Title: 2nd gen Diffs, LSD or not?
Post by: Brett on May 03, 2005, 12:55:24 PM
Which versions (UK) of the FC came with an LSD?

I have an EGI (1988) and a TII (1991) would either of these have had an LSD as standard?

Cheers!

Yeah, someone answer!

I, too have been wondering this about my 1990 TII Cab.

In theory you could test it by putting one wheel in the mud and one in the dry and see if the power takes the easiest route or is diverted to the wheel with grip.

Or you could reads the mazda technical manuals* and look under the car, something I\'ve not had time to do yet.

sorry cant help with which uk model has LSD
hope this may help though

their are three types of diff heads

1 single spinner or open diff, only one wheels spins
2 viscous type lsd, not proper LSD but can spin both wheels
3 LSD proper, spins both wheels has clutch packs in differential, also best way to identify a lsd look for yellow tag on filler plug on diff housing and it says LSD on it

if you jack car up to check if you spin one wheel the other should spin same way then its a lsd viscous or Proper LSD tag will only tell from outside
also single spinner wheel spins opposite direction to the one being spinned

i am very sure your new turbo II will have an LSD. although i am going on what i read somewhere that after 1989 all the turbosl came with LSD\'s!

Im pretty sure this would apply to the cab dont see why it wouldnt.

s4 turbos came with clutch type diff the s5 came with viscous lsd. both are old and probably not worth having now. one of my t2\'s vlsd is better than the other one but im going to put a torsen type in to make sure i leave two black lines when i pull away

2 cents...
I have put a torson lsd from an FD into my old housing. I can confirm that there was only a normal open diff and not lsd. I will put a crate on there being no lsd in Jay`s casing when he does the conversion.

I have had 3 TII\'s  and my cousin has had 2.  None had an LSD of any sort.

I also have 3 different Diffs from a TII in the workshop and none of them are LSD,  if you ask any of the breakers (Tim),  LSD\'s are as rare as rocking H... S....

As fas as i was aware, the LSD was an optional extra on the UK model, But was stock on the Efini which didnt come into the uk.

I have checked all the diffs we have and if you turn one wheel, the other either doesnt turn or turns the other way,    The diff from the efini turns both wheels,  you cant turn them independantly.  Definately LSD in my book.

If you look on ebay in US, you see quite a few but the EGI models are a slightly a different setup to the TII.  The series 4 takes the same internals as the 1st gen GSL SE (US Model) clutch pack type,   thats what one of the quick first gens in this country has in it.

There are several different opinions on 2nd Gen LSD\'s,  all i know is that i have one and my cousins FD engined TII has one, but these were fitted by us after lots of looking..

Thanks for the clarification.  I have a potention buyer for the black beast, but he wants it for drifting (Not the way I wanted to see her go, but beggars cant be choosers) so he needed to know about the diff.

 Again, thanks guys. :)

:o :o  well ill start with my excuse\'s. when you pull away hard in either of the t2\'s they spin both wheels. if you floor it on a round about in the dry the inside wheel spins up. it was my thought that the diff was an old vicous unit that didnt quite have the guts it use to so sort of worked if you load it up hard enough.

i know the wheels go in opposite directions if you jack it up but i thought that was because the vicous wasnt under load so it wouldnt work unless it was under load.

i have a spare diff so havent taken my diffs apart but it was out of one of the last t2\'s so i thought it also was a vlsd.BUT its not. the shame of it all is too much for me so ill go and drown myself in a vat of synthetic diff oil

so what you drinking johnny, looks like iou a case

i hate know it all\'s

hey thanks for so much info.

i didn\'t think i had LSD as the car always slides clockwise as it were in the wet, although it doesn\'t behave like my vw t25 which is grounded if one wheel is on a wet leaf.

BTW does anyone know why the TII cab lacks ABS and has smaller ( although arguably prettier ) wheels than the TII ?

p.s what do i need to go to rotorstock ? will there be a bar ? wil someone be able to explain how to drive my TII properly ?

2 p worth

You simply cannot judge a Limit Slip Dif just by rotating one wheel and getting a reaction from the other side... :o

A Viscious type Diff needs a lot of load to function as it is designed... No spin test will make this happen, don\'t care how much you go to the gym!

 A \'Torsen type\' even worse.....
The Torsen differential is simply a torque multiplier that works through the use of friction generated by thrust forces from the internal gearing.  It multiplies what torque is available from the wheel that is starting to spin-up or lose traction and sends that available torque, multiplied by the TBR, to the slower turning wheel with the better traction.
It\'s a torque multiplier.  The Torsen requires some type of resistance or friction in the system to function properly.  A wheel in the air provides zero torque or friction on the system and as the Torsen multiplies the available torque, zero, by its TBR, the end result is still zero.  In response to this, we developed the Torsen T-2R with pre-load to combat those wheel in the air situation.

 Hope this clears it up!

Probably more confusing..... :rollin :rollin :rollin

Right now with regards to the original question.. :p

I read and understand that all JDM & US spec Turbo models came with a Limit Slip Diff as standard!
 The series 4 \'86 - 88\' with a clutch pack type LSD.
 The series 5 \'89 - 91\' with a Torsen type LSD.

I am still not 100% certain what\'s the dig as I have no experience personally opening either one of these for a peak!
 Well not yet anyway......
