Hiya guys/gals,
I was wondering if anyone has had experience running coilovers on 235/40/17 rubber (Toyo R888 tyres) with standard arches.. ?
Mine rub like hell, even on the stiffest setting, and it\'s not as though there isn\'t much clearance from the tyre to the arch. Is it best to roll the arches or put the car on stilts ????
I\'ve already cracked the paint and i\'ve only had the car a week and done sod all miles...... :(
What offset wheels are you using? 235 should go on easily enough.
Presume its the rear that has the problem?
Don\'t know the offset i\'m afraid..... they\'re enkei Split rims....and funnily enough it\'s the front !! The back doesn\'t touch at all.
Definitely the offset those should clear easily.
rgds
Hmmmmm...........trouble is, it clearly doesn\'t.........
For a 40 profile tyre, the side wall is quite tall though, could it possibly be this style of tyre that is making the difference ??
lol just seen which car you bought. looks like it\'s only 1 inch off the ground that won\'t help
lol ok ok, point taken on that, but the car is approximately 10mm higher than in the pics as the previous owner knew it rubbed.....
but it\'s still rubbing, there\'s about 30mm from the top edge of the tyre to the arch at the mo...
Well the fronts when using 17\'s should be 235/45R17. Which is even taller that 235/40R17.
As you have coilovers, try raising the car a couple of turns.
Fish
It\'s looking like that\'s the only thing i can do.......
Bit annoying that the coilovers can\'t cope though
Seen some RX\'s with the tryes tucked right up and running 18\'s/19\'s...... without a wide arch kit.
Maybe a set of adjustable TCA\'s would help ? Camber the wheel a mm or 2 in at the top....
I don\'t want the car looking like it\'s on stilts ya see.....and there\'s plenty of other\'s out there lower.
This could be partly due to the alignment/setup of the suspension. It\'s adjustable in pretty much every direction and that could cause the rubbing.
Is it rubbing under compression or on lock?
If it\'s under compression then adding some negative camber would help. It certainly soulds as though the offset is wrong. As Fish pointed out you should be running 235/45 on 17" rims. This equated to the same rolling diameter as the standard 225/50/16" wheels.
The suspension was bought and fitted, but never set up.....
Just compression, over little bumps etc..... even stiffened right up it does it.....
I\'d have to double check as i possibly have got it the wrong way round, but i \'think\' the rears are a 45 profile.....
People with 17" wheels tend to run 235/45 front and 255/40 rear...

Get it properly setup!

As IainT has said, the proper sizes are 235/45R17 Front and 255/40R17 Rear.

Why would they be "proper" sizes. You can run anything that fits on the rim safely surely.
They just might be the sizes that keep it closest to toe original rolling radious if thats what worries you?
Just Ive run all sorts of stuff, the rolling radious thing doesnt bother me in the slightest.
I\'ve only had the car a week, it will be corner weighted and setup correctly asap.......... ;)
It was my mistake, the fronts are a 45 profile, sorry guys !
Found out that the fronts have spacers fitted.......so this could be the problem. Apparently they were needed to accept the size of the caliper. The bell was also shaved but never tried on it\'s own, the spacers were fitted at the same time and it looks like i could easily get away with changing the current 3mm spacer with a 1mm spacer and this will hopefully solve my rubbing problem !
Cheers guys !

You\'ve hit the nail on the head Lee - if the radius causes the speedo to overread no worries but if it\'s under-reading (apart from being illegal) you could quite quickly wave goodbye to your licence.
There\'s a conversion program on the web that shows the difference in speeds between a cars standard wheel and tyre size and whatever the larger wheel and tyre size is...... The difference between a 16" and an 18 or 19" rim is only a few mph...... hardly licence loosing stuff...... unless your speedo is reading 98mph and really you\'re doing 101mph.....but surely that\'s splitting hairs ??
Yeah thats exactly the way I look at it.
The differences are so small percentage wise. And how accurate is the speedo anyway, and how accurate has your mph conversion been carried out on top of that. So many variables already imho.
As for the problem, let us know what its like with the spacer off.
Couldn\'t agree more.
I\'ll let everyone know Monday, will be taking them apart on Sunday.....
;)

Lee, they are the proper sizes, as this is what MAZDA fitted on the later model cars. Oh sorry Mazda must have got it wrong.
Evo, sorry about that, not what you need on this thread.

Now that is a much better answer, and one I find acceptable rather than the rolling radious stuff.
Still doesnt stop people changing loads of other Mazda bits though eh :p ;)

*shrug*
I tend to cruise along on the m-way @ early-mid 80\'s... 5% isn\'t much for the radius to be out by and that takes you from \'safe\' to 3-points. Or if you\'re cutting it fine and pressing on the difference between 3 points and a day in court.
The calculator online is definately very useful but I don\'t always remember what the actual vs indicated is.
Plus we\'re mostly driving cars with speedo conversion chips that we assume are actually giving an accurate measure of speed but as it\'s all about resistances (and resistors have a margin of error by design)... it all adds up.
Simpe way round it is to use one fo the GPS radar warning systems as they give pretty accurate mph reading in real time.
Another side (apart from Danny\'s post about the sizes MAzda fitted as standard in later models) is that the suspension setup is done with the wheel/tyre combination and changing that could bugger up handling (although probably not too much).
Ordering a chip this weekend to convert to MPH as it\'s still on KPH....
I see what you\'re saying about things adding up and the 3 points etc, i was only referring to the point that i seriously doubt if you would get pulled and given points for doing 33 in a 30 zone, but if you know you\'re doing over the legal limit by a fair margin then what do you expect ?? Regardless of how accurate your speedo is because of the wheels or MPH converter....
\'Can you tell me why you were doing 104mph sir.......\'
\'but officer, my speedo was saying 99mph.....\'
I dont\' think it\'s going to matter to much in that scenario ! :p
Thanks again guys, all interesting stuff !! ;)
