Title: Hurley rebuild
Post by: hillery69 on July 25, 2003, 07:11:09 AM
Had my engine just rebuilt by Hurley, they street ported it for me, fitted 3mm rotor tips, duplex side seals and an upgraded water pump. They did a great job took them two weeks like they said did it for a good price for me and gave me a 2 year waranty on the rebuild. I could not recomemnd them more highly. Should be running about 280bhp once it is run in.

The price was around £3500 but that was a full rebuild with 3mm tips, duplex side seals, street port and a uprated water pump. I also had a few other parts that needed changing such as exhaust heat shield.
Title: whats about a new engine?

I dont know about my question is right here. So please move it to somewhere in case it\'s not right here.

So you have payed 3500 bugs for your rebuild. You\'ve got you old engine (maybe with old rotorhousing, dont know, so please tell more about things that were done), and "old" rotors wich were reworked for 3mm tips.

What you got is an engine, with lover compression, and huge old parts.....  in compare to new engine.

Of couse, the new engine will not have any "goodys" like ported sideplates, or 3mm tipps.  But you will get a NEW engine!

Its unusal to go for rebuild here in Germany. Mutch easier is to buy a NEW engine for about 300 bugs more than rebuild. In UK, it seems to be unusual to put a new engine.

What dou you all think about it all?  Compare NEW engine vs. rebuild

Iwan, the main difference between buying a new engine and a rebuilt engine is that a new engine will not be ported in any way, where as a rebuilt *COULD* be.

Plus trying to get a new engine from Mazda themselfs would be a nightmare, as I think Clive had the last one they had! :(

When you say new engine, do you mean a brand new unit from Mazda that has never been run, as I am sure that there would be plenty of people interested over here in the UK.

Hillery, speak to Carl on here, as he might be able to sort you something out.

Hi Dan,

Yes, I mean a brand new unit from Mazda that has never been run.

yes you are right, you will not get any features like porting or 3mm seals.

Every Mazda dealer can purchase a new unit from central storehouse in Belguim.  (well, German dealer do it this way )

Iwan,
I think that you will find that the price has just gone up in Germany, over here we could get a new engine for around 3000 pounds but now they are over 5000 pounds.
The price went up a few weeks ago.I have asked for an explanation but none is forthcoming.
Kind regards
Carl

Hi Carl,

I have called my Mazda dealer and asked him for engine prices:

The engine (only the block without manifold etc) costs in Germany 5927 EUR regular price. Its about 4150 GBP.

I will get the engine for about 5500 EUR, its about 3850 GBP.

3850GBP for brand new engine vs. 3500 GBP for a rebuild.....

Iwan, but I am sure that Mazda UK would charge a lot more than that for a new engine. And if we was to purchase it from Germany we would then have to pay the shipping, duty and VAT on this price.

Hi Iwan,
I would double check that price and also availability as I know a few days ago there were no engines in Belgium.
I was told the old price until I wanted to order an engine then it went up to the figure I quoted.
PS Not all rebuilds are that price and the price usually includes alot of parts that are replaced external of the block like gaskets and things,so the price for the rebuild is not just the shortblock.
Don\'t forget that someone has to remove and fit the engine too, this is more expense on the new block that is included in the rebuild price for the old engines.
My price for a straight rebuild including removal
and fitting is less than 3500 pounds.
Kind regards
Carl
