Title: Dead engine. What next?
Post by: Denny on June 11, 2005, 04:01:38 PM
So I enjoyed my ownership of an RX-7 for just two weeks and less than a thousand miles before it died.  I spent six hours sat at the side of the M25 yesterday before finally getting home on a flatbed.

Diagnosis: overheating, caused by pressure entering the cooling system causing it not to circulate and/or water leaving the cooling system.  In other words, it needs a rebuild.

Leaving aside for the moment how monumentally ****ed off I am about the guy who sold it to me (advertised on these forums, a non-member though), who must have known damn well it was on its last legs, my question is this: what do I do next?

I\'ve got a couple of rough quotes for getting it rebuilt - my nearest people are Rotechniks and Hayward, both of whom are saying between three and four grand for the standard rebuild (3500 and 3250 respectively, plus any unexpected extra costs I imagine, and I forgot to ask if that included VAT).  Then I can add on as little or as much as I like if I want to start doing some performance boosting work on it while I\'m paying out anyway.

That option will leave me having paid about 12 grand for the car in total, and also will leave me with no transport for the next month or so.

Some friends of mine seem to think they\'ve seen low-mileage and/or rebuilt rotary engines for sale for (a lot) less than this, even with fitting factored in.  Is this worth investigating, or are they talking out of their arses?

Do I have any other options?  I am considering just selling it to someone for whatever I can get, and buying something else instead with whatever money I can salvage from this mess...  I\'m not exactly over the moon with the world of rotary motoring just now.

Anyway, all advice gratefully received.
("If I was you, I wouldn\'t start from here")

Cheers...
A very depressed Denny

Well, it\'s not any fault of the club that the guy was a tosser.  He was selling an RX-7, which is what that bit of the forums is for...  can\'t expect MRC to inspect each car that\'s advertised there!  :)

Got your PM, replied, and got your reply - will give you a call this evening, thanks.

...sorry to here about your woes bud. That sucks big style.

I don\'t think that is completely fair about the non-members issue!I certainly dont think we should be tarred with the same brush!!!I use the forum for what it is for, picking the brains of folk who know there stuff, asking a variety of questions before I purchased my Fd.Would purchasing from a fully paid member ensured that the engine wouldn\'t die???i don\'t think so.

I am looking into getting a full membership , but find that you can only use paypal, and i refuse to get paypal as i\'d go completely daft and purchase a stack of new toys!!I have asked my brother about his paypal and we\'ll hopefully be a full member shortly.

Apologises for thread-jacking. I\'d stick with the FD if you can, the joys you will get once its running again will surpass anything you\'ve experienced!

Yeah... I doubt a member would sell such a dodgy car on here, but the fact that someone isn\'t a member certainly doesn\'t mean that the car they are selling is dodgy.  If that makes sense  :)

Although the expense of a rebuild is fairly horrendous, the bit I\'m most upset about is losing my transport for a month.  I\'ve only just got back on the road after being without transport for two years due to a motorbike accident, so it\'s really meant a lot to me to have my mobility back these last couple of weeks...  losing it again this soon is really depressing.

..I know what you mean, apologise for the quick fire response. I can\'t imagine how your feeling. I worried for the 1st couple of months that i had bought a dodgy one, especially with the flickery boost gauge.....and that scared the life out of me!

Hope things work out for you.

Yeah, I was just thinking about that...  the only problem is that this rebuild is already going to cost me more money than I\'ve got, so any extra expense has to be considered quite carefully at this point  :-\\

Still might be the best option though...  spending the whole of June/July stuck in south London feeling miserable really doesn\'t appeal to me either.

Sorry to hear your bad news mate. I went though exacatly the same situation last year. Bought my car as a private sale early in january and after only 600 or so miles the engine went bye bye\'s. Like you, i was totally gutted! I couldnt afford to have to work done staight away (had only just got the car!!), so it was off the road for over 6 months while i worked my arse off to get the money together. I took it to Rotechniks to get the work done and they were great but it did cost me slightly over 4k in the end with all the extra bits that i needed. They aren\'t the cheapest out there but the work they did was great and so far i\'ve had no worried.

