Title: new clucth noise - help needed!
Post by: michaelb on May 04, 2005, 03:10:49 PM
Hi All

I just had a new stock cluch fitted fro my 96 RB Bathurst.  It was begining to slip a touch when second turbo did cut in.
The clutch was fitted by RX7 experts.
While the new clutch works great ( testerd it on the motorway going back to London ) in second and 4th gear it makes hissing / grinding / plate spinning noise.  Dead quiet in 1st and 3rd gear.  It is not loud but irritating especially since it wasn\'t there before.  I called the garage and they assured me normal and in time, being a new clutch will settle.  Can anyone help and identify this strange noise?

Regards
MichaelB

some times clutches do need some beeding in. The only other thing to make a noise is a release bearing which if a complete clutch was supplied, I would have thought would have been changed, but ask if it was a complete clutch. Bearings also tend to make the noise when stationary, about the only other thing I could think of. Perhaps just give it a week to bed in.

Hi g11ary

Thanks for the replay.  I paid £350 exl VAT for the clutch and fitting.  When stationary there is no noise.  What makes it so strange is that in 1st and 3rd gear in, the clutch isn\'t making any noise ?????!!!!
I( must admit that the response in higher gears is now superb but the noise gets to me  Even if the clutch was not complete, the old bearings weren’t noisy.  I hope you are right as I do not fancy another 2.5 hrs drive to the garage...
Regards,
Michaelb

Hi Michael,

I think you now need to ask if they dropped the oil out of the gear box like l allways have and that they definatly refilled it !!

Sounds like for that money all you will have got was a center plate put in the car rather than a complet kit, which is no problem provideing you were made awear of it, l personaly thing to be fair to whoever fitted the clutch that you will need to take the car back and get it checked before anything develops further .

It is a shame...it took me 2.5 hrs to get there first think in the morning and 3.5 hrs to get back to London.   I will call them tomorow...More expence - petrol.

Hi

reworx.  I must say that the car drives superb now so I don\'t know what to think.....Should I drive there and have it checked out or will this settle...Incedently it was a clutch kit which used to replace my clutch.

The guys at Reworx seemed very knowledgable and answered all my questions re my car and future possible modifications...

It could be the pilot bearing, release bearing or even your gearbox either with oil level low or now a new problem.
I don\'t think that ReWorx would do this job wrong, they are pretty good usually with this sort of thing.
The price is pretty low for a full clutch kit,I normally charge a fair bit more than that for a full kit.Are you sure you had a new pressure plate too?

They have done lots of Clutch\'s Im sure and most ok, although Geff stuffed mine up. Before going back there check for oil, as it wont make it back there with no oil and then they will riggle as they did with my turbo, that after several hundred pounds to overhaul, turned out to be bad fitting, if oil level ok then get it back.

not sure what I had done.  One think is for sure - the noise was not there with the old clutch.

I think they may be too busy to check that out for me.  They seem to need around 2/3 weeks notice to book the job.  I will call them tomorow.  I am keen to sort that out.  What would you charge to check and posibly solve the issue ?
There was nothing up with my gear box before...Maybe it is the oil level but why would it efect only 2nd and 4th gear ?

gear box oil. Would have to jack it up to do it, or maybe get AA to check it out under pretence of noise and dont want to move it.

Hi all

I have just spoken to Chris from Reworks who reassured me that they will have a look at the problem.
I am going to REworks on Saturday morning to have it checked out.

Thank you for helping out with info

Indecently the pressure plate and bearing have been changed.

Michaelb

Title: clutch noise saga ended
Post by: michaelb on May 07, 2005, 10:05:01 PM
Hi All

I went today back to REWORX to get the noise sorted out and you will never guess what it was.

2 rubber round covers and a cushion round type thing were left out  ( they go under the gear stick.)
The rubber cover which was left in had a rip and every time the gear stick would move down to second, fourth and reverse; a gap would create and let the noise travel up the car.  Ones the missing rubber covers and cushion were put back the noise was gone completely.

Any way I had front pads fitted and Jeff only charged me for the pads and nothing for the labour since they left the bits out and I had to drive back from London.  I guess that covered my petrol.

So guys â€" Jeff is a gentlemen

Michaelb
