither buy one through the owners club, or from one of the dealers who advertise on here, at least then you are assured its a decent one, and if its off a member then it will have been looked after.
Mine is putting out 305bhp at the flywheel, and thats plenty enough in such a light car, and its a nice reliable output.
You should really be looking for one that has had a recent engine rebuild if possible, that way you get peace of mind as well.
I paid £7500 for my 94 RX7 with engine rebuild,uprated exhaust,ECU,Coil overs etc.
You do have to look after them, but its not that bad, just lift the bonnet on a weekly basis, check Oil/water levels etc, plug change every 3000 - 6000 miles.
If you want to have a car you can just get in drive and then park at night and forget about then get the RZ, if you want something that is more of a drivers car and will turn heads and leave you with a smile a mile wide every time you drive it then get the RX7
Efini is just the JDM RX7, the various types are R,R2,RB,RZ,RS if you look in the section on buying an RX7 its all explained for you.
go here for all the info you will need on buying one.

Thats excellent guys, thx a lot :)
Of course you should buy the RX-7 !!!!
Not sure how going single turbo reduces lag? One feature of the sequential setup is less lag than a big single turbo.

Thats what I said :)
