found this on vosa website whilst checking up on emissions.
"For emissions purposes only, kit cars and amateur built
vehicles first used before 1 August 1998 and Wankel
rotary-engined vehicles first used before 1 August 1987
are to be considered first used before 1 August 1975
Kit cars and amateur built vehicles first used on or after
1 August 1998 ("S" reg) are required to obtain Single
Vehicle Approval and should be tested to the limits
stated on the registration document."
should be in section 7.3 of mot manual
and if you check what the pre 75 limits are it somthing along the lines of ...
not produce excessive amounts of smoke as to obscure the view of other road users.
ACE :D
Yup I know that from owning a 1965 Singer chamois, its visual smoke only, half the time the testers up here just pass it without checking, only ever used to get pulled about the noise due to the exhaust system only being 18" as it was just a backbox & straight thru.
Has anyone contacted Mazda about getting something to prove that import (ie FD3S VIN) RX\'s are the same as UK cars?
Everytime I have my MOT, the guy points out that technically he\'s having to lie to get it through, as the test asks \'Is the VIN xxxxxx (can\'t remember how the UK number starts!)?\' and obviously imports aren\'t!
With the introduction of the testing stations being linked directly into the DVLA soon, he said that without some official letter or such like, then he\'s not sure he\'ll be able to put it through next time?
Anyone? Clive, you seem to have good links with Mazda UK?

Mazda will never go for the UK car thing as they are quite a lot of differences, like the second cat in the downpipe the ECU etc, etc.
If it makes any difference l could supply my chassis number on request as the UK cars have a totaly different number order, they start with JMZ and not FD3S like all the imports.
Hate to do this, section 7.3 was removed from the MOT hand book a few years ago. As far as the ministry is concerned, your car passed the UK emissions requirements when new and should do so now.
I spent a long time on the phone to the ministry quoting chapter and verse....
...however if your MOT station will go along with it then good on you! :cool
...or if you are running a gen 1 you have a free liscence too....:rollin

Thanks for that Clive, it seems very frustrating...
The car easily passes the test for the UK equivalent, its not that that the tester is querying. He\'s trying to help me out by saying that basically next year they will probably have to put the reg number into the system, which will show the FD3S VIN. They will then have to test against a standard car set of values, as it does not match the system, and there is no way any RX-7 will pass that test!
Surely there are a lot of people that are going to be in the same situation as me when they introduce this, or am I missing something, you all have some trick to get it to pass a standard emmisions test?
You need to install an air bypass valve from the air box into the inlet manifold. This will bypass the AFM/MAP and make the car run lean at idle speeds. (This is assuming your running a DCAT system, if you still have the airpump and standard exhaust you should be able to pass)
Not Decatted, all standard, thats the thing, it passes the test for a UK RX-7 easily- 0% CO and HC and easily withing the lambda sensor range, but the point is that as far as the dvla/testing stations are concerned, as the VIN is different to a UK car, they won\'t be able to test it against the values for a UK car. When that is the case they have to test it against default values, ie those designed for your average 1.1 Fiesta!! Theres no way you can get the lambda reading low enough to pass that!!
Well car passed mot today, with no adjustments to commander running base map. The BET check failed, it then puts you to another check which it also failed. Its a 92 so ended up doing a non cat emmission test with 1300cc for engine size.
Idle CO% = 0.2 - 3.5 I had 2.15
Idle HC vol ppm = 0 -1200 I had 336
Also recommeded putting grease on the last part of the brake pipes where there is no plastic as this is where they\'d be likely to rust thru & i\'ve got a bush on the lower trailing arm which will need replaced in the nxt yr.
What value did you get for the lambda reading tho? Or didn\'t he take one?
took that on the first test, theres no fast idle on the non cat test, so i don think they do a lambada but could be wrong

Brett I\'m pretty sure it\'s still in the manual I looked in ... its up to date too as my dad is the local Vosa representative
Well the info i got was off VOSA\'s website & i\'d imagine it was up to date
Rich, don\'t panic. I think your tester is over-reacting! When the system goes computerised, everything that can be done using the system will be. Anything that can\'t be done will be tested as they are at the moment. Bit like Chip and Pin - you\'re still allowed to sign if you don\'t know your PIN, irrespective of what some shops will tell you.
I don\'t have the emissions figures for my MOT (back in November now) to hand. But I do remember that initially it failed on emissions, quite badly (this was mainly due to the turbo\'s passing oil). However I pointed out to the tester that the car was first registered in July 92 and that I qualified for a non-cat test. He then put it through as a non-cat (I have a cat and the air pump) and it was well within the limits. It did however almost fail on the "not produce excessive amounts of smoke as to obscure the view of other road users" test... like I said, my turbo\'s were on their way out and was passing a lot of oil into the exhaust
Rich, what year was your car registered?
Cheers
Jon
Its Jan \'96, on an N plate.
Not panicing just yet as I\'ve only just had it done, but I thought it would be best to get it sorted out in time for next year....How do you know that you will still be able to do it without putting car details into the car?
I don\'t know to be honest mate... I may get screwed when my MOT comes round. Will have to wait and see, got till November though :)
Just had my Mot a couple of days ago, its a \'96 but I think they put it through as a \'95 cos they dont have anything above that listed.
Managed to pass a \'Catalyst (closed loop) mot gas test\' with a de-catted straight thru system which im quite pleased about, thought i was going to have to faff about putting the cat back on.
On fast idle I got 0.06 CO, -1 HC, and lambda was 1.3, tolerence for that was between 0.97 and 1.6
What sort of lambda figures would they be looking for on a standardised test?

From what I remember when they tried testing mine, it was between 0.3 and 0.6!!
just had mine done its a 95 on a n plate and my idle emmissions were 6.0%co:eek:  single and ****load of mods but thought this was still very high.time for a fiddle down at reworx i think.was lucky this time but am thinking as i have no airpump might have to rig up some sort of electric airpump and run a pipe to the cat for the purposes of a mot
