Title: Fuel system question
Post by: dturpin on May 30, 2005, 03:33:01 PM
I am having a problem with my FD cutting out on me when I am driving.  I think it is something to do with the fuel system.
I have put a link on my diagnosis plug between gnd and f/p, which is suppose to make the fuel pump come on constantly when the ignition is on, but it doesn\'t seem to be doing that.
Can any one tell me if when the link is in, does the voltage to the fuel pump still run through the fuel pump relays, or does a voltage go straight to fuel pump missing out the relays?

I am also getting a phssst noise in the cab sometimes when I put my foot down in lag, and I also get a fuel smell when I boot it.

Under load, whilst cranking and when activating the pump through the diagnostics port it will run full batt. voltage. via pump relay
Under light throttle/cruising it will run via the resistor and low voltage.

If you put a link between gnd & f/p on the diagnostic thing (a paper clip works well) you should be able to hear the the pump whirring away at the back of the car (lift boot to hear it better).

Do this and see if you can smell anything under the plenum.  Pray that you cant:eek:

The fuel smell under load could be a number of things, like leaky secondary injectors...  Another thing to check is that you have a check valve between the plenum and the brake servo, as this causes a strong fuel smell under hard throttle.

The fuel pulsation damper has been known to fail and start leaking, sometimes with disasterous consequences! Like Jon says, check for any evidence of a fuel leak under the UIM towards the rear of the engine. It\'s a right pain in the plums to change, rat\'s nest has got to come off if I\'m not mistaken. There is some debate as to how useful the FPD is, the FC never had one and alot of FD owners have just eliminated it with seemingly no ill-efects. I personally wouldn\'t ditch it, you just have to keep an eye out for it leaking.

Exactly where-abouts is this FPD, as i noticed last night that i had a smell of fuel, and it started annoying me as i had only just got it fixed up at WGT! :reallymad

FPD is at end of fuel rail, on firewall / back side of engine, where UIM joins LIM.
