Title: Hot hot hot!
Post by: dandan on June 27, 2005, 05:36:23 PM
Got my first Rex last week, 92 FD3S black import, it was modified by panspeed in japan, has a very large intercooler in place of the original, I do have the panspeed ECU in a box, so it is chipped to run on rubbish british fuel.
The problem I am having is that after ten-fifteen mins of running at less than \'A\' road speeds, the water temp dial goes up as high as 108! i turn the heaters on full to counter this but i\'d rather it didnt happen in the first place. I think the rad might just have water and no coolant, would this affect it, or is it just a fact of life when the large intercooler is sucking up all available cold air?
I know i shouldnt be driving slow anyway, but its britain, what do you expect!?

GET SOME WATER/ANTI-FREEZE IN THERE NOW!!!!!

This is one of the quickest ways to kill an engine. A large front mount will brings temps a little higher when sitting in traffic, but on the move you shouldnt notice any difference.

Check the water levels and fill if needed.

have you checked your fans are coming on. I think they should come on at 92 on a stock ecu and temps really shouldn\'t get any higher than that with the engine runing. I suggest firing it up and opening the bonnet. Watch the water temps and check where the fan comes on.

i have large front mount but larger pwr rad on the move the temp is 85-89 in traffic up to 94 and then fans click on..when in doubt click air con on no 1 and the fans will run all the time but shldnt really be seeing temps over 100 check coolant levels and if in doubt syphon some out and add neat antifreeze just in case u have a really weak mix

Is there a thread anywhere on "how to change the coolant?" Ive seen high temps recently and Im a little concerned although they aint too life threatening to the engine but Im convinced it should be alot lower, been for a long drive today and with the air con on Ive seen better temps although I shouldnt have to have the air con on to lower temps and lets face it, we could all do with saving the fuel too.

I personally think I have too strong a mixture of water rather than coolant and like to rectify it but cant find a thread on how to go about changing the coolant.

thanks guys :)

do a search for posts by carl on this he gives a very comprehensive and accurate method..short method isto drain system ie remove rad hose then refill slowly burping the syst by squeezing rad hose and keep topping up until level is right.carl suggests removing one of the pipes on the bulkhead and using lemonade bottle as a funnel/reservoir until mixture flows from the back pipe(lots more detail in his post)i have also added some millers water temp reducer but it has only made a small difference..mine in warm weather runs at about 89deg and quickly reches 94 in traffic but fan then kicks in.but i do have a gert big front mount in the way

So how many of you run the A/C all the time? used it again this morning and noticed the temps stay about 89ish turn it off and its up to about 94ish... I know its freakishly hot weather at the mo but all the same.....

right, i checked the coolant last night and it is about an inch from the top of the filler cap when cold, the level in the expansion tank is good too, so no problems there. I\'m sure i have heard the fans coming on before, but didnt check, if they are not kicking in could it really raise temps that much? I also noticed that i am reading the temp off of an aftermarket gauge installed in the double din slot, the standard dash gauge never reads high at all, which one is more likely to be right? I will try and get the fans going tonight and report back.

if your fans aren;t working your coolant will get way too hot.

Panic over, thanks for the advice everybody!
How relieved was I last night to find that the sensor/switch isn\'t turning the fans on at 92/94 deg so it just kept getting hotter. I switched the air con on, the fans started and the temp shot down to 82 and stayed there all night long!
So does anyone know where this switch/sensor or whatever might be located so i can check it is working, or replace it etc?

I might have a similar prob actually, so once it gets to 92 it should cool down yeah???? if I run my air con it stay mid to low 80\'s sure Ive seen my fans come on before though, just a bit late.
