Title: Rattling Cat!
Post by: nikp on June 24, 2005, 06:43:41 PM
Having got through to the point of removing my CAT in the process of replacing my clutch, i noticed a slight rattle coming from it. So, my theory is that is has started to break up inside - but it\'s not rattling much.

So, i thought i\'d ask you clever people what options i have.

Should I:

1. Put the existing CAT back on, and see how long it lasts?
2. Get a replacement CAT and fit that (Bearing in mind i eventually plan on secondary injectors, fuel pump and Apexi ECU and therefore could replace the cat with a CAT replacement pipe)
3. Purchase a CAT replacement pipe and just be careful at WOT until i get the injectors, fuel pump and ECU.

Money is a factor as the clutch was an unexpected, but necassary purchase. So I\'m thinking about just fitting the CAT back on and see how long it lasts - would there be any detrimental issues to me fitting a slightly broken CAT?

if the cat breaks up it can block the outlet side of the exhaust causing probs.
not had much to do with rx7\'s but when mine went on an mx3 i removed it  and finished the job of with a bar to clear it out then reffited the empty shell.

How long till your car is up for MOT?
Don\'t know whether you need a cat for MOT, but if it\'s some time before next MOT, I\'d do what jon said, empty it. It\'s a gonner already ayway.
Had the same on my MX-6, but left the last (tiny :)) good bit in, as a cat is mandatory overhere in NL.

Unfortunately i do. Cash is a problem. As is time. I need to fit my intercooler, which requires me to fit my battery in the boot. Once that is all done, i can consider removing the cat, so i can get her mapped. Gawd! Why is everything so complicated!?

Any volenteers to help relocated my battery to the boot at the weekend!? :D
