Done it many times ( I hate having dirty hands), no ill effects. I warm up the engine first, so that if water does get anywhere it shouldnt, hopefully it will evaporate quicker.

What if cold water gets onto the hot turbo/exhaust manifold, will this cause it to crack?

I can\'t see it. I would have thought that it would have just heated up the water and evaporated it pretty much on contact. I reckon you\'d need a very sustained supply of very cold water to even get anywhere near doing that. I still think it would probably just slowly bring the temp down though, rather thancracking it.

and as for steam cleaning, can\'t imagine it would do any harm, but I would just warm it all up a bit first.
