Is the Apexi on the base map better than the 8bit ECU ? I\'ve not got the funds for mapping for about another month and wouldnt mind fitting it so I can have a play with the commander. Obviously if its gonna have a detrimental effect I might leave it in its box until my wallet is bulging enough for the mapping. Oh yeah the car is completley standard by the way.

I\'ve been using my PFC on base map for over a month now, no problems at all. With the commander its helped me solve a few sensor problems as well.
If the car is totally standard why are you fitting an Apexi? Are you planning to start modding your motor?
You can fit the Aexi right away with no problems (Please someone correct me if im wrong).
TBH, id wait till you have the funds to buy some performance parts and then fit the apexi and have it mapped.
Yeah the plan eventually is to fit further performance parts, exhaust, filter etc.
Correct me if I\'m wrong but I was going to fit it now coz I was under the impression that my 255 horses might be a lot closer to 280 horses after mapping, even as standard.
Also with a base map on an import running a PFC would also be safer.

I had a mapped Apexi whilst the rest of the car was stock. Little impact on power, actually made marginally less peak power but at lower peak boost (with a boost controller). The stock exhaust is too restrictive, adding down pipe and back box but keeping the cat has freed up c.45bhp.

Out of interest what downpipe and back box you running mate ?

Feed Down-pipe (from RE:Worx) and Racing Beat Twin (Rotechnics)

This thread is of interest to me since like you I\'ve bought th Apexi PFC (bought it before I took delivery of the car infact last November) but I too can not afford to get it mapped right now.
My car is nearly standard. I have a HKS boost controller, twin-HKS Superflow filters, a large back box and a blitz BOV.
So after reading this I *think* it would be safe for me to put the PFC on?
One question though... does the PFC come with the correct base map already loaded on to it, or do you have to program it in yourself?
Cheers
Jon
I\'m a complete novice but as I understand it with those mods already you\'d be better off installing the PFC sooner rather than later as it will be safer than a standard ECU.
Installation is easy and you just have to go through a period of it learning the car with it running for 10 minutes, then with the rear demistor and air con on.
With those mods though getting it properly mapped and setup will increase bhp/fuel economy etc.
Bulla
Bulla, are you saying that it would be better if I installed the PFC and configured it myself rather than use a base map?
Obviously getting it mapped properly would be the best option, but that\'s not really an option at the moment.

for an example.:
standard car on 51000 miles, Re amemiya intake, Kakimoto back box, Power Fc fitted and mapped at re-worx, now got 265 @ wheels which is about 300 ish at the engine, so the mapping gives a significant power increase. The car was tuned to run at 0.8 bar on both turbos as well so its nice and safe, no chance of detination.
The drivability and smoothness of the car is much improved as the re-map gave me a smooth power curve and torque.

Did you do a power run before the Apexi was fitted? Be interesting to post before/after graphs.
Kevin
I wouldnt try to map the ecu yourself unless you are 100% sure you know what you are doing! could end up killing the engine!
If you are brave enough, have a read through this (if you already hae it then ill shut up)
A\'PEXi Power FC Commander Instruction Manual (RX7 FD3S 13B) (http://www.spipowerexcel.com/pdfs/fc_commander_fd3s.pdf)

No mate sorry, the bit with letting the engine run for 10 mins etc must be done in order to install it. Once this is done you will have the base map. The ECU needs to take readings from your car in order for the base map to be setup.
Mapping/configuring it yourself is an entirely different ball game and should only be done by a pro with some extra equipment, laptop etc.
Bulla
right. I understand now. Cheers for the advice.

Well... I bit the bullet today, andit actually tastes quite nice :D
After 10-15 minutes of irratic idling the car stablised and now purs like a pussy cat. In terms of better performance the power curve is definitely smoother, much smoother in fact. I couldn\'t really open her up and the roads are slick at the moment - it\'s rained hard today.
Gotta start saving the pennies now. I really really want to get it mapped properly.
Cheers
