Just wondering as i dont have funds for the intercooler i want (ie V mount or charge cooler etc) & my intake temps do like to go up somewhat on the stock intercooler when giving it a portion of the ole WOT.
Anyway bottom line what\'s the crack with water injection &/or any alternatives in terms of pros, cons & costs etc? My brain is hungry for knowledge (although limited in understanding it

lol)
Basically would it be a wise & cheaper addition to current stock cooling system &/or performance goodies.....?
Cheers

Hi Si
If you go on the Ausrotary site there\'s a big section in Tech reference on water injection. Those Guy\'s down there have been using it for some time and seem to know what there doing.
Regards Kevin
Had the aquamist 1s system on previous car (will put it on the fd when I get a chance :D). The one I\'ve got comes with a solonoid which detects boost pressure and activates the water injection once the preset pressure has been achieved, hence the cooling effect once you\'re on the go. Quite a cheap bit of kit when compared to a fmic kit.
Pros: lowers inlet temps when on the go, relatively inexpensive, can be used to tune around det and achieve higher performance
Cons: if the car has been mapped for use with water and you run out of water... goodbye engine :( Makes no difference to inlet temps when stuck in traffic/ driving off boost, i.e smic still suffers from heatsoak.
re works have a realy cool watter intoercoller its about 700 bucks tho it has a rad and its like a normal pipe with a watter jaket around it
There is no reason why you cant replace the intercooler completely with a water injection kit, you\'ll save no end of pipework and weight........
Make it 100% reliable though, boost cuts off if water out etc, as memski said.
Tim runs this way on his 1st Gen :)
sounds like the charge cooler your on about Yonner but cheers anyway. Hmmmm so to cut to the chase who does what & what is best on the WI front with what limitations & budget requirements......

I have a coolingmist.com kit on the way which I picked up in an RX7club.com group buy. $425 inc shipping. It\'s 2 stage with sensors to detect the water is flowing and adjust the boost levels the jets activate. i went for this one cos its cheap, and also cos he developed it on an RX7 and there is good support for DIYers (like myself!)
Can let you know what it\'s like when I get it if you are interested
Some interesting threads but loads more out there to read

Just to add to ealier post (memski)
...the primary purpose of water injection is not to reduce intake temperatures (...thats only if you spray it onto your interrcooler).
Adding water to the combustion mix will reduce detonation and result in a more controlled burn through absorbing heat and other funky chemical stuff.
So it is useful even if you have been sitting in a bank holiday trafiic jam behind a eddie stobart lorry for an hour and you hammer to WOT on full boost !!
I\'ve got Power Development WI System from Dragon and it does what it should. The boost pressure sensor triggers the pump and water solenoid valve at preselected boost and keeps the inlet temps at safe level when im giving that ole WOT;)
I had my water injection, just past the SMIC and saw a drop of 30C under full boost. I am in the process of fitting a T78 and charge cooler but will still be using water injection as well.
When set up properly it will reduce intake tempratures as well as allow higher AFR.

OK then folks who sells what variety of WI etc & how much are we talking? I\'m kinda sold on the idea/theory anyway just wondering where from now & couldn\'t at first glance see anything on the main sponsors links.
Those that have it how much have you spent on it & setting it up?
PM me if you dont wana post here.....

I know REworx have a custom kit made up using the same pump as mine and as I understand quite a reasonable cost. You have yer Aquamist kits [I\'m sure if you type in //www. ....... you will find it] other than that have a look round, but, it might pay you to have a chat with Geff 1st though.
Hope this helps
PS: since fitting my WI my temps under booooost are a revalation [sp] :o
I fitted an aquamist kit to my last car, a MR2 Turbo.
Very easy to fit, kit even included a tap to thread the hole you have to drill.
The advice i was given from the guy selling them was to get the nozzle as close to the inlet butterflys as possible as if it is put just after the intercooler you lost a lot of the cooling effect.
I also fitted a washer bottle with a low level warning light (got that from a scrapyard) so i would know when to water level was low and not drive to silly.
You may have to get the car on a rolling road afterward, i certainly did on the MR2 as it ran like cack after fitting, once it had been set up it drove lovely.
Dunno what the total cost was, kit was about £300 then the set up on the RR, probably about £400 in total.
hope this helps

Primary purpose is to lower combustion temps.
You can use two nozzles one on the pipe just after intercooler
to kill intake temps and one in or as close to the throttle body to kill combustion temps.
I tuned a car to 1.4 bar of boost with water injection and the max knock at peak torque was 14 either side of peak torque was around 3 & 4.

