RIGHT. AT LAST IM GOING TO START THE PROJECT.
i toyed with the idea of buying a compleate car from japan but as the dealer didnt get back to me it has spured me on to start what i have been meaning to do for a while. my name , t2rew, is for the reason i have both a t2 and a rew engine from an fd.
i also have a to4e waiting in the wings. i just spent a small fortune today at wgt and with the help of some of the vendors on here i will get together the other bits needed to compleat this car.
i will take photos as i go and put them up here so you all can see what stage im at. first ones will be on saturday.
You may have picked the wrong engine for a Fc?
I would have gone with the Re from the Cosmo, they have masive runners std (Bigger than the REW) and use very simalar engine mounts to the Fc stockers so fitting is very easy.
I supose its all about parts available, if you have a Fd engine knocking about then there is still advantages (Better oil system and hardened Stationary gears std)
Chris
Sounds like a bit of a project going on!
Anyone know what happened to the yellow FC with the
AUS. (I think ) body kit on ,had the top half only i( think) of an
fd motor and twins on it .Very nice car was running 15(s) at pod a year or two ago? Was still being set up though?
I remember \'Tim\' had it for a while and the guy was London area?
Maybe some one here?
Good luck Paul..
really does sound likw a great poject, should keep you ocupied
i chose this engine because its what i can get. parts are also easy to get. i hope to have all the power i need with this set up so i belive ill be happy when its done:cool
i am still in the prosess of making a carbon fibre rear shelf so ill get that out the way then ill tackle the engine mounts first. so here is a picture.
What sort of Hp are you going for?
Chris
i NEED 400 rwhp
I think you might need a bigger petrol tank than that little thing... :D
Dan
Of a T04E? What you going to do P/P it?
you may see 400bhp but at the wheels is pushing it, What internal mods are you doing? Ceramics etc?
Chris
Glad to see someone taking on a project, keep the regular updates :)
My advice:- \' ceramics \' dont waste your money, spend your money on getting it mapped by someone whos KNOWS what their doing.
To4E 400rwh? I dont think so, I have a T04S if you want with 4 inch inlet etc, obviously fits same manifold.
I will swap that Fd lump for a 13bre with good compression if you want, it would be a better engine for your application, and the inlet tract is much better.
Do you know many 400rwhp Rx7\'ns?
And more to the point do you know of any that have done it without Ceramics?
There are people out there but not in the UK
I myself am building a monster engine for my car but i\'d rather spend the money and have it 100% right before trying to get big hp out of it, Simply becouse if i dont it will end up a very Expencive pile of Bits.
I sugest if you are after big Numbers look at the cars that are running in the UK at your sort of level and what sort of Relibility mods they have done. Forget the US and Aus becouse they have the Back up and this sort of HP is common.
Chris
Thats fine you spend your money on ceramics. I personally believe we have loads of engines going pop due to mapping and general set-up issues.
Cars go pop with or without ceramics, id rather put the 2k towards another rebuild.
Fair enough! But i\'d rather build an engine that wont go Pop and need a rebuild?
What do they say Ceramics last three times as long, when you put it like that a grand for a set dont sound bad?
I have found if you spend the Money get very good Compresion, power often follows in large amounts, Bad rebuild and poor Comp then you\'ll struggle.
This is why i would always use New Housings with Ceramics on a high hp engine (Very good Comp) nothing less, for power you can\'t cut corners.
Chris
I agree new housings=good compression=good power.
There are many people out there with 400/500atws using Mazda seals.
Why did you go 20b anyway, what was the most you made out of a REW? With what turbo and port?
Hey carl, do ceramics last 3 times as long? what about phils engine? Where the tips ok? Did you re-use them?
LOL i belive thats in stock form.
I went 20b becouse one came up but i am building a Custom Rew Triple for Power.
I do agree though you can kill anything if its not set up correctly, but if you do it right in the first place when it is set up you will see better gains and so maybe use less boost to see the Power you want?
The thing about Ceramics people wont use them becouse of the Price and the fact there is No one like Pac\'s in the UK that can keep a big hp car in one peice. If i was building a "Road" car i would aim for 400bhp max becouse that is all i can garantee would last for any lenth of time whilst still being driven hard (plus the little fuel problem).
Chris
wow........
talk about take over my prodect thread..
first off fish... the tank is small as you pointed out but youll also see that my spaceframe trolly chassis is very light. as i wouldnt be dragging alot of exess weight i hoped the mpg would b ok....
your right i have based my 400 bhp on what i have read on usa and oz sites. one of the turbo shops advatised the hks to4e to be capable of 400rwhp and alot of the cars over there are 400 bhp. i am also very aware that its not just a load of parts bolted together that make bhp its the way there set up.
for this i have to rely compleatly on who says the best rolling road place is for this engine. right now im nowere near being able to set up the engine as its not even in the same gararge as the car:D
im with evil rota, im useing 2mm seals and if i have to ill put in new housings. ill stick with the fd lump as it will be all the sweeter doing fd\'s on trackdays useing there own power plant :rollin
now GET OFF MY LAND:wave
It sounds like your on a Buget, so Steel Apex\'s will be the way to go but your be carefull you dont fall into the trap of the wanting Big hp for no money, you will find it will cost alot more in the long run, Take it from me i have a garage full of bits from my past Projects.
Chris
the first thing i had to do was push this from one gararge to another. they were in different estates:reallymad
OH DEAR
looks like i had rats living in here, nice nest
,im glad i dont have to put ALL this back,, do i?
they say the trick to cheap performance is weight reduction.
i took off the power steering pump , abs pump and bracket and some other stuff off the inner wing ie coils and charcoal filters.quite a good reduction
much better . now i can get to the mounts easier
can you get 400bhp uot the 13bt? or is it too risky
its going to make this thread very long with all these lame photos but hey, i do it coz i can :D
hi rich
you can but i think there is an issue with the strength of the statonary gears or end plates. worth a try though;)
this is the start of my new mounts. 10mm plate with some holes init
dont now what all the fuss is about. any one could do it:cool
