Title: The best $27.95 you will spend on your car
Post by: paultakata on June 25, 2005, 09:48:15 PM
It doesn\'t make it faster, louder, shinier, or sexier.

It isn\'t cool, but you will want one :yes

As fitted to my FD, behold the Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve :eek :

Yes, it\'s a tap for your sump! No more boiling oil up your arm! No more fishing for the sump plug in filthy oil! No more generally nasty mess! And it only costs $27.95 including shipping from http://www.fumotovalve.com/ :D Size F106 fits FD\'s and most other Mazdas, that is what you see in the picture.

And no, I don\'t work for them  ;)

the simple ideas are usually the best !

so how do you open the "tap" then ?

My photo wasn\'t taken from the best angle, unfortunately. On the far side of the valve is a small handle thing which locks into place when shut, as in the photo. You lift the handle to unlock, and turn it 1/4 turn to open. This is from their website:

It makes you wonder why no-one thought of it before, I mean, we have only been changing engine oil for 100-odd years now!

Just one small worry ??? What happens if a stone hits the handle and happily opens the tap ?? Does look a cool gizmo though !

The handle is held in the locked position by a spring, and is pretty stiff to open as well. I think you would have to hit it on a log or a large rock to have any chance of it opening, and anyway, you can always put a pipe clip on it to stop the handle from being lifted up.

As they say on their website: "Over 2,000,000 Engine Oil Drain Valves have been sold in the past eight years and no problems have been reported."

I don\'t think that anyone here goes off-roading in their rotaries (although I am willing to be proved wrong :) ) and so I don\'t think there is anything to worry about.

Not intentionally maybe but a fair few managed it this past winter..!  Generally they\'d have more to worry about than leaking oil though.

If some kind soul (with more time on their hands) would be interested in organising a group buy on this then I\'m sure they\'d be on lots of people\'s christmas card list...

Dear Mr. Harrison

We have considered the proposal you made in your email of June 27.

It would give us great pleasure to supply "Engine Oil Drain Valve" to
Mazda Rotary Forum members.

We should like to offer this to you, and therefore prepared to give you
a special discount of 10% for 10 or more and 15% for 30 or more as a group
buy.

Thank you for your consideration. We await your reply.

Best regards,

im not even sure i want one !! LOL ( or would it be rude not to ?? )

i have emailed the company again to see what we can do about shipping - it could work out expensive if "someone" has to re-send them out from the uk

so im gonna try and do it so that "someone" orders them all and supplies all the address - and then they send them all out to you guys

bear with me until they get back to me - nice list though !!

Ian, AFAIK, this size of valve fits all Mazdas except some with a Ford engine, so it should be fine. You should check that the drain hole is not recessed into the oil pan though, as you will need an adapter if it is.

Doing as one order will save $4 per item international postage but at the effort and cost of postage within the UK.

Whoever ends up organising this could simplify matters by asking group buyers sent them a stamped & addressed jiffy bag prior to it being sent out and thus reducing the actual cost.  I\'d also suggest cash up front with a strict sut-off date...

I would say that for those on the list that come to the Dartford meet, it might be an idea to get them posted to one person and they take them to the meet. Thus cutting down on the postage costs. ;)

Just before I order....

I take it its just the normal F106 that fits the FD, or do I need the one with nipples and/or adapters?

Does it fit to an existing part ?

Most important thing is you absolutely need to get axle stands to do this.  Don\'t use the emergency jack and don;t trust a hydraulic jack either.

It\'s a really simple job to change and you can do a full oil change at the same time and save yourself a trip to a mechanic :)

Check the downpipe nuts on the underside while your under there, dont know if this is a common problem but I had mine come loose a while back, might have just been shoddy work by garage who fitted it

I guess you are right, the car has to go up...I don’t have an axle stand so this will have to be done on my next trip to REWORKS. Better save then sorry

Thanks 4 the tip...

Yup, the normal one is fine, no adapter needed. The ones with nipples are meant for stationary engines, marine engines and the like where it is impractical to put a plastic tub under the drain hole. You push a rubber hose onto the nipple and drain the oil to somewhere more accessible.

Know what you mean. Did an oil chage in the drive. Cost about 20 quid for the oil and the filter. Plus the motorfactors had the filter listed in the book  :eek. Will i get more oil out if i lift the car on blocks and keep it level ?

Probably not a significant amount.  most of the oil that doesn;t get changes is in the oil cooler piping and cooler(s) from what I\'ve read.

Are people still going ahead with group buy or using the 10% discount we have been offered?

If group buy is going ahead I need knocking off the list cos ive already ordered one with discount, think a few others may have too.

Very easy to do BTW, there is a discount code section in online order form, enter [removed] and it will knock 10% off straight away

I think the current plan is that Danny (fish) will organise a mini-buy for people who can collect the plugs at the pub meet and save $4 postage each.  We\'re basically that tight. :D

I could be wrong though.

Sorry if that messes things up !

Has anyone fitted one of these valves, are they as good as they claim to be?

I know the last post before this is a few years old so I’m hoping most of the people who wanted to order one will have some decent feedback.

I have ordered my RX-7 from Jimmy’s RX-7\'s and just waiting to pick it up in the next couple of weeks. So was wondering if I should fit this valve when I first change the oil?

Cheers,
James.

Yeah, I fitted one last year, I\'ve a done a couple of changes since, and so far it\'s held up fine. The valve still works fine and it\'s not rusty at all.

Iain,

This thread was dug up from over a year ago! You don\'t really need to doa group buy, they\'re very reasonably priced anyway, and the shipping was very fast from the US to me.

A useful little valve, I wouln\'t say I couldn\'t live without it though!

has anyone with standard twin turbos worked out a way of removing the oil filter without taking the intake elbow and throttle body off yet!? then an oil change really would be easy. if only they had mounted it a few mil further out.

If you loosen the filter off a little then drain all the oil out of the engine, when you come to take the filter off completely, most/all of the oil should of drained off so you wont have an problem in getting oil everywhere and the filter should be easy to take out

it\'s not the fact that it will be messy, it won\'t physically come out unless i remove the elbow and tb. i thought it may just be my car but it was the same on mooseman\'s FD. you can unscrew it a certain way but then it just hits a screw and won\'t go any further.

You sure you\'ve got the correct filter on, then? Never had a problem changing filters. Used 3 or 4 different brands over the years - they are all small and quite compact in size.

I\'ve been using the Mazda originals (got a box of them a few years ago) and they\'re easy to get off.

sounds like there\'s something raising the height of the take off, maybe a plate for oil temp sensor?
