Title: Help needed - exhaust/O2 sensor/MPG!
Post by: FDRZRich on May 10, 2005, 07:55:22 AM
Hey,
Wonder if anyone can advise me....
I have a standard 96 RX-7, standard engine, exhaust, and induction. It has been 3 years since rebuilt by WGT, and its a daily driver. Around town I used to get around 15mpg, seeing about 160 out of £40 of Optimax, which was ok, I could handle that.

Last few months, noticed idle has been really low when car was hot, often stalling. Couldn\'t work out why. Had MOT, failed emmisions by miles, realised airpump was working!! Obviously that was why the idle was so bad! Got it sorted (new solenoid rack - cheers Geff@RE:worx!) idle normal, flew thru MOT.

Thing is it seems to be drinking fuel like I drink beer on a Saturday night.... I barely get 160 miles out of £50 now, and I worked out it must be doing about 10/11MPG!! Thats with hardly any boost, even worse if I give it some! I know that can\'t be right for a standard car surely! The car shows no other symptoms of problems, coolant level constant, starts fine everytime etc...

I wanted to know, would having the airpump not working for a length of time (think it must have been quite a while)
(a) clog up the cat, causing bad MPG
(b) kill the O2 sensor, causing the car to run rich all the time, causing bad MPG
(c) would a slight blow in the exhaust (gasket to backbox) cause the bad MPG/affect power or
(d) a combination of the above?!
Thanks in advance...

I\'m no expert on the air pump, but you can get lambda sensor tested. Most garages are able to test lambda sensors.
