Title: Future gearbox problem ?
Post by: Mart160plus on May 18, 2005, 10:03:55 PM
Since buying my imported 94 R2, now with 31.5k on the clock, when the engine is cold and you shift into 2nd too quickly it catches a little. When the car warms up this problem ceases. Now, I\'ve just noticed it\'s catching a little going into 3rd too. At the moment this means slow upchanges when the car is cold, but is this a sign of a future gearbox failure ? Will the addition of molybdenum or changing the gearbox oil help ?

Advice would be welcomed as I\'ve not heard a great deal about the gearboxes on Rexs.

Generally fd boxes are notchy when cold, and are quite well built. Change oil just to be on safe side, its not something that gets done often enough.

Also, try and match the revs so the synchro doesnt work too hard. I suppose you (we) should try and do this all the time anyway.

Remember rotaries like changes a bit higher up than the average car even when doodling about town, and shifting slightly higher helps you shift smoothly.

It\'s a myth that shifting earlier is automatically more economical, there are other factors!

(However, I don\'t mean redline it in first in 30 zones...)
