Not sure what you mean by \'charge\'. Being a 91 it probably has R12 in it - now illegal I believe - ozone damaging etc etc. Newer cars have R134.
I had a hell of a job getting mine re-gassed. Now there is a replacement gas which is great so far.
They will just fill the system until it\'s full - probably put a dye in it as well which will show up any seeps/leaks if/when they occur. Visible with a UV light.

The charge is the amount in weight that goes into the system.
Your right about R12 being illegal I have the replacement which is a direct swapover. The charge is quite critical though as to much or to little can cause compressor failure and poor running etc.

Thanks Danny

My Cosmo was on the r12 system there\'s a guy on ebay sells diy aircon service kits and adapters to convert the R12 filler and test port to R134 spec. Easy to convert and fill the system yourself, took less than 30mins on the Cosmo to convert and refill system.Service kit was £34 plus delivery and adapters about £2 each i think. Only took two days for delivery and i\'ve still some gas left from the kit for topping up. http://www.car-air-conditioning-supplies.co.uk/

Does this mean that everyone else\'s aircon has packed up in the hot weather as well?

Small thread hijack here...

I have noticed my cold air getting warmer, is it easy to get it \'fixed\', and by the sounds of it do it myself?

Cheers

Mine works but has never been great so will get it sorted tomorrow.
I\'m an air con engineer by trade so I\'ve got the tools to do it but its not something  you can do at home.
Kevin did you vacuum the system before you refilled it?

Cheers Danny

System was fully drained while engine mods where carried out.Red dye into system first to check for big leaks, then UV dye combined with small leak sealer and oring conditioner, oil next then filled with R134a. Just a case of following instructions supplied. Air cons working spot on now, best £34 quid spent this summer as the weathers been recently.

The reason i ask is that whenever you refill you should use a vacuum pump first to take out any air or moisture in the system but then your looking at spending another £200+.
Still if its working fine then i would\'nt worry to much.

Not sure if this info is any help to anyone, I found it in the manual (it\'s a US manual I have mind you). It means nothing to me, but might make sense to someone who understands air-con systems; -

Heating and Air Conditioning Systems

Refrigerant amount - 600 g
Compressor oil amount cm3 (Nippondenso compressor) - 100-140
Refrigerant normal pressure at 25 degrees C kPa - Low pressure 147-294, High pressure 1,275-1,472

Cheers mate, I\'ll bare that in mind.

I had the air-con for the first time the other day. For some reason a smell of, what I can only describe as BO, comes out of the fan outlets. Is this common to air con systems? I\'m reluctant to use the air-con anymore, however if it gets as hot as it has been recently then I don\'t think there\'s much choice in the matter.

Cheers

Thanks for this address Kevin! helpfull guy called Chris. http://www.car-air-conditioning-supplies.co.uk/ i have ordered a diy kit, to refill, that is compatible with R12 & 134, as i am not sure which one was put in when my compressor was changed before i got the car, i just need to know which is the top up or fill valve now, marked red or black!

You can\'t get it wrong there both different sizes and it only fits one.Did you remember the adapters if its on the old r12 system.Old r12 system has small screw thread fittings.R134a larger fittings that take a quick release coupling on the fill pipe.

i THINK IV\'E MESSED MINE UP! I got a replacement or drop in D.I.Y. gas, and connected the hose supplied to my system which i am pretty sure was completely empty,The gas is R413a, apparently one which is suitable to mix with R12 or 134 should there be any dregs in the system from when the compressor was changed before i got the car.  but i think i put too much in if that\'s possible! the compressor clicks in for a short while then starts cycling on--off on--off, loading the engine so much that it will stall the engine! any help from anyone much appreciated,
Cheers Bob

Did you put any oil in the system after you vacuumed it?  What are you seeing in the sight glass?

(BTW, for those FC owners out there, I repaired my aircon system then recharged with RC29, I tested the system for leaks with RC22 which actually ran colder, but there you go, cant win \'em all!)

Thanks Brett,i was told there was no need to vacuum the system and would not know how or have the equipment! in the sight glass before i added the gas i could see a green oily fluid with a lot of air, but there was no gas in it i\'m sure. now there is i light green fluid with no air bubbles at all, seems D.I.Y. is false economy, buit whats best to do next? Help!

Right heres the info you need :-

600g of the appropriate Refrigerant gas. (Note some of the compound gases must be filled correctly or they will lose some of there effectiveness)

100-140g of Nippon Denso Compressor oil/Lubricant

Pressures @ 25degC :-

Low = 1.5-3.0 bar (20-45 psi)
High = 13-15 bar (185-213 psi)

I hope that helps, I got it out of the Mazda workshop manual :)

Thanks again Brett, i think the next step for me is to get a pressure guage on it,and see what it is now, apparently there is a charge of 1000g in the DIY can, i think there is more than 600 g in the system but difficult to judge, at a guess 800g!  comparing cans, diyourselfers beware, next stop will have to be a proffesional.
Thanks  Bob

No problems mate :)

A word of warning to all of us, venting refrigerant gas is a crime and could cost you £1000 fine, if in doubt get a proo to do it, it wont cost you that much!

venting of refrigerant in this country is more serious than rape or murder upto
5 years prison or 20,000 fine!

do you know if the system was recharged when the compressor was changed if not it would definetly need vacuuming to take out any air and moisture.

What ar you supposed to see in the sight glass ???

I don\'t see anything in mine its just empty , air con works fine , just wondering if it needs servicing

you should see nothing if its working fine.if you get someone else to switch it on while you watch you will see some bubbles then it will go clear when the system gets up to pressure.
