Post by: deanflowers on June 21, 2005, 07:01:47 PM
if you purchased a set of twin turbos for £175 in good condition would this be reasonable, what would be the implications on fitted them?

Apparently they have been given the all clear by a specialist

I understand it is a common problem but the cracking through the two ports alarms me

This was my thoughts so as soon as they arrived i told the seller i wasn\'t entirely satisfied but would wait till my turbos were off in a few weeks time before deciding whether to return them.

I was again assurred that a specialist had said they were OK.

When mine were taken off they were also badly cracked and so asked for a refund with no reply,

I have now manged to buy a second hand manifold section after getting bored of waiting for £50 and asked for this to be refunded but was told that there is nothing wrong with the one i have got as the specialsit has said so and that if they were in top condition they would of been £350.

a few sets have sold recently for a fair bit less than i paid which is slightly annoying

Sorry bud, but those are quite bad dude...

They all crack alot, but it is the extent to the cracks that is the problem.

The worst one is the one thats breached the wastegate... Thats when it\'s bad as it will leak big style under high temps....

I had the same probs as you, more cracking all over but not yet breached the wastegate....     I had mine proffessionaly welded as a temporary measure till I sort out a replacement... well a Big Single..  :chat

I would advise NOT to put those on.......

Don\'t buy from e-bay if you could avoid.  try and get a set from someone in here thats upgrading etc. as you may have more chance of redress..
Going rate is £150. for a decent set....   missed a good one with no cracks  for £100. few weeks back from someone on here!  :yes

Good Luck, hope you get your refund!

SCOOMER off here sold them me dont know what specialist.

I think ive been more than fair asking for £50 to compensate me for the manifold but not sure on the condition of the rest now, maybe a full refund would be better

 As I said...  ;)

Sorry dude I am no \'big\' expert but I will not put those on my car for the reasons I mentioned previous.. Or even pay for them..  Common sense really.
 They are NO Good........

And now I want to know who this \'Specialist\' is................. :yes

That is the manifold and not the turbo. Now I know it doesnt look good for the turbo set, considering the manifold, but the turbo unit could still be a1, as turbos can run very very hot with no such issues due to more r&d using a generic tried and tested design. Now I\'m not leaning to any side on this but am just giving another view. When you bought the turbos did you initially buy just the turbos and the manifold simply came with it or did you specifically buy the manifold and turbos as a set?

Anyway good luck with sorting it and to be honest a refund of £50 would be nice as an act of good will seeing as you\'re both members.

Paul:)

Time to name and shame?

I wouldn\'t count a set of tubos with that level of cracking as \'good condition\' even if they work now.  It\'s blatant mis-description and, even under private sale, the seller is bound to describe as they are.

Thats the point tho as Paul said - the turbos (presumably!) dont have any cracks!

IF the guy was specifically selling the turbos, not the turbo \'pack\' i.e. manifold too - then in all likeliness they ARE in good nick as originally described; the fact the manifold is a bit ****ed is immaterial if the sale was for the turbos... If u ask for a set of good TURBOs, I dont think u should be moaning that they came attached to a ****ed exhaust manifold. If you asked for a complete turbo pack then thats different....

As Paul said thats the manifold, what are the actual turbos like?

I would think that for the price you payed and the description that you would expect a manifold to be in good condition.

Second hand standard turbo packs sell around £100-£200.

Cheers

i will probably fit the set i have with the manifold i bought if this isn\'t resolved by the time i need to fit them back on the car after the rebuild. But if i have any problems i willing be taking them up Scoomer.

I have been offered a couple of sets but at the moment i am trying to sort out the last bit of cash for the rebuild kit so all my money is tied up.  thanks for the offer though

I would think that due to this situation, for clarification, you should be allowed access to your old pm\'s.

Ask whoever a mod, Clive, Glenn etc if they can help you.