Hope you can get it sorted mate and dont have to sell it as it is now. I was thinking of doing that myself, but a year down the line now i\'m so glad i didnt.

Good luck
Adam

rebuild it yourself! that way you save cash and get to know the car more..there are up&downs about this but im sure there are more up`s than paying someone £3.5K  you could prob do it yourself for £2k

money is precious..well to me anyway.

Nah.  I am The Anti-mechanic.  If I so much as go near it with a spanner, it\'ll never move again.  :)

its a real shame and i do know what its like as mine blew after 3000 miles. i also blamed the last owner but i think in realaty how could you know if it was going to blow? a freand of mine had a 126 merc, old s type. he did it up and sold it and it blew up the next day  . he was as surprised as the new owner. put it down as caricter biulding and be happy in the knowlage that when you get it fixed you can relax with many more miles to come :cool

know exactly how you feel, it isn\'t that difficult taking the engine out yourself that way you could save some money, buyt the vids off rotary aviation before dismissing it.

iam in the middle of doing mine after a very similar experince and ended up buying a peugeot for £100 the good news is that someone just offered £500 for it so a few more of these could pay for my engine rebuild:D

All i can say is come back is a wounderfull thing, If you do this your self and it doesn\'t run right your F**ked and 9 times out of ten end up taking it to a Seven man anyway.

Then there is the "Missed somthing on a rebuild" and on a Water seal falure is easly missed if your not an Engineer with all the measuring gear (Overheating is worse than Apex faliure!!)

And Don\'t Flame me for this but i am a big beliver in getting someone that knows what there doing to look at a car for me before taking the Plunge. I know its a Nice looking car and peoples head goes all swerly but its alot of money!! and like any deal where cash changes hands i like to know what i\'m getting. Even if its a AA or RAC report, dodgy as they are there is some come back on them. A bad water seal would have been ovious and one of the things they would have checked (exhaust gasses in water).

All i\'m trying to say is there is a moral behind things like this, if you don\'t know what your looking at or dazzled by the Lights get a pro to look at it. Just becouse you bough a Bad car with out knowing a bit about them don\'t pass the Buck. Its Not a NON MEMBER thing.

Uh, thanks, but we already had this conversation once in this thread, and we know it\'s not a \'non member\' thing.  Also, I\'ve said that I should have been more suspicious when buying.

The fact that I didn\'t spot I was being sold a lemon doesn\'t make the person who sold it any less of an arsehole though...  it just makes me a sucker too.

All the good points you make have already been made, and the bad ones too I think.  Thanks for your contribution anyway.

lets not kick the guy when hes down he is only venting his anger as we all wld if we buy a car and then have a 3 grand bill i think the main point is the guy selling had only posted what 5 times and prob only came on here to flog it and has no interest in the rotary scene which is very good for helping each other..the guy selling def knew it was a lemon hence the unable to start and warming the car are first.i note he hasnt come on here to defend himself in any way so i think dennys point about non member is fairly valid..i am not a member as yet but am fairly active on the forums

Fair enough hes down on his luck but don\'t it get on your nerves when people don\'t read up and do the Ovious stuff before buying one then blame every thing and every one.

Its how the RX7 got a bad name.

I\'m not blaming \'everything and everyone\', I\'m blaming the guy who sold it in a faulty condition.  Will you stop posting in this thread if you don\'t have anything helpful to add to it please?

Hi Denny,

Real sorry to hear this :(

One of the main reasons this club and forum exists was because there really was no way of people finding out info on these cars before MRC and hopefully we have saved many from a similar fate.

Sadly l understand from James that the car was a problem from the off!!!!

With these cars they should start n stop first time every time if there\'s a problem, leave them alone and l say this not to rub it in to you but to hopfully deter people in the future who may be reading this post.

As Jason says stuff does just happen but hopefully we can at least to minimise people buying bad cars.

I hope that this has not put you off of these cars to much because even at 12K you will find it hard to buy an equivalent car that will give you so much driving entertainment for the money.
