My mom phoned my dad from london yesterday saying that her T reg vw passat 1.8turbo had broken down. It gradually got slower and slower on the mototway and when in traffic it cut out completley. She called the greenflag and the mechanic said that she there was too much oil in the engine. She admitted to adding oil before the journey, but only a cup full. having got it back to dudley my dad suggested taking it straight to volkwagon stourbridge as she needs the car asap. They said that a lot of damage has been done (camshafts sheared or something like that) they estimated a £3k to £4k cost!
I have just found out off my dad that the car is down the vw garage being stripped for inspection and i told my mom to get it out of there asap as the vw dealer will charge a fortune for stripping the engine.
i just think its weird that the engine can be wrecked with a bit too much oil. can anyone shed some light on this?
does anyone know where i can get a second hand engine and how much will it cost to get the turbo checked for damage.
thanks guys, any info would be really welcome.
:wave
depends how much more than full it was ? too much oil will lead to increased crank case pressure and damged oil seals etc. etc.
+ if its above the level of the turbo drain it could cause the turbo to leak oil into the engine. It doesn\'t take much liquid to hydraulic a diesel
thanks for the quick reply mike :wave
i forgot to mention that the car is a petrol engine and i should be ok in finding an engine, but i could still do with a rough estimation of a turbo checkup with the turbo off the car.
I would have thought too much oil would force the dipstick out and blast oil all over the engine bay, or force it out of the crankcase breather! i cant see how it could do any damage myself, other than make a mess, presumably you mom put some oil in because the oil level was too low in the first place, and i would have thought if that was too much oil in there it would have forced it out again as above within a very short time, how far did your mom travel before she had a problem?
Too much oil can be a bigger problem that running low depends on the engine and amount of overfill. If you can find out if it reved itself without any throttle applied. If so you\'re looking at a poss full rebuild. Have a look in the back of the Autotrader for your nearest engine dealer

Too much oil causes over pressure, normally it blows the oil seals or the sump gasket first though.
some engines hav oil sprayed on the under side of the pistons for lube & coolin,if this is taken away the piston expands that little extra and chews itself in the chamber,
thus little metle bits all in the oil.nackerd engine them.
this iv only seen on peuget xu 16v engines thou,
jus an idea,
mmm.to much oil i think wouldnt do what i jus said,
probly lube n cool it more, never mind,
got me thinkin ov my peuget days now,:D
The reason you get major problems with too much oil is it gets into the chambers and acts as extra fuel. This causes the revs to pick up putting more oil into the chambers and you end up with a chain reaction, engine overrevs and you end up with a knackered engine and if your really unlucky a piston or flywheel sat on your lap.

i would have thought that may happen with diesel, so if we add oil to our petrol tank the revs go up? i dont think so, more likely to oil up the plugs and stop it running in a cloud of smoke, i cant see where all the extra pressure comes from to burst oil seals or gaskets, a high oil level wont increase the pressure from the pump, i think the oil would find the easiest way out if there was that much pressure, i have seen a few blast out the push fit (at low level) dipstick and spray the engine bay, but not do any mechanical damage, just my thoughts!