Many thanks will post a cheque for membership once i get paid on friday.

according to the Pms \'entitled turbo pack\'

i paid

 Â£175 + the delivery  (£23.03p for delivery).

and was told

\'The turbo pack is off my 95 fd and was in good condition when removed!\'
before buying

and when i recieved them i sent

\'ive recieved the turbos but there is a problem there is cracking around the flange and between the two chambers see thread

http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/foru...&threadid=14264

this is the sort of problem with them. I will remove my turbos in the next week or so but if mine are cracked in the same place i may want to return them.\'

the reply was

\'Hi, i spoke to my tuner who removed the and was told that the cracking is common and was asured that they fine to put back on.\'

last month i sent a pm saying i wished to return them as mine were cracked but did not have any reply.

i reminded him of the pm on the weekend and said that £50 would be fine as that would cover the cost of the replacement manifold.

i recieved this reply

\'I recieved your PM while i was on holiday and by the time i got back i forgot all about it, the turbo\'s i sold you i had checked by a specialist prior to putting them up for sale and he gave them the OK! I took into the account that they were slightly cracked with the price, thats why they werent £350 and only £170. So im sorry, i wont be refunding £50 to yourself.\'

i have asked what specialist but not recieved any answers and he has been online reading this forum on more than one occassion

It seems your a bit gutted over the price you paid for them?

My advert says "OFFERS" and you OFFERED £200 + postage.

I spoke to my tuner and reduced the price to £175 + postage and you agreed.

I even posted a thread showing the CRACKS, Remember? probably not Eh?

http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11594

I refused to give you back your £50 as i was told that these turbos were ok to go back on. If they were or are junk why was mine producing 12PSI with no probs? Now im no expert but who am i to believe? A specialist or someone i dont know from adam?

I was considering giving you £25 back for the manifold as i had already reduced it from £200 to £175 = your £50 Back.

Dont think posting which specialist told me their ok is going to help, do you?

Oh and john f, the first pic is not what i sold him. Thats a seperate/different bit of the manifold! The turbo bolts to that and the manifold bolts to the rotor housing.

Scott

that post is dated December 2004 i bought them in April sorry but i wasn\'t looking for turbo packs back then not surprised you still had them.

i wouldn\'t of minded paying £200 for them if they were fine,

I will accept the £25 back as you knocked £25 off please send my cheque to MRC as my membership.

I will not be doing buisness with you again and hope i have no further problems once fitted.

Hi Dean,

I was the one who removed the Turbo pack from this car and returned them, I was asked "is the Turbo Pack serviceable" my answer was yes they have a small amount of wear in the Turbo\'s but are perfectly serviceable for a good few miles yet !

As Rich says, the part you are showing is NOT the turbo pack so l really cant see what the problem is because had you brought this pack from me you would have paid the same price and would not have even got the manifold which is the part your complaining about, because l would have thought you would have used your manifold anyway.

To keep this in prospective good quality service exchange Turbo\'s will cost around £2200 and Mazda units £5000

If you brought just a serviceable manifold from this Guy l could see the problem but if you just brought a set of Turbo\'s, i.e. "Turbo Pack", then l cant, sorry.

Rather than all this on the site you could have contacted me direct and l would have willingly explained what you were looking at and l am still puzzled why you contacted MRC for my details when my mail address is under my signature and there is a phone number under my ShyAuto, 01474 361800

Although l do now hope this clears up any missunderstangs that have occured here.

this is the first i have heard of you having anything to do with them as scoomer did not share that with me.  I tried to contact you regarding opening my PMs up

as John suggested:

\'I would think that due to this situation, for clarification, you should be allowed access to your old pm\'s.

your name was first on the list and i could not PM you or email you to ask.

didnt notice the other two email addresses on you sig my appologies just clicked on the send an email to the user button and it said i couldn\'t, i probably wouldn\'t of used your works one for something not related to your work anyways

I was under the impression that because the turbo pack is shown in the picture with the manifold that would be what i was purchasing, He had plenty of opportuinity to say about the cracks when i asked on the condition of the turbo pack.

The cracks should of been explained in the advert and i should of sent them straight back. lesson learned.

