Awesome! Can\'t wait to see the results. Are you gonna be running the chevvy N/A? Only problem is that the sbc is so goddam heavy compared to the little rotary. Have you thought about using any other V8\'s? Toyota\'s 4.3 is all-alloy, and it\'s got 32 valves (and no pushrods!! :D , gotta love the old-skool).

Nice one,  gota love the sbc, ran a few yanks in the past....might have some bits and bobs around in the garage if your interested ill pm you. :)

your a cheeky geeeet...lol spec list is c west body kit,ab flug front bumper,gt rear wing, rays split rims 17",rear cage and diagonal,....5.7 litre motor, rebuilt 350sbc with 327 hi po heads and a 278 cam...,for a bit of punch...:)holley 600 four barrel, custom headers into hks hyper exhaust...tiptronic th350 box, custom cosworth diff(so gearing can be changed easily to suit application)...car is all black..mmmmmmmmmm gotta love black stealth cars... car should be roughly 347 bhp and 368 torque@2-2500 rpm... not everyones cup of char but am sure will turn a few heads as v8 sound is on par with a big turbo and screamer pipe sound......

Kool.... but rotary engine or not... An RX7 needs to BLOWN...
Those US V8\'s can easily handle the breath of a turbocharger...

Gawd that\'s a big ol\' lump of metal! It does sit quite far back tho doesn\'t it. Is the gbox in the stock location? What\'s the clearance round the engine like? Imagine it\'s gonna be a job to squeeze the headers in there.

Any more pics of it lately?

I assume there\'s gonna be a whole in the bonnet? Or have you managed to get the power plant to sit lower down?
Title: rx7 v8 project...
Post by: rxv8 on June 03, 2005, 10:48:30 AM
no mre pic yet,yes there will be whole in the bonnet as the engine would not sit down low enough due to the front bottom pulley being to close to the very high steering rack on the rx7...it will be having a small height cowl induction hood center grafted in to the original bonnet, made from a sheet of ali...:wave

Good luck with it all.

Im currently thinking about a FD3 with an LS1 as a little project. The only thing that puts me off at the moment is our german TÜV :/ As I want it for my daily driver.

I take it it\'s going to be a drag car. V8 will be a lot heavier than a 13B and the weight distribution will be all wrong for track purposes - well it would take a LOT of work to get it to handle well without masses of understeer anyway. Cool project though, good luck but in my eyes its an engine downgrade. :)

how much additional weight are we talking here ? stock engine & bits removed v v8 + new bits installed ?

Also, depends upon the make of the V8 - maybe it\'s an all alloy block. I don\'t know about these american engines much - usually they\'re cast iron, but you never know! The rover V8 for example is all alloy - makes it really light!

Post by: rxv8 on June 16, 2005, 02:19:15 PM
yes but to be fair you would have to spend 8,000 plus to get ant decent performance from that engine...i have used a 5.7 chevy sbc,its virtually standard just has 327 hi pi heads and a cam...= 347bhp and 368 torque...i have not built this to drag,or track,i like v8s and i like the rx7,hence the project...as far as weight distribution goes if you look at the pics in this thread where the dummy engine sits i think you will find it sits as far back as the 13b,maybe a little further...so it should handle fine...as when you get down to the weight difference between the two its only a matter of the weight of a person....anyway i am sure there will be plenty of critiscm and people not liking the car,and ye it wont be as fast as a lot of you single turbo boys...but i like it...:)

i think rx7 and v8 makes for one sweet motor.anyone thats heard a yank v8 will have to admit it is superb, only one equiv is tuned impreza boxer with straight thru exhaust and these to looks of rx7  :eek  :eek what a car wld love to see and hear finished result

done some reading on this (bored as hell at work today) and this is quite appealing actually, no engine rebuilds and keeping a very close weight distirbution to stock. weight wise there is very little difference if you take into account all the items you would loose with the rotary setup out. very common hybrid amongst yanks.

got a few Q\'s for you rxv8:

1. assuming that you are not using hinsons kit since you have to customise the hood due to clearance issues, which wouldnt have been an issue with the kit. what kind of work was done or another kit used ?

2. any issues with steering rack length

3. was the engine, box, harness and ecu imported from the US by yourself or is there a local company who sourced these parts?

4. will you be kind enough to do a full write up when things are up and running? I realise that pics are available but those in UK considering a similar hybrid would be very interested in your progress  ;)

more one reads, more options open up.... can\'t use "darling this only costed £50" when it comes to rex mods  :flamed

ANSWER
right i think you are confusing engines,i am using a 5.7 chevy sbc with a 600 cfm 4 barrel carb...the common engine swap in the states in the fd3s is the chevy ls1 and the hinsons kit...when fitting the sbc in the fd3 you do have hood clearence probs as the air filter comes through the hood by about 2 inches...this is because you cannot get the front pulley of the sbc any lower than the steering rack which sits very high on the fd3 set up...but thats the only major upset really.
2. any issues with steering rack length
ANSWER
no issues with the lenght of the rack as its standard..