cheers:cool justa bridge port and toughened gears, so it\'ll rev to 15000:cool :cool and i\'ll be happy
todays update. i havent spent that long on it today as i went to work today. i picked the engine up, yes by hand, there great little things arnt they and put it in the hole were it should go. its now bolted to the box with my fabricated bits of 10mm plate with 6mm spacers to clear the sump bolts. you can also so the 100mm dics bolted to the t2 rubber mounts.
the pics are left side, right side, and a look at the engine in the hole.
im hoping to join the two part together tomorrow but im going to a wedding tonight so mabe not:D
right
looks like it was made to go there.
the rew mounts are at the back of the engine but the t2\'s are more in the center. im sure there is a very good reason for this but i think the t2 way is much better.
but then what do i know:)
Don\'t look like your going to have much room for the twin turbo set in there!!!!!
Seriously keep the pics coming , your doing well.
All the best Clive
clive@mazdarotaryclub.com
//www.mazdarotaryclub.com
im very impressed, you seem to be steaming along. It should be one bad boy when its readyy:evillaugh
its looking great, i\'ve got my fingers crossed for no probs
made the mounts yesterday. they look so bad i didnt take a photo. i think i will use these to make a jig then get them made properly by someone that knows what there doing:D
i am going to get the box out and re-built but as im full of motavation and the weather is good it seemed like the best time for my wife to rope me into somethings for the rest of today great.
i had the turbo on with the waste gate and the monster down pipe wouldnt fit. ill have to do this when i get the engine and box back. this might be a pain to do as there is only so much stuff you can fit in the space .
If you\'ve got turbo\'s going on that, tell me you have aircon... I\'ve seen a few FD\'s without aircon, and I reckon they must be NUTS!! The cabin get very hot, as does the engine... If you\'ve got it DON\'T DISCONNECT IT!!
a/c = tooooooo much weight
as im wrighting i may as well just tell all that i got my lightweight steel flywheel and h/d clutch today:D
glad to hear its going well. it should be awsome when its finished, do you have an estimated finish time?
it will , with out doubt, be ready in the future. the last project i done was suposed to take 2 weeks mabe three,
it took two and a1/4 years.
:D
Whats happened to the oringal engine (is it for sale). Looks like youre gunna have one hell of a motor. Nice to see another FC3 project, this time with the best of both worlds.
im keeping the old one to go into the other one when that goes bang. it will also let me have a go at a rebiuld if my finances recover from this.
to update the box is now being done and ill do the brake lines on the week end.
Cheers, look forward to seeing the car when its done. Mark.
i havent been on here because i have been waiting for just about everything you can think of to arrive. its costing a fortunr and i nearly sold all the bits i have because i was doubting my sanity.
i have some more bits now so will post pics at the weekend
lets get the photos up
that was the rebuilt box. all new bearings no problems inside £250
thats the rear cross drilled disc, one of a set
there is a lot of money there. that is my nice large port engine . a very nice job done by carl hayward.
an expensive clutch and flywheel and you can see the wastegate.
thats were it lives now
that was just being craned in
nice big to4e
this is where its all happening. my other g2 is looking sweet and to think that was up for £2000
i am still waiting for bits to come but i am quite happy with the stage im at. there is alot of money there and i was wondering if it would all be worth it. so much so i was just going to give up and buy a tuned ferenza (cant spell ). i was getting anoyed with the fact that id order something and it wouldnt come so i did something else that needed doing and that couldnt be done and so on. then i was at a stage were everything was taken off the car and i couldnt move in the garage
now it is going back together but im running out of buget. i need an ecu, a dumpvalve an intercooler, plumming for the oil and water, and an exhaust. i hope it to be done by march
i have allowed a for certain amout of sag when making the engine mounts and i thought i haddent alowed enough but it semms that i have allowed for too much. the engine is sitting too high and it is causeing a problem getting the down pipe in. i may make new mounts or maybe move the floor pan out the way. that is a problem for another day.:reallymad
hahaha,,, when i fitted the box onto the engine i noticed that the release bearing was wrong so i fitted my old one. today i phoned the supplyer so that i would have the correct one on the shelf, just in case..
turns out that the clutch is wrong too so out it all comes hahaha... i love cars, there such a relaxing hobby:reallymad :reallymad  :reallymad :reallymad
You only get one lap of lifes short circuit and with this car it will be a good one. one day, I think T11\'s are a test sent from above.
hi. as i hadnt been on for a while i thought id give a bit of an update.
its not really a million miles away for the end. i had to take the engine off the box to change the clutch so i re made the mounts. this has given me some room to get the 75mm dp in and im glad i did it. i had some new oil lines made and i fitted them too.
i will order some silicon hose to make up the cooling system and fit my electric water pump within the next few weeks, its not an important job yet as i need to sort out the wiring loom first. this is my weak subject and its possable that ill need the fire dept ready when i turn the key for the first time:rolleyes:
the loom that i have doesnt feed the coils so i will be looking into the prob next week with ross\'s help. its getting on for five months now and im waiting for bits i ordered. its really anouying me because the prodject has enough things to worry about without having a lack of parts.
if all goes well (if they turn up) i should be getting an apexi pfc a nd controller and a boost controler this week.
so its loom
fueling
bushes
water hose and pump
fmic
job done
iwont tell you what i did to the hks cast manifold but im getting one made up now ;)
till next time
jay
nice to read about your proceedings!
keep us up to date m8.....
REgards
Iwan
i bought a compleat loom off dragon and i got my pfc ,boost controler and fuel rail off pip today.
this weekend i will be up to my eyelids in wires.
i am waiting for the manifold, this is a shame as i think i would have been able to try to start it this weekend.
wow sounds like the engine is very near completion. so you must be exited then, im exited for you
yeah i am.
iwas like a kid at christmas yesterday when all the lovely new presants arrived
bit worried as well as the wiring is the bit that goes up in smoke if done incorrectly
i dont have a camera to show you what im doing anymore so think of scrapheap challange :rollin :)

