Title: Rad Weld to seal O-Ring?
Post by: Oedipus Rex on April 26, 2005, 12:39:19 PM
I was vexing before that I might have an O-Ring failure after a det on the Dyno, which it turned out I didn\'t but I had a thought.

I\'m sure we all know about Rad weld and how the particles are forced away from the water, so it runs along the edges of the pipes, and is forced into any holes. It then hardens solid after getting hot then cold, so forms a reasonably permanent sealing on small holes in water systems.

If you had a small hole in one of your water seal and put some Rad Weld through the system, would it not find its way to the hole in the O-Ring and seals the gap, once it hardened?

I know this sounds like a bit of a crackpot idea but at present I can\'t think of a reason why it wouldn\'t work. I\'m certain it\'s none corrosive, it just based on copper. If it did work, even just for 6 months or so, it could certainly save you huge amounts of cash on having your car rebuilt.

I talked with Carl over a year ago about this and he reccomended trying a ceramic based additive that might work in this way - apparently better than rad weld as it wouldn\'t gunk up the rest of the internals.

Only problem I can see with this is the actual pressure when the ring fails is from combustion into the coolant when the engine is running.  Once you stop the engine the pressure is the other way as the coolant system is pressurised.  It might work during this phase but there wouldn;t be a flow of the material - just that which is present at the region of the system!

If you\'ve got a problem then trying it can\'t do any harm and may eke out a little more life allowing savings for a  rebuild.  It\'s only going to eb temporary though...

agreed it would only be temporary but it could be temporary for a while I reckon.

After thinking about this I was looking at a few Rex sites to see if anyone had tried this. On lightning in a world of thunder, A guy over there said he used a product for this exact purpose, which I\'m guessing is a yank version of Rad Weld by the description. It  lasted him 2 years as a solution for his O-Ring seal break. Not a bad result if you can get it.

I remember reading about this on one of the yank forums. Someone had used a rad weld style fix with apparent success. Only problem was he had to run the car on pure water for some reason, something to do with the rad weld getting broken down by EG.
