Title: Low Boost
Post by: rxangus on July 09, 2003, 01:33:55 PM
Hi,

First post from me....

Last month I took delivery of a 96 Type RB from Newera and had been experiencing some boost problems from the start.

In essence my boost pattern in 3rd was something like 10-7-6 instead of the biblical 10-8-10.

Unfortunately my nearest RX expert is WGT which is a 700 mile round trip so instead I went to my local tuning place who diagnosed a sticking secondary wastegate diverter rod. They cleaned this and my rolling road RWHP rose to 200 from 170 before. I’ve been back and had the car tuned and it’s now putting out 225RWHP which I think is correct for type RB (265 at flywheel) . It feels more responsive

Strange thing is that my boost pattern is now more like 9-7-4 even though the performance is better.

Yesterday I compared acceleration with another FD (1994 pretty much stock) and he wiped the floor with me acceleration wise.

Before I drive all the way to WGT, does anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

Suggestions so far have included blocked (pre) cat or dirty dump valve.

Many thanks

Angus Anderson

Angus, welcome to the forums.

A common problem is the pipes from the air box to the turbo\'s collapeses due to heat. Check the bottom pipe as this is the one going to the secondary turbo.

The other part to check is the air filter. If it is anything but spotless it will drop the boost.

Other thing is fluid levels. Oil and water can effect boost. I have found this on my own FD.

Dan,

Thanks for that.

Can you get collapsed hoses as soon as the engine is warmed up and boost applied? I have poor boost right from startup (engine is always warmed first though).

Other things I should have mentioned are that the stock air box has been replaced (in Japan) by twin cone intakes which appear spotless and that the car has done 32K miles since new.

Oil and coolant levels are fine. Oil was changed 1500 miles ago.

Cheers

Here I go with my broken english...

Ok, Dan is absolutely right. First to check is the piping from the charger to intercooler and from the intercooler to manifold.

Problems with second charger may be result of faulty vakuum tubes, faild solenoid valves, or defective bypass valve.

the best source for troubleshooting is:

Hope this help....

If those twin cones are the ARC induction kit that will probably be what your problem is. They are known for being the biggest heat soak induction kit ever made for an rx7. I brought a car over that had 39,000 miles on the clock it felt a lack of power the same as yours from the start. Iput the stock airbox on instead now boost is fine. If it\'s and arc that you have bin it.

If you getting good boost on the primary turbo the it will not be a generic problem, like induction or intercooler pipe related. Also it is unlikely that the actual turbocharger is faulty, due to the miledge of the car.
I bet it is a control system issue, I would recommend you set your self aside a day, and start checking over the vacuum hoses under the plenum. You will more than likely get lucky and th problem may be obvious. The other option is taken it to a specialist, altough cus of where you live I think it may be worth learning more about your car anyway.

I\'m getting ok boost on primary turbo (0.5+ bar)

I\'ve already had the plenum cover off but all hoses/lines looked connected and okay. Not sure if they were all visible though.

When you say plenum cover? do you mean the actual plenum?

I guess I do! I mean the silver cover immediately aft of the pressure chamber.

BTW the aftemarket air intakes say "Power - Air Intake II" or similar on them.