7. so as you can see progress is slow but it is coming together. belive it or not i am still waiting for something. and i was hoping to get it running over christmas but i wont be able too. the box of loom is going to be the fun bit. i have a weeping brake pipe join so will have to redo that. i am mounting the electric water pump at the moment so i will know what pipes i need to get some water in it. the observant will have seen the 1600cc secs and fuel rail .i am finding it hard to get time to put this up, but now i have a camera that you can see the pictures ill keep taking them and put a load up in one go.
merry xmas every one of the 1009 people that have veiwed this thread. am i a record holder:D
Nearly their now and it looks like all those skinned knuckles will have paid off. Look forward to seeing it in the flesh.:cool
ive been hacking the loom about and have put it on the engine. there is so much that i dont need but i want to see if it works first before i take any out. that way i know if it doesnt run that it something that i need to put back
the manifold that im waiting for is not really any nearer being done so i still have to wait before i can run it up. infact i have done every thing else so untill it arives im stuck. the water hoses are on so thats another job out the way..this is only a piece of the loom. the rest is twice this size

So what manifold are you waiting on mate?
well:o
i got the hks kit from japan and it came with a cast manifold. as its for a fd engine it puts all the dp and wastegate abit too close to the bulkhead for my liking. bla bla bla spoke to somone bla bla thought it would be ok bla bla so cut the wastgate flange off:eek:
turns out it would have been ok anyway bla bla but cant wield it and feel it would be safe. before anyone offers to wield it dont bother. i will be doing some long trips (nurburing) and will not build in a weak link. im having one made but its being done in thier spare time so its already taken about 7 weeks.:reallymad
i nearly just went out to buy one but as they have put in quite some time on it already i thought i should wait for them. ihave seen what has been done so far and it looks like it will be quite good so here i am in limbo.

