Title: Gearbox Options
Post by: Ricco_04 on May 21, 2005, 11:48:54 PM
Hi all,

Gearbox is a little clunky trying to engage 1 & especially 2nd.  Car has done a lot of miles so i\'m thinking its a little tired. Whats the best option.....

Re-condition the gearbox
Source one from a breakers
would a 5spd one from an RX-8 do the job??

Any guesse\'s at the cost for these?

Cheers, Ricco.

Hi, Not the Worlds  best expert on these things, but I just attempt to employ a bit of common here.

Breakers:  Problem with them is, Whats that one like ? how many miles has that done. has it been in a shunt and could be damaged.  Not agood idea!  I would go for a good recon job.

As far as the RX8 box goes, thats going to be expensive, but can\'t answer if it will fit or not, I would think not, as things like the shifter will probably be in the wrong place, toooooo much trouble.....

Well thats my view for what it\'s worth:rolleyes:

Cheers Normski,

Thought the same about the breakers! Was hoping that the RX-8 box was an easy swap!

The rx-8 box would break. It is very weak and fragile made for NA low torque engine. Not for rx7.

Do you have a standard shifter or quick shift, Quick shift can highlight  clunkiness.  When was the gearbox oil last changed?

Gearbox oil was changed when I had a full service (at Wolverhampton Mazda :reallymad ) in Jan and I had the Diff oil changed when I had a checkup at WGT at mid March.

Just to make it slightly more clear - when the car is stopped & in neutral, selecting 1st is pretty difficult and when selecting second you have to ease it in  :eek  !!  Its like it wait\'s to catch part of the gear (which cant be good) and then its goes in.  ;)

Ricco.

I\'m quite interested in this thread as I\'m suffering the same kind of symptoms.  It\'s not really bad, more annoying than anything else.  Had g/box oil changed around 5k ago which I don\'t think made much of a difference.  Anyone know how much it costs for a recon?

i think they all are when cold seems to get better when warm oil might help a bit but seems to be a common fault

I\'d be well interested in the box (been on the lookout for sometime), as mine is nearly dead now... :eek

Yeah, it does get easier to shift when it warms up but not by much.  So it sounds like a reasonably common thing then? Or is it that our cars are about 10 years old with a fair bit of mileage in them?

Anyone had theirs done before? (recon)  Just wondering about prices, recomendations (midlands) and general?? :)

Hope you don\'t mind Ricco, but I just gave Craig a call about the box as I\'m in dire need for one, I have all your symtoms plus the 5th sync has gone!

FD gearboxes are normally notchy when cold and ease up after the transmission fluid heats up. I heard that the 99 spec boxes are very smooth and would deffo like one for the car!

Thanks mate!

Clive at Shy can recondition your box, or you could ring Jimmys if you want a used one. Or if you have lots of money go for the 6 speed HKS one! Best to give all the vendors above a buzz to see what they can do for you.

Thats so true, you think you\'ve finally got everything done and sorted then you spy a book or website with tons of stuff you never knew you needed so much!

I think that the web is an awful thing as you can spend vast amounts of money in a few clicks!!

Good idea with the slaves tho! :rollin
