Title: reliable drift RX7
Post by: D3S on June 22, 2005, 11:19:46 AM
Well i will soon be getting my RX and it will be used for drifting next year. Just a few basic questions and needs to know.

1.Want reliability
2.Constant supply of fuel for when its going sideways
3. To stop oil starvation
4 keep charge temps and water temps down as much as possible
5.to set it up for both track and drift work.

I am sure i will have more.

Cheers

What sort of RX7 ?

and reliability is going to be somewhat relative to how hard you are using a car :)

Get yourself a TII non-turbo RX-7. Then upgrade the fuel system and radiator.

Get yourself a TII with a Turbo!
Swirl pot and lifter pump for the fuel,
Oil system is very good, at the most, baffle the sump,
Have 2+3/4 inch rad made at local radiator shop.
Get electric fan from scrap yard, have fan on switch, have red light for off! not on.
Replace front Diff seal before you even start, lock up the passive rear wheel steering.
Become good friends with local tyre place.
Water injection would be a good idea, so you can keep the top mount intercooler and retain the throttle response.

question is can you afford to bend it ?  and is it a good car to learn in ?

Not really.  Lack of space for wheels/tyres.  Not much steering lock.  Poor turbo transition unless you go non sequential or single.  Cost of fuel to go to practice events as theres not likely to be one on your doorstep.

You could make a good drift car from one, just not so good for learning in.

does drifting not put major stress on the engine, heat etc

Heat can be an issue yes.

Ok then, well the best thing is to ask, how can i reduce the factors i asked and how to build the car reliable? lets not worry if its going sideways or not ;)

1. Have your engine rebuilt
2. Swirl pot and lifter pump
3. The FD sump is baffled as standard
4. Aftermarket front end with bigger opening for rad, 3 row copper rad and fan controller, so they are permenantly on when your drifting and when the engine is not running after track abuse. PWR chargecooler.
5. Tyres, a standard FD in good condition handles most things thrown it\'s way.

Go to some practice days, //www.conedodgers.co.uk and see how it goes, I\'m happy going sideways in an FD, and I\'m rubbish at drifting! I learnt in an S12 with a welded diff and rock hard suspension. Give it a go.

Matt,

Cheers for that mate, the reply i was looking for :) Can i ask what a lifter pump does?

Rad wise i was gonna go for a V-mount setup and look at water injection maybe or if i can custom fit a fan i will, bonnet is already vented, so that should aid cooling plus it has an aftermarket nose.

The plan is rebuild, single turbo, v mount, standalone ecu, bigger injectors, larger throttle body and hope for around 450-470 bhp. And make it strong and reliable thats my main aim!

Thanks for your help

its to lift the fuel out of the fuel tank and into the surge tank/ swirlpot which then feeds to the high pressure main pump.

Ahh i see yeah, well makes sense really lol Who makes this lift pumps? Bosch maybe?

You can use the standard pumps as lift pumps, then bolt the uprated pumps after the swirl pot.

My friend/business partners FD in Yokohama is running BNR33 (GTR) pumps, seems to be a popular mod, i can get hold of these really cheaply so would it be worth looking at these?

Also does anyone run v mounts here?

There are a few people now running them. But with drifting you are not getting the through put of air needed to cool down an engine that is running at full power.

Remember you\'ll need a 2 way differential.
TipS:
Add shims to make the diff lock earlier
A Diff also needs to be run in.... 1/2 hour of figure of 8\'s should do it...then an oil change.

You can increase steering lock by getting some special washers to extend the steering arms from the steering rack. Also make modifications to bring your steering arms flat (as opposed to at an angle) if you lower it - this will cure bump steer.

You\'ll want to make the car as light as possible too.

Make sure your turbo\'s not too big and laggy.

Big intercooler and radiator preferably in a V mount formation, is best.

You don\'t need to get rid of twins to drift an FD, only if you\'re going to very high level.

Finally, think of fitting a hydraulic handbrake, as FD handbrakes aren\'t very powerful at the best of times...!

Engine mods, etc. to do, but these are already mentioned above.

Hi Miguel,

Your FD is an awesome looking car :)

Well i still want to have the car for grip as well, so i kind of want the best of both worlds if that is possible?

I like the idea of this as the car is on coil overs, where about could i find these parts from?