pictures speak a thousand words. yep im having a great time. the tube will be my cheap three inch exhaust. i\'ll retain the twin exit as it looks much better and will have the benifit of two box\'s so should be ok for any track but still flow very well.
bloomin \'eck look at all those wires ! think i\'ll stick to carbs
after three weeks in the garage doing the wiring, it started tonight. that is after 100 miles on the starter moter countless de-floods and then a two mile tow. hehehe happy bunny. :D
Very nice, what turbo is it you are running and what spec.I searched through the pages and couldn\'t find it,im probably blind though.:)
just standard stuff
to4e, walpro, 1600sec\'s, ported carl hayward engine, , electric water pump, skyline GTR intercooler, Apexi power fc , exeddy clutch, secondary thottle removed, greddy pofec b, big valve head and high lift cams.
there was big plans for the rest of the car but thats going to have to wait now.
R u roadworthy yet?

big valve head and high lift cams.
I also put some forged pistons in the engine and used total seal piston rings. The rods are titanium, and the cambelt was renewed.
It was quite hard but I managed to get a couple of extra pistons in the motor so it is now an 8 cylinder.I decided that the best way to lower the compression was to use more than one head gasket,I always use 4 of them on big power engines,it works a treat. The 5 valves per cylinder were tricky being as they are big ones,I found that if you weld them together that works and use a drill to open up the ports for them until they all join each other.
I\'m just reciprocating!
Kind regards
Carl
just to let you know im still alive and the car is nearly ready to run in. juggling fatherhood and morgage payments it all takes a bit longer. no new photos yet but i wanted to bring up this old thread up to the top.
Hi,
Is she going to be ready dor Rotorstock next year?
John
88 GT-R
i should hope so. it drives now but there is some things that need sorting..
i suppose your looking for a bit more competition than you got this year?haha
dont worry, ill be taking the fastest fc trothy this time.:D

Hi,
She is looking good, what turbo are you running? Looks like a T04 series. Are you running the Apexi FC? Well good luck, and i look forward to next year.
John

the car has been arunner for a few months now but i have been having a nightmare getting the running temp down. the last thing i have done is do away with the electric pump and put the stock one in. with no stat and the fans on full blast it sat there at 79c this is the best i had seen so took it out but the temp just started going up. turn it off for a minuit with the fans still on then start it and the now cool rad water goes in and the temp went down again. i have decided that the t2 rad isnt man enough and ordered a new ally one. im convinced this is all that is left to do and i can then start running the engine in. if not ill start filling it with wood and petrol:reallymad
in but not going to be able to try it till sat.
.
been messing about with the car. the new rad worked very well without the fans on (maxamum flow through). i fitted the fan cowl but the temp rose faster and came down slower so i had to drill holes in it. i also re-fitted the ewp and removed the thermostat.
i was asked if it was all worth it and to be honest i would have said , not really. untill today that is.
i have done a load of miles and have been increasing the revs. im only running 5 psi boost and tonight, still with only 62% of availlable revs, i think im going to like this.
it was trying to tie itself in knots. the rear tried to violently over take the front. it really shows the chassis up and has infact got me worried about how much more money im going to have to spend to sort the thing out.
i\'ve got a new diff to go in, and new mazdaspeed bushes for the rear (on the front already) but im definatly going to have to get a set of teins all round.
its not even mapped yet :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin
ahhh money well spent
no more posts in this thread as i think its safe to say the rew-into-t2 is done. still loads to sort out and will let you know how its going. if the car holds together long enough for rs2 (or i dont kill it ) you can see it there.
bye y\'all
This was why I gave up too quickly with my FC - a \'bit\' of power and it became VERY apparent how much cash would be involved in getting the rest of the car capable enough to cope, more than I was willing to spend on an FC unfortunately :(
Well done Jason, its been a very interesting project to follow. I think a few more posts after tuning should do the trick. Then u can leave it until after RS? :D
thanks . just a couple of stupid things to sort out but im hoping for it to get mapped in a matter of weeks.
then its just a full tube chassis and some 325 tyres to finish :rollin :rollin
looking back at some of the wiring piccies I\'m sure you must be very happy to have it running and on the road :)

yeah. the wireing was tricky. i had to get a mate to do it as it was well beond my capability. that is one of the bits id like to redo.its still a bit of a mess. id like to trim it a bit more as there are wires going places that dont need to.
was going out today to finish off the running in but my wife and kids are all exploding in the bathroom so i need to stay in :reallymad
was checking over things yesterday and found the brake pipes leaking in a couple of places so i spose i should do that:eek:
its like my first car. the brake master was shot but i just kept bleading it back up. trouble was it went from a weekly job to a daily job. they say some things never change:rollin
and the story didnt end there!
Did you fabricate the carbon parcel shelf yourself?
my brother made it. i think he would make it in black firberglass for you but he said carbon was a night mare
Hi J just thought i would catch up with your thread, had to get off early on Sunday as i we had planned to have family round for a BBQ, had a good weekend though is Dave still at Peterborough asleep!!
