Hi all...
Most of you probably know that my rotary experience is mostly RX8... but a friend just bought an FD, and I wonder if anyone might comment on the following observations/questions...
The car is a 100% standard, unmodified UK FD.
1, How big is the tank... it was empty when we collected it, and after some frantic searching for a petrol station we got 70 litres in... Was it truely on fumes?
2, At said petrol station, it proved a little reluctant to re-start from warm... any idea where to look to solve this, it could have been embarasing. especially when an overalled mechanic wandered over and offered to "check the points"... D\'oh... "I took great glee in explaining the lack of points... or pistons, and just at that moment it started!"
3, Perhaps related to the above, it seemed to me to idle rather low... but otherwise ran very well and pulled strongly...
4, Again, perhaps related... the previous owner seemed convinced that it was fine on regular 95 RON fuel... and although my advice was to use super, there was none to be had... so is it OK on regular as an unmodified car... or should he get some octane booster/optimax?
5, Anything else to look for... or advice for an FD virgin...
dependant on ur location i wld get a specialist to check it over that is wgt for north/hayward rotary or re worx south/tim at rx motors dont know location but south i think/dragon in devon and never us unleaded except in dire emergency.even standard jap imports are supposed to run on 100 octane and have to be remapped for super
The fuel tank capacity is 76 litres, so it was pretty empty mate, the not liking the warm start is a little worrying and might be inclined to get it checked at least have a compression test done if havent already. The idle on mine has been set at 800 if thats any help, to adjust them isnt that hard im led to believe, as for the fuel it is perfectly alright to run uk FD\'s on naff british 95 Ron petrol as that is what they are set up to run on and it says in in the manual so it must be true. Hope that you get things sorted out, Regards Andy:wave
Won\'t start from warm ?
Was it compression tested ?
Unfortunately not... but it was driven a reasonable amount, and started from cold and warm without trouble, and no smoke worth speaking of... several times before the deal was struck... this only happened after it was collected.
I would describe the problem as more "a bit reluctant" rather than "won\'t start"... hopefully it\'s just the plugs being fouled a bit...
Thoughts?
Just a thought (but I would get it checked nevertheless) :
How long did you drive before filling up? Maybe it was only just beyond the \'would have flooded\'-period?
Just my 2p about the fuel, I have used mine for over a year and neally 5000 miles on Uk 95ron fuel with no problems. :)
Oh, we drove quite a way... searching for an open station... we were getting a little worried because everywhere was closed... living in london you assume that everywhere is open 24 hours.
I\'ve made a point of bringing the revs up a little when switching off in the RX8 to avoid the chance of flooding etc... and my friend forgot to do this without fail... LOL...
Also, he was driving very gingerly as this is his first time back on the road after a major bike accident.... I think the car could have done with a bit of a blast after not being run very much for a good while... but mabe that\'s just urban myth... my RX8 used to be a little reluctant to start when warm too... but it\'s got better and better on that front!....