I do like the idea of keep the twins, but would like more puff from them, What are knight sports uprated ones like?

Miguel how do you get on with the V mount?

Cheers

Hi Gav,

We haven\'t yet got around to putting up our MRC banner ad, but I think I can safely say (Without fear of retribution from the moderators :eek!!) that we operate a service of sourcing and supplying all parts available in Japan, at discount.

//www.neweraparts.com

So a search for parts for FD3S RX-7\'s. You may find some on there that you didn\'t know about, although we\'ve still got tons of parts to upload.... given time (Difficulty is in finding the damn time :) :))!!

If you fit a 2 way diff, this can still be used for grip driving, as it\'s what it was originally designed for (2 way diff means there is limited slip both when accelerating and off the throttle, one way is acceleration only, 1.5 is, etc, etc).

I\'d never use my RX-7 for drifting, as it really has been set up to grip - so it\'s like fighting the car to slide, when it doesn\'t want to. Basically, the suspension settings, etc. are finely tuned for the two different types of driving, so you can\'t really make a car that is the best for both worlds...

So I\'m building a race engined AE86 Corolla drift car - purely for learning to be sideways as much as possible, down to a fine art... Should be ready mid September... well, the engine and mechanicals that is... Cosmetics are yet to be decided.

As an example - I drove a friend\'s standard engined AE86 last weekend and was amazed at how easy the car was to slide.. My AE86 is currently rock solid on corners  in comparisonand a pain to make it go sideways... because it\'s been set up for grip driving, by the previous owner...It probably grips as much as the RX-7, which is a lot of grip for a Hachi Rokku!

So settings are of paramount importance.

Thanks for the compliments on my RX-7 :) Always appreciated that the car gets so much recognition, despite being in Japan!

....We\'re building a (barely) road legal race RX-7 in the UK which should be unveiled shortly, as a project in J-Tuner magazine...but if not, when the full respray\'s finished, we\'ll start putting the word out it\'s about to surface :burnout

Thanks for that info miguel.

Yeah it was seeing your car in jap performance that made me want to get my FD which i will have in a months time :D

How do you get on with your v mount, as when i saw it you still have twins on there, not your on a single.

Well i am just going to slowly build my rex and see how i get on with it for both grip and drift.

I have driven a couple of Hachis and they are easy to slide around, very good cars indeed, got any pics of the hachi, big fan of them :)

So whats this naughty rex your having built, is that being done in the uk or Japan?

Cheers

Hi Gav,

Nice to know my car was the inspiration behind you getting your\'s.

I think I posted some pics of the AE86 some time ago.. I think a feature / story will appear about it in J-Tuner shortly...

Right now it\'s having a new engine built for it from an AE92 engine (Stronger block, etc), TRD engine components, etc, etc, to make a real 200 bhp from the 4AGE N/A engine.

Once it\'s done I\'ll post some pics.

The V mount setup is one of the best mods that can be added to an FD, but not a DIY job, as it\'s complicated to re-plumb the A/C, etc. Takes a lot of work.

We have an FD in stock just uploaded today - it has the V-mount setup. It\'s described here: http://www.neweraimports.com/carDetails.jsp?carId=139

WGT and MW Bodyshop are preparing the other RX-7 at the moment...

Which Rex did you buy in the end?

Miguel

Well i always wanted one, not just because they look soo good but i just find the engine so interesting as well.

I have a soft spot for N/A Toyotas, have a BEAMS MR2 with about  220 bhp :)  So your using the 20v head then? are you running throttle bodies on that? I llook forward to seeing it, i will have to pick up J tuner.

I have pretty much set my mind on getting a v mount, i have never liked the idea of having a big thick core IC restricting the airflow to the Rad, i plan to install it when the engine comes out. Just looked at the pics, looks very impressive.  the v mount is alot bigger than i thought, are the rad hoses always that exposed at the bottom?

In the end i got an FD Type R, here is the link for you http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15907

Dave, hows things mate, here Si came to look at your FD. Yeah i just noticed it was being built in the uk lol

Hi mate,

yeah he has gone for a R32 GTS-t or looking at a pimp import anyway, was looking at one with a SR20DET conversion.

32\'s have become real popular by the looks of things.

I still love your rex, just a shame i couldnt quite afford it :(
