Title: removing air pump....
Post by: scientist1968 on June 19, 2005, 04:40:40 PM
I\'m getting rid of the emmisions stuff, air pump is first to go. Do any of you guys know a ribbed belt the right length to drive the remaining components........i\'m guessing someone has used an OEM belt from another car that fitted?

You need a Pulley kit mate, using a belt alone wont get the job done.

yeh...i thought i would get this answer,

i don\'t see why i can\'t replace the belt with a 4 or 5 ribbed 30-31 inch belt for just the remaining components ?
i don\'t necessarily want an underive/overdrive pulley or one made out of billet aluminium, guess i\'ll look around the local motor factors.

From memory is because there will be very little contact with the water pump pulley....the pulley kit increases this contact considerably...

hmm, maybe having an under-driven pully would slow the water pump down, thus reducing the flow. until you get to high revs?

Pumps air  :p

It pumps air into the cat, i think its to circulate the gasses stopping it from blocking up but im not to sure. I know that if it isnt working your cat will block up, and if you remove your cat you dont need the airpump....  :)

Ahh i see, geez there is some crazy stuff that goes into the FD engineering...so basically rule of thumb dump the air pump if decated? Does it free up power ?

Decatting will free up power. removing the airpump will free up a very small amount as it one less mechanical thing the engine doesnt need to drive.. its also a little less weight for the car to pull, every little helps, geez i sound like a tesco advert...  :D

lol it did a bit! well i dont plan to go mad on mods at the moment but decatting it one of them and i am big fan of losing weight...not myself of course lol.

of which i was going to ask, is there just one cat on the rex or two?

Cheers

On the j-spec and UK spec cars there\'s only one. The US spec cars have got a pre-cat in the downpipe, which makes underbonnet temps about ten times worse. Environ-mentalists have got a lot to answer for.

UK models have a pre-cat in the front downpipe,
is this class\'d as a proper cat?

For my rex and all others i think its hard to change the front downpipe cat because its right next to the stearing colum which mean it had to be stepted on to make it fit lol.. so the flow is very restricted here, losses u alot of power so im told.. but im sure theres a kind man somewhere whos overcome this prob lol
