Newbie definitions thread:

Could people post up definitions of frequently heard phrases on this website?  Would be really helpful to people like me who are keen to learn more but just don\'t know yet!  Could people spare the time, when they are posting a thread, to perhaps just put up a quick definition of the technical terminology?  Two to start:

Apexi:

Porting:

Thanks for your time! :p

Apexi: Could mean a couple of things, mostly for the PFC which is an aftermarket ECU. This allows for future modifications to run the car with a safe level of fuel and ignition. It could also mean a front mount intercooler (FMIC) or air filters.

Porting: standard porting always needs to be enlarged so that more power can be had. The bigger the ports to more air that can be put in to it.

Search Button: A great way to find answers to questions... :D

porting is the holes in the rotor hgousing that allows the air and fuel in and the exhaust fumes out... the larger the holes the more fuel is burnt and hence more power

different type are street port, bridge port, J port...

Not exactly phrases, but they are things that had me scratching me head when i first saw them.
FD3 = 3rd Generation RX7
WOT= wide open throttle
TPS = Throttle posistion sensor
LIM = Lower intake manifold

Probably lots of others as well that i cant think of at the moment, might be a good idea to make a sticky somewhere with a glossary of terms

Thanks guys

Would be great if one of the mods could make this a sticky to be added to?  Is there a way of making it just one list in one thread that people can add to without it becoming lots of different posts?  I know you can search, but to have them all in one place would be great.

Thanks for that link James, user friendly layman\'s definition list, can we pinch it and add it to here??

More things make sense already!

FC
 Represents only the Second Generation Mazda RX-7 being that the letters "FC" are only found in the 1986-1991 RX-7s VIN Number.
FD

 Represents only the Third Generation Mazda RX-7 being that the letters "FD" are only found in the 1993+ RX-7s VIN Number.
LIM
 Lower Intake Manifold
UIM
 Upper Intake Manifold.  It is the unique four-barreled intake made of aluminum positioned directly above the 13B Rotary Engine
AST
 Air Separation Tank.  Although this is not RX-7 specific, it is used a lot in forum discussion
99 Spec
 This refers to the version of the RX-7 created in 1999 only produced in Japan.  It has a slightly different body style and increased reliability.
SMIC
 Stock Mount Intercooler
FMIC
 Front Mount Intercooler
PFC
 Apexi Power Full Computer.  A programmable engine computer unit
BOV
 Blow off Valve.  When throttle is let off turbocharger has excess boost that is discharged through this valve.  It makes a nice whistle when car is driven spiritedly
WOT
 Another term that is not RX-7 specific.  It stands for Wide Open Throttle
AF ratio
 Air to Fuel ratio.  Rotary engines require a richer mix of fuel to air to prevent pinging/detonation caused by the engine leaning out
NA
 Normally Aspirated.  (Not turbo)  Car with no mechanical means of "ramming" air into engine.
"Bump" or "^" or "TTT"
 Forum slang for bumping a thread higher in the list to get read.   "To The Top"   It is then the most recent topic.  Also used if a question is asked and no one responds

what does IMO mean? and does TBH mean "to be honest"?
Title: Definitions

IMO - in my opinion

TBH - to be honest

A pillar is the windscreen pillar ... any others are lettered from front to rear. so B pillar is the middle one in a 4 door car and C pillar would be the rear one.

Tubbed means that the rear arches have been cut away internally and made much larger to accept bigger wheels and untubbed means that the inner arches are standard.

PORTING: (taken from another post..)

Porting increases the size, and thusly the time the port is \'open\' within the combustion cycle, this allows more air/fuel (if the porting is on the induction side) mixture to enter the engine and faster expulsion of the exhaust gases. (exhaust side)
Thats just a very basic overview, I think its 90% right too!  Also bear in mind that larger ports extend the time the port is open which has other knock on effects.

13b = 1.3L twin rotor engine (used in Rx7)
20b = 2.0L triple rotor engine (used in Cosmo)

A good list of all the variants can be found here:

I think the 13b is the late eighties engine, fitted to the series 2 cars.
12a was fitted to the series 1 (78-85)

Not sure about 20b tho... :confused:

FB FC FD do NOT apply to the type of engine, but to the body type. In fact, they are the first letters of the chassis number.

I would still like to know if my estate has a "d" pillar anyone?
