Title: Lucky Escape
Post by: nikp on June 14, 2005, 01:57:54 PM
I have just jacked the front of my FD up in preperation for removing the gearbox to replace my clutch. I removed the wheels at the same time so i can kill two birds with one stone and get them refurbished. So without it\'s wheels on i decide to have a poke about both the front wheel arches and have noticed that the front wheels have rubbed holes into both wheel arch liners (Including my brand new one only replaced a few days ago! grrrr...).

Anyway, I noticed that the front left has also started to rub through the wiring loom on the other side of the wheel arch liner!!!! Fortunately, from having a quick look, it so far looks like it\'s only rubbed the wrapping off the loom, and all the cables are still intacked! phew! I shall now be aqble to sort that problem out before i start getting odd electrical problems!

Might be worth people checking their wheel arch liners for similar things!

Whereabouts do you put the axle stands? I think the workshop manual says to put them under the sills where the supplied scissor jack goes, but that seems too likely to cause damage.

I\'ve always thought running wiring looms in the inner wings is a silly idea. I saw an evo 6 stage rally car that had an osf tyre delaminate the other year and it ripped the wiring loom and oil cooler out of the car ! ... he was looking puzzled as to why it wouldn\'t run as my mate was walking down from the next marshal point carrying most of the front wiring loom !

Very silly design !

Yeah, not the best of designs, as i\'ve found out!!

I put the axle stands under the lower wish bone as close to the rear mounting point - my thinking is that those mounting points have to carry the weight of the car, and therefore putting the axle stand there is the perfect place - i also decided that i did not want to put an axle stand under the sill for the same reason!

Do a search for the jacking points, we discussed this a bit back.  I think Donato posted a picture of the best places IIRC (dont jack where manual says to!!).

My wheel arch liners had worn through to the loom when i got the car.  I fabricated an aluminium plate and riveted it over the hole to stop it doing it again!  has been fine ever since (touch wood)

Cheers

Nice idea about the ally plate - i just used gaffer tape. Might try that idea - sounds good, and will look a bit more neat!

That\'s an interesting point - didn\'t think of there myself - I put my axle stands at the point of the blue circle. Just as valid a point in my opinion.

Just make sure it on the flat bit at the right hand side of the circle as that piece has a curve, you dont want it sliding...but it should be fine. Just make sure you keep your head out from underneath when you are putting the axle stand in place...  :cheers

Cheers for the advice - I\'m confident it\'s well placed, and it\'s in the position you\'ve described as i noted it bends round like that. I just have to jack the back up now, which i shall do very very carefully, as i don\'t want it slipping off the stands at the front!
