Title: rebuild prices
Post by: DFLROWLAND on May 14, 2005, 07:03:34 PM
while i realise that each individual rebuild will vary for various reasons who do you think offers the best value for money rebuilds. i\'ve seen £1000 price variations for what seems essentially the same work.

if we are talking about a standard rebuild with no unforseen extras involved which company is best?

I had no problems with Rotecnics. Bit more expensive i think, but top guys who knew there stuff. Engines then come with a 2 year/24k milage warrenty.

cheers boys some food for thought there.

as a follow up question:-

what warranties do the rebuiders mentioned offer on their work?

i dont mind paying rotecnics a little bit more than the others if their warranty is 2 years/24000 miles as opposed to someone offering a lesser warranty.

or will the warranties offered depend on what mods you have had done or what boost you are running etc?

From memory, Rotechnics basic rebuild is approx £3600 and includes the general higher-spec rebuild, however, this didnt include new rotor housings which were a good few hundred pounds more if you needed them (£600 odd if memory serves).  Carl Hayward, who is just outside Reading is approx £3300, comes with a 12 month warranty (cant remember how many miles, but prob 12K) and replaces all the gubbins with top quality items.  His team are all honest decent chaps who only charge for what needs doing and discuss the options with you first.  I really would recommend them.

Good luck!

One other thing!  Most rebuild specialists vary the warranty depending on the intended use of the engine.  If you want to take it tracking or dragging, the engine has to be prepped reliably to allow for this, which will inevitably cost more dollar!

Cheers

I was thinking about taking my Turbo2 to hurley for a check up as my car won\'t idle after i fitted a imported engine, why avoid them??

As when i bought my car it had 3,000 miles on a brand new engine i (i have the receipt) and it wasn\'t running very well with all sorts of pipe work hooked up wrong and the wrong thickness.

the hose from the brake servo to the pleneum was a piece of pipe ie no valve iniside it, this could of been there before but they still should of picked it up and replaced it, it had a couple of water leaks and 2 oil leaks. the thermostat was also faulty which i\'d of thought should have been replaced when doing the engine.
A phone call to them resulted in them saying that only replace parts they are told to replace, so even if something is knackered they don\'t replace it!!!!!!!

The bill for this outstanding work was close to £4000 only glad i didn\'t pay it.

Now

My car went down to Carl a couple of months back to sort out the boost problem and he found my compression to be 4.5 on front and back suggesting a poor rebuild, this will be confirmed in the next couple of days as the engine is almost out.

My turbo pack is also knackered due to an oil leak.

My favourite bit was the vacuum hose being blocked off with a household 13A fuse.

Next step is to gather up all the bits that prove its not brand new and take them to court as i can\'t return the car to them as i\'m overe the service time, i didn\'t trust their expertise enough to change the oil as the air filter looked like it had 30,000 miles on it when i bought the car not 3,000.

The car managed a grand total of 13,000 miles before it would not rev pass 3,000 rpm and refused to start almost continuosly

so my advice is

AVOID HURLEYS

(bet you wish you didn\'t ask now)

Roteknics.  Â£4,200.  Inc new housings.  Inc VAT??  2 year, 24.000 miles

RXmotors.  Â£2,500.  Inc new housings.  Inc VAT.  1 year, unlimited miles

Just to state that I have nothing to do with either of them.

However, £1,700 for an extra year warranty??

I am pretty sure that tim charges 2.5k INC vat.   From my experience, Tim, Geff and chris are all excellent work and value.  You will have to be patient with Tim as he is busy due to being excellent value for money.

As for a 2 year warranty,  stick a boost controller on your new rotecknics engine, wind it up,  when it goes bang i am sure they will not rebuild it for free.

A few years ago Pip at WGT built and fitted an engine for me.  It was a pretty stock TII.  2 months down the line the engine had a problem.  Pip rebuilt it again and charged me another 600 quid.  At the time this was nearly half the price of the rebuild again.  Pip said that i had given the engine a hard time,  although i had not done anything he had an issue with it still cost me.

If you have a standard car and want a standard rebuild,  then the extra warranty would be fine if you wern\'t paying for it,  but then again,  if its a stock engine and your not going to modify it,  Tim\'s rebuild will last just as long.  I have a feeling rotechnics warranty is only valid if they do all the work to your car but i may be wrong.

At the end of the day,  a lot people want to make there cars go faster which as a general rule will have an effect on the life of the engine, if mods are done badly, the engine will be more likely to fail and an engine builder is unlikely to rebuild it again for free if its not down to him, and why should he!

If you want to modify your car and you cant do any of the work yourself, then for peace of mind, use the same tuner for mods and engine and you wont have any problems with mods that have been done.

I have heard many bad stories about hurley, but had no experience with them.

The best way of all is to bite the bullet and build it yourself,  there is nothing more satisfying, especially when its fast at the end of it!!!

i could not agree with you more lad! there is nothing more satisfying than taking the plunge just like plenty of americans on the us site and doing it all yourself BUT i think there is a lot to take into consideration with tolerances especially and also the risk of it going pop a few hundred miles down the road..have you built your own motor?  believe me i have thought deeply about doing it myself, but i get turned off with the worrys of the engine going bang or missing something silly costing more money down the line.  I think you need to know all the gotcha`s and tricks before tackling it yourself.
