Was planning to do the welding on the TII today. Got it up on its side and started to do the prep work. Sadly the metal is thin and I\'ve now discovered a lot of structural rust too, so the job is now beyond what I can do in my workshop, and I\'ve just been quoted £1500 for the welding at mates rates.
So to recap, I\'ve just sold a gem of an EGI at a give away price of £1500, brought this POS for £1000.
Think I may have come to the end of line as far as Rx7s go.
:(
?????
£1500 That seems a bit steep, I know somone that had a new floor put in a MGB for a lot less than that.
I think you need to be ringing round, unless its a flintstone job i think that may be a bit OTT
that does seem OTT !
how much has gone ? if you can weld why not DIY it ?
speak to the master matey ( lol )
you will have to tell us more than that
what are you classing as structural ???????
although i could do with a cheap second rex ( you know im only kidding )
if you didnt live so bloody far away i would have offered my services ( after JUST spending 6hrs help Mulv take off his single turbo )
come on brett - you cant give up
Stu
1500 quid   . even if i had to make a floor to weld in it couldnt cost that. get another quote. i could probably sort something out. and i think what grinder said should be the club mot o.
DONT GIVE UP
Ok, i though you ment get it Cheap!!
LOL
Trust me, I\'m a pretty fine welder (got certificates and everything...) but without a proper hoist (I\'m currently having to work by lifting one side of the car with a tractor. The rust has taken hold behind the plastic bodykit, inside of the rear sill on the drivers side, all along the floor edges (both sides) even gone through the thicker sections running along the floor, the main front cross member in front of the rad has gone etc. If I was to persevere myself I\'d end up with a floor made entirely of weld and not a lot else. I will be getting a few more quotes, but even if I do all the prep I cant see the cost dropping much below £750.
And I still need to get hold of a new exhaust system, brakes, compression test the engine etc etc.....
I need time or money and have precious little of either atm.
maybe put that on ebay and come and buy mine :D :D
OUCH - now that sounds a lot of work matey !
if i was you - i would get the engine compression tested first - if its a strong engine - then weld the car up - or get another TII ( i got one for £400 with a dead engine )
this could be the easy way out to be honest - failnig that brett im not sure what i would do
any chance of some pics so we can all see what you are on about ?
i did all my welding for about £36 :)
Well, after sleeping on the problem the current plan is to trailer it around to a few of the local repair places and get some quotes for the work, see if I can get it down to a sensible level. If I ant then I will probably sell the car as a going concern and ebay my spare engines and the rest of the 2nd gen stuff. Then save up and import an Uber 2nd gen from the land of the rising sun....
Oh no what a nightmare :( - I\'m so sorry to hear this news :(
You won\'t give up on RX7\'s though - I know you won\'t! ;)
I\'m sure though like everyone else has said, you\'ll find someone to help for less than you have already been quoted, especially if you prep it and are prepared to leave it with them to work on as and when.
Can\'t you split the work - let them do the really structural bits and then you tackle the rest? That\'ll bring the cost down even more..........
I\'ve decided I have to cough up and get some one else to do it on a jig, I\'ll get them to remove the bodykit and weld up the panels as well as the floor and the chassis bits and bobs. At least then all the rust should be at bay for the forseeable future...
brett did you take any pics of the underside??
I just wanted to have a look so i can judge the level of mission im going to have to do on my t2.
the whole inner sill on the drivers side is dead, and the whole passnger side outter sill needs replacing on mine, is that more or less what you have on your t2?
I cant believe these cars rust so hard!?
Mine doesnt sound as bad on the sills, most of mine is on the floor pan and cross members (plus that annoying bastard of a front cross member...)
I didnt have my camera with me to take pics. If I remember I\'ll take pics when the guy comes around to do the quoting.
brett looks like im in the same boat as you, i bet if i took some pics of my t2 you would feel better about yours!
BTW is it just me or is there a shortage of mobile welders! i cant find ANY in the yellow pages!!
dum di dum - did someone ask for a mobile welder ?? LOL !
looks like stu is in line for some cheap T2\'s - yipppeee !! ( sorry chaps )
Mr Nuttah - have a look at my welding thread ( dis-heatened ) - sounds like yours is the EXACT same as mine - only 20 plates to weld on ( took me a good few weeks - just a few hrs at the weekend and every monday and friday off work for 4 weeks !! )
it can be done on the cheap even my a novice ( yup - i have NEVER welded before in my whole life - and managed to get mine thru an mot - at a cost of about £36 !! )
Keep this thread alive brett - we wont to know how it goes
and we still have the 100mph challenge on - and at this rate i may win by default !!
Take Care Chaps
Stu
Trust me grinder, I will hand your arse to you, even if I have to put a ball bearing through you UIM... :rollin
Grinder, my rusty problem is very similar to how yours was!!!
although i do have a little more experience than you,,, at school i made a metal clothes peg rack! looks like there is hope for me after all then!!
my friends call me Nas. :wave
