Title: brand new engine or rebuilt ?
Post by: The Wizard on June 14, 2005, 03:05:21 PM
Been speaking with a few people and below are the figures....

here are the choices:

1. brand new mazda built jdm engine (factory built in 2002) - includes sump, filter, pumps etc (its not just the bare engine)... £3300 delivered & taxed
2. rebuilt engine by highly recommended UK specialists - £3200 min
3. rebuilt engine from USA (by RX7.com) - £2000 (2mm apex rebuilt) or £2500 (3mm apex rebuilt w/ street port & basemap for pfc), would need the engine sent there, rebuilt and sent back - these prices include return air freight!

other factors to consider
- 02 Factory built jdm engine would require the ecu from 99-02 model (+£???), & labour to install (+£500)
- UK specialist rebuilt would come with 12m/12-24k warranty etc
- RX7.com rebuilt engine could come with warranty (limited due to international order & as they won\'t be carrying out the install & tune), but it would be fully tested on their plug and play setup & supplied with comp results. basically it will be tested thoroughly before dispatch. Labour to install (+£500)

Which one would go for if you just wanted to get a replacement engine producing stock power w/ stock setup? or perhaps 300 max if aftermarket ecu is present?

any chance this can be made into a poll plz ?

I\'d just take it to rxmotors and get it rebuilt.

I would say go for a rebuild in britain, you have a warranty...and a mild port wouldnt go a miss...

I\'d go for rebuilt engine. If you remove it yourself, and re-install it yourself, you\'d save money there. About £500 I believe is the figure quoted for that job.

I don\'t understand why a brand new JDM engine would require a 16bit ecu. It\'s just an engine - perhaps someone else can shed some light on this?

A rebuild in Britain, definately.  Other than the USA basic rebuild and fitting at £2.5K, it seems you are looking at spending a minimum of £3K whatever your avenue, so I would certainly get the engine rebuilt by a trusted UK specialist, relatively close to where you live (some perform a rebuild for less than £3K), who you can return the engine to if there are any niggling problems (which obviously can come to light during the running in period), and get it serviced at to aid the longetivity and warranty of the engine.

Just my thoughts.

I\'d go for a brand new engine from Mazda in Japan. Newera Parts can source and supply a brand new factory built engine for your car, delivered - at approx. £3,200.

Mazda must know how to build engined right first time, by now :)

I\'d go for the rebuild in the uk. Ok may cost a little bit more, but you get a better chance of good customer service from a local expert than somebody on the other side of the world. Plus you can choose any porting or additional work you want.

Just wish who did mine could have paid for a street port on my engine  :p
