Title: PWR Charge Cooler
Post by: FD3UK on May 28, 2005, 12:38:01 PM
I have been making some parts to try and create a professional looking fit for charge cooler. I went this route as fitting a FMIC seems to create engine cooling problems, I did not want fit the charge cooler rad in front of radiator for the same reason.
I have mounted the charge cooler rad as shown with cold air feeding from same place as SMIC.
Still have some more work to do, but its starting to look good. Hoping to get car running again soon to see if it will work.

Yes all the parts were machined by me, including the pulley. I am making up some pulleys which will be available soon.

Is a charge cooler more effective than a V-Mount ?

Charge coolers are great so long as they are plumbed well, they have the advantage of not interupting air flow to the all important water rad. Both V mount and CC give good air inlet temps the advantage with the CC is you reduce the heat soak associated with air to air coolers because you have coolant circulating all the time the engine is running. I ran one quite successfully in the yellow one for 2+ years and gave very good results.

they are however less efficient at higher boos pressures

Higher boost pressures need more than an intercooler to be safe, you then add WI for those high boost moments:wiggle Having seen data logs of track cars running 1.2bar with CC and large front mounts I know which one I would be having. TBH there is not much between a V and CC apart from the stated lack of heat soak on a well plumbed CC

Thats why Abel used to run 2 on what was the fastest RX7 in the world and why the fastest 4wd in world uses an air/water cooler...really down to the system and its intended use. A well put together system is unlikey to cause efficinecy issues at the boost an FD will ever see.

V-mounts are maintenace free tho and probably the way to go - fit and forget and do the job..
