hi peeps,
I am in the process of making myself buy some gauges for the 3rd gen, they will be boost, oil temp and oil pressure. I know the ones I want, not the most expensive but they match the stock ones perfectly.
what I need to know is how difficult it is to install the two oil gauges... not the fitting of the gauge but the wiring and the sender unit...
the ones am looking at are from http://www.furneauxriddall.com.. they are electrical and come with all the bits and pieces you need... also the wiring into the lights for illumination...
are there any rx7 specific instruction for fitting of these or will the instructions with the gauges suffice... anyone in the cheltenham area fancy lending me a hand some time?.... unless it is that easy and can do it when I service my car some time... ( all my weekend are booked now till 16th july )
though the evenings are light arent they... hmmm
just incase any body wonders I am gonna get a 3 pod single din fitting and have them below the stereo
wish me luck...
for the two oil guages the easist way to fit them is with a sandwich plate that fits inbetween the oil filter and its housing, it comes with pre drilled holes to take the various sender units.
Greddy do one, or you can get one from Demon Tweeks (bit pricey) or do what i did and get one off the USA Ebay, just log on and do a search.
The boost guage is the easist, just run the supplied tube to the intake manifold and on the back side of it just above all the turbos you will see a pair of nipples, one will be in use the other capped off, just pull the cap off and connect into there.
cant I just replace the existing sender units with the ones I get and wire them up from there....
had a quick look for those sender units and cant find anything...
anyone know where to get one?...
all help gratefully received
another option is to fit a t-piece and then screw your senders into that

On the Demon tweeks site which thread size is suitable for the FD?

hmmm dont know
on the gauge I was lookiong to but it said...
supplied with 1/8" NPTF sender.
12V Electrical (90°) 52mm Ø"
now the question is, is this the right part for me to plug the two sender units into?...
or do I need a different kind of sandwich plate?...
it looks as though the two sender units will screw into the side of the plate and then the filter will screw on to the top of it...
anyone know if this is so?
HI
I have a sandwich plate and I know the sender units I have fit.
You need ot make sure the sennder unit you have is the same size as the sandwich plate thread.
Mine was 1/8" NPTF, its not fitted yet so I will check the size and let you know.
And yes the sandwich plate fits on then the oil filter fits on top of it.
I will be able to check once I get to my garage later tonight, I iwll take a poic
eddie,
would be cool if you could...
where did you get your plate from?... was it a D/tweeks one or sourced elsewhere?...
also is the thread for the oil filter on top a standard fitting for a standard FD so all I need to do is unscrew the filter screw the plate in and then screw the filter back onto the plate and then the two senders into the side of the plate... if it is that easy I will have to have a beer and celebrate?...
anyone?....
one other thing.... the gauges I am getting dont come with any wire, as they are electrical.... what type of wire do I need, and can this be sourced from Maplin.. and is that easy to install.. I assume you need two wires... one giving power form the man circuit and one from the sender to the back of the gauge...?
hope the weather holds out long enough for me to do this....
as allways advice gratefully received
The sandwich plate comes with a threaded brass bolt, you put the plate on, screw the bolt in to where the oil filter would have screwed and this holds the blate on, the other end has a thread for your oil filter to screw onto.
You will need to find out what thread is used for a mazda RX7 oil filter, best just to ask when you buy one as they should know.
Hi
I got my plate from the states, myslef a jet got one each, they came with a second thread whch was the size for the FD, I will check to see if it has any size info on, but as Nixrx7 mentioned the company you buy it form should know and supply the correct one.
I do think it is that easy, it seems so, thats all I plan to do:)
On the wire side of things not sure but usuall need a posistive and negative and a wire for the sender, this is how my electronic gauges are set up.
Cheers
thats what i thought... the supplier should know what one for each car...
but I called demon tweeks and I said I got their number from this forum and went into detail about what I wanted and I asked the question, which size do i need for a 93 ex and they said ... well thats what you should be telling us?... not very helpfull really
on the link to D/T above they ahve various ones 13/16"...3/4" M18 m20 thread... anybody know which one I should get....
how long did it take to get one fmro the states?... 2 weeks?... more?
would prefer to get one form this country if poss... anybody got one and know what size they are?...
cheers...
