Title: worrying smoke when queueing in traffic
Post by: barmar on May 01, 2005, 07:54:19 PM
Went to Crail today and when I was queueing to get in there was a lot of smoke (quite oily looking blue smoke) coming from the exhaust. Started after I had been in the queue for maybe 45-50 minutes. Is this normal, i\'m thinking not, although a bit smokey when I started and left it soon returned to normal.
I\'ve never really had to queue for any length of time since I got the car, we\'re lucky for that up here with less traffic on the road, so I\'ve no idea if it\'s normal for my car or not.

Does anyone else suffer from this?

Can anyone help, please tell me I\'m not going to need a rebuild soon cause that would be a disaster.

I have my fingers crossed waiting for your help

Cheers
Barry

PS was that your black mean machine I saw Bobster, I remember seeing a post saying that you were going to be at Crail this weekend. The cars looking sweet by the way.

Generally speaking you dont really want an RX stood in traffic for long periods, if you do not have a oil temp gauge then you are unaware of temps rising.

While driving the oil temp will sit around 70oC but if stuck in traffic on a hot day the temp can rise over 100oC and thus start smoking when getting unstable.

When i go to car shows i either leave early before all the que\'s or leave at the end when everyone has already gone.

Hope that helps buddy, get a POWER FC and OIL TEMP gauge and you will see problems before they arise.

Cheers mate a power fc is already on the shopping list but I think I\'ll shuffle it above the new spoiler and respray now. What are the chances of me getting away without doing any damage, It was probably smoking for about 10 minutes before I could get it parked, in what probably wasn\'t a space but wasn\'t really in anyones way. It ran fine on the way home after the engine had warmed up it stopped smoking and was back to normal. I\'m now kind of glad it wasn\'t a sunny day, it was totally chucking it down when I got there still warm though if it had been sunny it would have been really hot.

Thanks for your help gurj. Anyone got a cheap power fc and commander going??:D

Keep your eyes peeled on the "for sale" section, theres always PFC\'s coming up for sale at reasonable prices, cant quote you anyone as mine was already in the car when i bought it :(

As for damage, hopefully you might be ok but the Apex seals do not like the heat so just keep an eye on any problems you get.

The Power FC saved me a rebuild when i had a water leak on the RAD, on the motorway the water temp said 105oC when it should have been 74oC i pulled over straight away and saved the engine. Without the FC the stock temp gauge would not have moved until 115oC and possible engine failure and thus rebuild :(

So try to get the PFC asap,

Rx7\'s run notoriously rich, and its just the oil build up that is buning off a quick blatt will get rid of. When PFC is fitted get it properly mapped as it will run very rich when first plugged in.

An APEXi power FC is a replacement ECU. It is an essential upgrade if you are planning to modify your 3rd gen RX7. The standard ECU doesn\'t cope well with modifications struggling to adjust the timing and fueling which can result in detonation which in turn can lead to burst seals and engine rebuild time (mucho £££).

FYI the problem I had above turned out to be a blown turbo which was exacerbatted (sp) by an incorrectly fitted oil seal leaking oil into the turbo. Result a £5k bill for reconditioning the turbos and an engine rebuild. The car runs great now though.
