Title: Egi for drifting?
Post by: R32 Nik on June 21, 2005, 07:59:45 PM
Hi guys, Sarah is now looking at doing some sideways stuff and I was just wondering if her EGI would be any good for drifting and if so what would it need, apart from the obvious suspension and a shed load of tyres :D.
Do EGI\'s have an LDS? I could look it up but thought I\'d ask while I was here.

If not does anyone know of a TII with a sound engine for sale, not bothered about what the bodywork is like as long as it doesnt need a sh*t load of welding doing.

I am getting earache for not checking this out before and she is saying she is going to use the GTS-T for drifting if I don\'t get a rex sorted soon :(

Any help would be appreciated

Nik

TRex has a red egi and im 99% sure that they dont have lsd\'s. i watched him spinning one wheel up the strip at north wield. i would say the egi would make a good drifter with the right diff but you should see the loverly red t2 in the for sale section. they dont have lsd\'s either it turns out. just in the usa. so youll still need a diff.

I have seen the LOVELY red TII lol. We are just trying to sell the GTS-T first to fund it. Would be a bit nervous about drifting that tho as it\'s so nice. Oh the dilemma lol

Ignor the fool Nik....

AFAIK EGi\'s DO INDEED HAVE LSD\'s....

I have 2 and they BOTH have LSD\'s!  :burnout

Done many Drift session myself and one session was with one of the EGi\'s, totally stock/standard(like T2rew\'s) and in the Dry it drifted like a Muther...  :wiggle

So yes she can have fun drifting an EGi........... A T2 may be better as it will certainly be less stressfull on the engine.

 Hope this helps.....

sort of on topic.

whats the weight distribution on the egi and the turbo 2? is it anywhere near 50/50?

last year someone had an egi at a cone dodgers drift day in andover. it didnt come with an lsd but he welded up the diff and it seemed to drift well even in the dry.

MAzda claim the car is actually 50-50...

From my experience this may be true as I find the arse end quite tame and takes some effort to lose... You need to purposely push it to get the rear out!

The EGi (stock form) is very difficult to get out unless in high RPM (power) and you push it.....

The Turbo on the other hand is a little easier once in the power band....
And I refer to a Stock T2 here too....

I had a MKIV Supra Twin Turbo and a non Turbo modded and both were extremly lethal in both wet and dry... They bite easily.....
But saying this, I had more confidence in the Supra\'s than the Second gen RX7\'s.....  I used to enjoy getting the Supra\'s out of shape because although they would go without asking, you always felt in control...........

I have seen a guy drifting a First gen RX7 and it was well drifting proper and controlable.... believe it was standard as well...

I ain\'t no drift king, but can hold my own with the skills including drifting a couple 4 wheel drive wrx Impreza\'s in both wet and dry conditions.....   :burnout

Yup, I agree with TREX, I had a well modded EGI, but unless you put knackered old tyres on the back end then you really have to try hard to get the back end out.   Having said that, I still found it pretty easy to catch again, even if it was an unitentional bit of oversteer! :)

the fb rx7 you have seen drifting. it wasnt at north weald was it? a sort of light blue colour?
this was a friend of mine\'s car and it was standard.. lots and lots of rust tho.
it was quite well balanced but had an open diff so needed to be chucked around a bit to keep its sideways.

50/50 weight.
hmm now i really do think i want a turbo 2 drift car   :chat

what turbo does the t2 have? and what flange does it use? (e.g. t2, t4)

how much work is involved in upping the boost on an rotary? what other parts do you need to upgrade to make sure your not going to blow it up??
(sorry i am tottaly new to rotary engines) my final power aim would be about 300hp. shouldnt need any more than that.
i want to do the mods properly and not cut any corners, as i know this will spell death for the rx.

is it like the smog around stortford. the smog you created when you speak out of your ass. or maybe ONE WHEEL spinning egi smog. i have a genuine collection of real t2 with real fd engine not a miss match of bits and pieces like you. it works just fine thank you very much. potential 11 sec car :guinness

Spot on fellar.... Thats the one.
If you were there I was the dude busting the tyres off the Impreza...

Those were cracking drift sessions there, shame they stopped it.

Oie Jay, seems you can\'t answer me  m8....  :p

 Where\'s your car?

Back in the shops again.... AND STILL SLOW! ;)

Anyway I\'m coming outside to talk to you as the wife is now telling me... "Honey That man is outside our house again begging for you to open the garage as if wants to see your car again and take more pictures of it!"

\'note to self\' --- remember to tell T2rew to move his camping tent and gear off the front lawn and from in front of the garage.

yeh it was a shame they stopped it but the surface was really hard on the tyres and that gutter of death kept ripping them off the rims..
i was there with the driver of the black mr2 (sideways rob) and the fb was one of his drift cars.

the council came down on andy (the lotus guy that ran the days) and made him put loads of rules etc in place and that ruined it. then he just gave up trying to please them and stopped running the days.

Yeah dude, Andy is a Top bloke....

Very very impressed with his driving skills, he jumped in the Impreza(my car) and showed me how to do it round the track with 4 wheel drive....  :god  he just jumped in and totally had it sideways proper all over the run.
Did the same in many cars, even my cousins Rx7 egi and had that all over the shop proper too in his first drive of it!
 Very good instructor, Andy........

Also know what you mean about the destruction of tyres there as I had to limp home at 35 mph on the motorway as my tyres were shreads at one of the sessions early last year....

yeh andy is a top driver. winner of at least 4 official racing championships you know  :yes

and the lesson you learnt from driving home on shot wheels was...... yep, bring spare tyres  :chat
in the early days i\'ve driven home on rear slicks, just praying all the way home that i dont get stopped by the plod.

what drift days do you attend now? been to any of the conedodgers days?

QuoteThose WERE the spares that got sh*gged too....  :chat

Haven\'t done drifting much since the North Weald action as that was nice and close to home....  :cheers

I understand there is a new committee set up to handle and give permission to the running of events there now.  So hopefully this would change and loosen up so we start back the sessions..
They have also now started back drag racing there this year so hopefully the drifting also gets the nod...
