Title: New boy here! Good deal, or not??
Post by: AL3X on July 11, 2003, 11:06:22 AM
Hi All :wave ,

I\'m completely new to this forum so i appologise in advance for the rediculous questions i will probably ask you all in the future!!

Anyway, i\'m looking to buy my first RX7 and was wondering if you guys....and gals think this sounds like a good deal:

92(J), 3rd generation, black leather, air-con, new engine 40\'000mile ago with receipts from mazda (cars done 102k miles), CAT1 alarm for £6500 from a dealer.

Only problem is that its an Auto what are the disadvantages of the Automatic, apart from not having a clutch of course!!

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Alex

as far as performance goes i think theres little or no difference:D
just get the suspension checked and other bits which wear after high milage. The engine should be good for 10-20,000 miles before a re-build, possibly more

Alex, welcome on board.

Price seems about right, as Rich said might need a rebuilt in 15-30,000 miles. So if its going to be your daily driver get a warranty when you buy it. (One that covers rebuilds)

Might also be worth checking with the dealer to see if they will allow an RAC/AA inspection. They will be able to cover everything except the engine.

Thanks for the help so far guys. I\'ve just been down to look at her in my lunch break, WOW she looks stunning! The interior is imaculate, the leather is in such good condition for the mileage. Its had 17\'s put on it which are a little dated but nevermind i could buy another set! The suspension looks damn low, so i think the suspension won\'t have done the 100 odd thousand anyway as its been changed. The engine however is totally standard apart from a sebring(i think) twin exhaust. If this car wasn\'t an auto i\'d have rushed to the sales office and put a deposit down there and then. But i\'ve had a little think and i\'m gonna go back 2morrow and bye it depending on the compression test results, a warrenty and an AA inspection. Does that sound a good idea? Its having the whole front end resprayed due to poor paint aswell, which cant be bad.....

ye sounds a good idea,  the AA\'s opinion on the engine might not be entirley accurate as they don\'t really know too much about them.

Welcome to the Club!
I think that I would buy it.As for the disadvanteges of an Auto I think the most important disadvantage of the Auto is control, you
can\'t down shift. The automatic is better for racing actually, you cant shift any better than an automatic.Plus I think you can get a computer chip that at WOT(Wide Open Throttle)it shifts at 7000
rpm\'s.Another advantage of the Automatic is not having to release
the gas as you shift which could cause backfire and it also releases boost presure between every gear.Overall the manual
is funer to drive than a boring automatic,I would get sick of not shifting, its a true feel of the racing sport!

To be honest that was my exact worries about the auto, the control andracing side of things also the fact that i really enjoy the whole gear changing thing, still i think it will still be good fun anyway :D !! I am going along on thursday to talk through the final details i.e warrenty cover p/x etc.... So i should be an owner very soon if all goes well.

Is there anyway to put it in like a sport mode so it revs higher or anything like that??

Now you are probably going to think i\'m really sad but i love the sound of dump valves, whats the implication of the auto. Obviously like you just said there is no boost loss at gear change so when will the dump valve actually dump, when lifting the throttle??

the dump valve is great, i love em too:D  winds people up:rollin

the dump valve will only make a noise in the auto when you lift off the throttle, so drive up behind someone and lift off:rolleyes:  you won\'t get it during gear changes tho:mad:

no cluth leaves the left foot to do the breaking :D :D :D

Yeah I think i\'ll have to practise that, the last time i had a go at left foot breaking I nearly went through the windscreen I was hitting the pedal so hard!

So any ideas on dump valve prices roughly? Just preparing as that will be my first mod probably!!

best to phone one of the specialists on the links page. i think about £300 is the going rate.

If i was going for a dump valve i\'d go for a flutter valve, they sound different and cool as F@#K :wave  put probably 10x the price.

When you want to force the auto transmission to change gear before it normally all you would do is lift your your foot off the throttle slightly and it will change up a gear, when you do this you hear the dump valve. Also the stock dumpvalve is very loud.
But you need a aftermarket induction kit to hear it as the stock air box is soo restrictive.

Really, I didn\'t know the 3rd gen had a dump valve fitted as standard, I thought the loud dump vavle on my car was aftermarket, but couldnt find the thing

To change gears on an auto - pull the lever from D to 3 - causes a downshift. This is particurlarly useful when running at high speed into corners - it gets the engine to help with the breaking - like dropping it in 3rd on a manual when you approach a corner.
