I started taking off my old knackered diff last night , almost got the whole thing off just got the 4 bolts on top of it to undo .... how the hell do you get to them or do you just undo the bracket that they\'re attatched to ????
I\'ll take some pics when its off , I did a proper job , the casing is in about 5 or 6 different pieces , removed one bolt and 2 pieces fell off
hopefully I\'ll have my new one fitted in time for the jap day at pod on the 19th , then I can blow that one :bandit
You will find that with the powerplant frame removed ( the girder that connects the diff to the gear box) that the diff drops down enough at the front to get a spanner over the top to undo the four bolts.
You will find the bolts very tight so put a short 17mm spanner on and tap undone with a club hammer to get them started as this will save a lot of grunting.
BTW please be carefull as they are heavier than you will think.
hope this helps
I\'m just chuckling to myself about who\'s posted to this thread so far... had to be you two. :D
Hi Paul,
Unless you have done it recently its probably a good idea to change your fuel filter while you are there mate, easy access with the diff out...
cheers
Donato

I can vouch for this after being knocked on the head by a supersonic spanner that was launched by having the diff land on it ! best to stick a trolley jack under it first
I guess the same goes for dropping the gearbox out! :p
I\'m going to be doing that in the next couple of months to do the clutch! Ooohhh....

Cheeky swine :rollin :rollin :rollin
Hi Donato , Yeah was planning to change it , makes sense , other possability is to relocate it to the engine bay
Hi Clive , I should have given you a lift changing yours then I\'d know how to do it :cool , I didn\'t know the powerplant frame came out , I\'ll go and have a look now , just in case I can\'t suss it out how do I get it out ??
by the way on the subject of relocating the fuel filter link to it here (http://robrobinette.com/fuel_filter_move.htm) what do you guys think ?? do you think its a good idea or not worth it ???
I would have thought that if you\'re replacing the fuel filter to a different smaller type like they have in that article, then surely it\'s just as easy to relocate that filter to somewhere more appropriate under the car, more easily accessible than the stock filter?
Therefore, it\'s not located in a hot engine bay, but it is located in an easier to get to location.
Well I got the bugger off , ended up taking off the top bracket as I couldn\'t get the 4 bolts undone , also couldn\'t remove the cat so I only loosened the powerplant frame but it all worked
I\'ll post some pics once i\'ve resized them , its not as bad inside as I thought it would be , crown wheel looks fine , but the whole unit has bust apart , the casing is in 2 completely seperate peices ( and its omly a few blots that are holding them together
is it ment to look like this ??
where does this bit go ???
ooppps
I think we can safetly say its a bit broken

in the scrap bin
proper job mate, well done!
lol thats rock and roll
hijac - breaking a car = how do i drop the back subframe aredy removed the all the bolts i can see whares the rest of em?
might just cut the floor out with me new plasma cutter :d
Hello - me and my girlfriend have just twigged - were you at rotorstock and didn\'t get off the startign line!? We saw a silver FD that didn\'t get very far and wondered what the problem was!
The silver rx7 that didn\'t get off the line was indeed the very car this thread is about :(
Ouch state of that diff, Looks sim, ilar to some of mine well done:D
Anybody anymore thoughts about relocating the fuel filter ? going to pick the diff up off pip tomorrow ,
I\'m probably going to get a filter from him as well and just leave it as it is unless anyone has an opinion
well you wont be needing to change the fuel filter very often?
i wouldnt bother moving it myself, i think you have enough of a mission already looking at the state of that diff! :rollin
Nice job mate, you certainly dont do things by halves! Well except your diff which you certainly halved! :rollin
Why dont you speak to pip or someone about relocating the filter, im sure he will be able to tell you straight away what to do and what you need.
Cheers
Donato
P.s, not being cheeky mate but remember to inflate your tyres before you test the new one...

Spoke to Pip today when he told me the diff had arrived , he suggests leaving it where it is so as not to have any problems with vapour lock , I\'ll probably need to change the diff again before the filter needs changing next anyway :rollin :rollin :rollin
Don\'t worry I aint gonna forget about the tires :cool
Right got the diff now , looks in quite good nick
Fuel filter done , hopefully get the diff on tomorrow , Pip reckons a diff brace would be a worthwhile investment as he thinks it would probably stop it happening again , any thoughts ???
He was also well impressed at the pics of the old diff , even took my phone to show the other lads :cool
Diff brace seems to work for me, also gearbox and engine. :wave
a few quickies about the CAT , had to take it off so I could get the powerplant frame down ( made it a hell of alot easier to get the new diff in place on my own )
I\'m planning on putting a decat pipe on when pip gets some more in stock and I want to know what do I do with the air pipe ( think thats what it is ) that comes out of the CAT ??? secondly how do I disconnect the heat sensor from the CAT , tried un bolting it but the nuts are rusted on and the whole thing starts to turn , don\'t want to snap it off so I stopped . There is some heat shrink sleeving around the end of the cable that comes to it , if I cut this off can I just unplug it ??? didn\'t want to try in case I can\'t
You may think why am I bothered about breaking it if I\'m ditching it anyway , I just don\'t want any warning lights or abnormal running while I wait for the decat , don\'t know when pips gonna have them in stock again as the guy who makes them has broke his bender
While I remember I found a great idea for relocating the fuel filter , just extend the pipes and mount it on the back of the rear sub frame , unfortunatley I only found out after I got the bloody diff back in place
One more thing , whats the easiest thing to use to fill the diff up ??? and don\'t say oil
Dunno about a lot of your question, but as to filling the diff up with oil, how about one of those old style hand held oil hand pump things!? If you know what i mean!?
Glad you got the new one on mate! will you be about this weekend? (JapShow)

Broken bender eh? where is bish when you need him!!
I assume you are going to connect everything back up whilst running with the cat???
The heat sensor can be cut and insulated with tape and shoved out the road somwhere, if you are not going to remove the airpump but are removing the cat, my guess would be dissconnecting the air pump electrically and blanking off the end of the air pipe. I cant remember exactly as i removed my airpump when rebuilding removed the pipe and blanked off the bit at the inlet...
Filling the diff, get a big hole cutter that an electrician would use, randomly drill holes in the floor till you find the diff and fill with oil! :rollin ;)
You can relocate the fuel filter the next time you break a diff... :eek
I\'ll remove the air pump when I get down and dirty with the engine , I\'ll just blank it off for now and unplug it and I\'ll cut off the heat sensor when I get the new decat
As for filling the diff I think i\'ll go with nikp\'s idea , although I have got plenty of holesaws if I get stuck :D
Kieron , things are going well so i may be down at pod on this weekend , probably won\'t be runnung on the strip though
Just gotta find somewhere that stocks decent quality oil , halfrauds didn\'t have a great selection , only had there own brand in 75/90 , any suggestions ???

Don\'t forget the turbo timer harness :chat I\'ll buy you a beer :cheers
Shes alive !!!!!!!!!!
Got her all back together today , blimey I didn\'t realise I took so much stuff off , finaly got a little hand pump to put the oil in , gotta find a better way it took for ever , then you can\'t get a bleeding socket and ratchet to fit between the subframe and the diff to tighten the plug up
Anyway took her for a spin and she runs sweet :cool
Hell of a job on your own but its done now and at least I\'ll know how to do it next time :rollin
Kieron , dosn\'t look good for tomorrow , the little uns not so well so the missis is moanig about me going down , hopefully I\'ll make it on sunday if not I\'ll post the harness down to ya