Sorry to get involved.
And please correct me if I am wrong here.

Firstly... the advert the chap bought the item from DOES NOT SHOW damage, hence why he probably offered to purchase!
We are talking about the advert placed in April not LAST YEAR!

Secondly... Everyones speaking about manifold and Turbo pack etc...
from what I can see or remember it is ONE unit of the Turbo.
And it looks like it is the turbo assembly unit that is cracked up, NOT the Manifold.....
Look at the first and second photos in the \'ADVERT\' (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13871&page=1&pp=15) , the first one shows the \'Turbo pack assy\' , the second shows \'the manifold\'.... Am I correct?

If I am then it is the \'Turbo Pack that is cracked not the Manifold\'...

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong!   :o

I do aggree about the PM bit in this case, although this will not be a problem in time as people won\'t be able to PM each other unless they are members.

Its a real shame that you did not just send the parts back if you were not happy as this was a dispute between two individuals and not a company against an indivdual , ( dirty washing in public and all that)

I will add that you are going to be very very hard pushed to find any Turbo\'s for cheap S/H money with no cracks in them but you then have to make the call as to if they are still useable and from what l saw they will still see service, remembering the cracks you are seeing probably happend years ago.

I once saw it written that an FD could probably melt a small icelandic island with all the heat from the twin turbo so resulting cracks have never supprised me

BTW my ShyAuto company sells only new parts due to the complications of S/H stuff as is being seen on this thread!.

hopefully i can them sort out , i am only glad iam fitting the engine back in myself and not paying someone else to, the cost of these then going wrong straight away and having to repay someone would be a kick in the balls.

i think 4 sets have come up in the last 6 weeks for cheap money some have actually said no cracks.

if scoomer had shared with me who took them off i would have contacted you clive as you have reputable company and i accept that you feel they are servicable.  But when the information wasn\'t coming forward and the person was blatently avoiding the question this lead me to doubt.

My luck with RXs seems at constant low after buying with with a suppossidly brand new engine and finding out that in fact its shagged (compression being 4.5)

Post by: deanflowers on June 22, 2005, 06:12:50 PM
here is a better picture of what part is cracked exactly, after reading back through it seems there is some confusion, probably down to me calling it the turbo maniflold, this is the cracked area, from the sound of it i have not been calling it by the right name.

so by buying a turbo manifold i have bought the part that this bolts on to which is around 2-3 inches deep correct????? if so this isnt a great loss as mine is starting to crack anyways.

I think Trex understands what is broken

so what is the way forward from here.

a) Fit them and see what happens

b) Have them repaired and then fit them (who is going to pay?)

c) Buy another set and try to get the money back

d) Use them as an expensive paper weight or ornament.

Maybe i should create a poll as to whether they are bolloxed or not?

As Clive said, cracking is non just usual, it\'s common place - it\'s the extent to the cracking that you need to decide how bad it is. And from the most recent picture you have posted, they really don\'t look that bad. After all, you\'ve just bought a set of \'second hand\' items. You shouldn\'t expect something in fantastic condition - true, you feel you\'ve been mislead - but as far as i see it, it\'s down to the confusion over the comminucation thats the problem - not actually the standard of the product bought.

The turbo pack looks useable to me (But i am no expert! :p). I think someone suggested, or has had it done, having the cracks welded. That will be only temporary though, due to the heat created by these turbos. (They do sit in the exhaust after all!)

I say, chuck \'em on, and give it a go! See how you go with them on. I reckon you\'ll be pleasently surprised!
Title: Fair Price
Post by: dre on June 23, 2005, 11:54:27 AM
I wouldn\'t buy a second hand turbo pack with that extent of cracking. True they are useable but for how long?? and how much boost would you be able to safely run?? It\'s not exactly a small job changing turbo packs so you would want them to last a year or two before changing them again even if they are so called "cheap" second hand parts!!

My turbo pack that i have taken off has no cracks in it and my turbos were running 0.9 bar of boost!!