If you do go for an aquamist system, get the more expspensive one, it has a warning system to let you know if the jets are blocked.
Dunno if any of the other systems on the market have a warning system, but if i ever do buy another it will be a feature i would want, as it was allways at the back of my mind when i was booting the car.

getting mine fitted wed shd be able to up the boost a bit then 1.1 at first see how it goes then 1.2 hopefully
I have made a full WI kit for around about £50 all in, I got most of the bits from the scrappy. The other bits I got from ERL i.e. the 100micron filter and atomising jet. The kit worked really well and made the car so much smoother on boost; however I don\'t think I\'d risk using such a cheap method on an expensive rotary engine, as a 5 gtt is a lot cheaper to rebuild if it did go worng ;)
Now from the experience I gained from the WI kit I made, i would definitely want some kind of flow warning/sensor just incase a jet got blocked, water ran out or pump failed. I am tempted to make a kit for our FD trackcar, but this time I would definitely use a "proper" pump although I\'d probably use a very similar kit for the rest of it. Just time is stopping me at the moment as I don\'t even know if the engine runs yet!

My new site should be up in next couple of days, as the company Im leaving are determind to cause the max disruption, but when its working you will be able to see the whole Aquamist range.
System 1
This starter kit will enable you to enter the exciting world of water injection: a high-power magnetic piston pump and a specially-designed atomising jet form the basis of this rugged system 1. The water-pump is activated when an adjustable pressure switch, fitted to the inlet manifold, reaches its preset point: delivery rate can be altered by changing water-jet sizes.
£380 inc vat
System 2c
This newly developed system is designed solely for users equipped with their own ECU so he can program his own water injection map. This system is being used by two top works WRC teams in the 1999 World Rally Championship. The system provides a pre-pressurised water line up to 8 bars and the flow rate is metered by our latest High speed Valve (HSV). The inline valve is made of high grade Stainless steel and capable of achieving a cycling rate of over 250Hz.
£494 inc vat
System 2d
For those who wants a 3-D water injection MAP but do not want to spend the time-consuming task of mapping, this system is perfect for you.
The heart of the system is a newly developed controller that reads the PWM signal from the engine\'s fuel injector (including Peak and Hold type) and convert it to drive the High Speed Valve to deliver water, it draws less than 10ma from the pulsed line. This will enable the water injection to follow a fixed water/fuel ratio.
A 3-30psi Adjustable Pressure Switch (normally closed) sets the cut-in point relative to the manifold pressure. It just cannot be simpler for the user.
The system provides a pre-pressurised water line up to 8 bars and the flow rate is metered by our High speed Valve (HSV). This inline valve is made of high grade Stainless steel. As usual, except for the water tank, the system is supplied with everything needed to be fitted with ease.
£556.00 inc vat
System 2e
An advanced version of the system 2d. Allowing the user to adjust the water flow from the dashboard. There is also provision for those using 2d, 2c &1s to upgrade to the 2e system. Not available for sale until approx March 2005.
£ still waiting.
System 2s
This is the ultimate water injection system: its function is directly comparable to a standard car\'s fuel injection system, except it controls water-flow. In addition, it has diagnostic circuitry designed to detect blocked water-jets and cut pipes. A special output link from the ECU can inform other systems in the event of a fault condition, so boost-pressure can be lowered to minimise engine damage. A pre-pressurized system enables instant response on demand.
£688.00 inc vat
they also have some great dash dispalys.