3. was the engine, box, harness and ecu imported from the US by yourself or is there a local company who sourced these parts?
ANSWER
engine and box built in uk by a chevy specialist, and box is a th350 3 speed auto...with a manual valve body conversion...which is nothing short of awesome, means you still have three gears, but the shifter is spring loaded to return to the centre after each shift and you dont have to take your foot of the gas to change gear,so its basically a cheapish tiptronic conversion...

4. will you be kind enough to do a full write up when things are up and running? I realise that pics are available but those in UK considering a similar hybrid would be very interested in your progress  ;)
ANSWER
i will ad more pics as the car progresses,i am hoping to have it running and driving within the next couple of weeks....

i know that people like rx7s cause of the rotay difference...but its a shame theres not any more people that are prepared to do this...as it does not have to be expensive... :3gears-rh

If it wasn\'t there is a red RX in the B\'ham area that has a big V8 in from one of those new Vauxhall muscle saloons. Same lump as a Vet I think.

Met him at a pub meet, must say it fitted in very well and looked the dogs.

if its a really full on serious drag racer (which I must admit it doesn\'t look like from that shot) running on methanol it may not have a radiator. They don\'t even run water galleries in the head or block on the serious engines !

(and the quickest rotaries are still running standard mazda parts ... imagine the possibilities if they were customised to this extent) sorry kinda off topic there

Post by: tinker-27 on July 19, 2005, 08:50:06 PM
if you are thinking of putting a v8 into a fc make sure in will rev or you will need a higher ratio diff ,my fd with a rover 5.0 would do 3200 rpm@70mph which is a pain, this was with a 3.9 auto diff.most old generation v8s dont rev very well 5500-6000max,one answer is a 6speed box with .50-.62 overdrive this makes a massive difference, now with my ls1 fitted it does 1600rpm @70mph makes for very good fuel consumpsion (something most rotarys could only dream of !).hope this helps

Quote from: mushi_mushiPretty cool site, Ive spent hours trying to read it all...............

Jump on ebay.com and check out some of the eldebrook crate small blocks..........400bhp in a crate for £2k....mmmmmmmmmmmm

add another grand at least to fit it with all the ancillaries etc!

i have over 400 bhp for less than that!  and a lot easier.

well if the engine is in and driving, that is the main thing........  well done.

the bulge isnt too subtle though,  why dont you have some sort of scoop that directs air into the filter,  or a nice set of throttle bodies poking out would look good.

I\'m only going to allow you to have that scoop if you have a supercharger :D Please ensure it is fitted ASAP :rollin

i think i have seen that yellow porka before,   does it have a V8 and nos bottles in the boot?

do you have thing for V8\'s, i know how you feel, i have a thing for turbo\'s,  i got it so bad that i turbo charged my 1200cc motor bike,  which subsequently spat me off!!

what sort of power figures do you hope get?
Title: rx7 v8 project...
Post by: rxv8 on August 17, 2005, 10:34:40 PM
lol...the scoop has been made  to get me on the road really and its facing that way so the air is not getting rammed in to the filter,as if tuned  on the spot the mixture etc would be totally wrong when driving at 70 as the air is getting forced in so would make the car run lean...

I have to agree here, i hate the scoop, but if its needed, then so be it!

Wheels wise, i really do think some big fat centrelines would suit it now...with some high walled semi slicks on the rear!
The centrelines that are all metal but split in 2....like what the beetle hot rods use.

 :cool

Pleased to see its on the road.....bags of torque i bet!

Dan!!

in all seriousness,  it would be interesting as we have about the same ultimate power but he has a much broader power band, depending on his rev limit.   Mine is 8k rpm but it doesnt get on full power until 5k,

hi craig...that sounds awesome what your doing...my mate with the porsche 924 the yellow one in the photos had his 355 chevy motor dynod at 501bhp...he has just ordered the procharger from the states with water injection  also,he is hoping for 750hp with nitrous...has cost him best part of 20,000 for motor and charger...to much money to spend on a car me thinks...

car runs fine now,its pretty mad max styleeeeee...but i think it suits the car...might sell if you know anyone interested..as fancy saving up for an ls1 swap...????pm me if you want...

just thought i would bounce the theread with some more pics... had some vents custom made for the bonnet...and smoothed out the lines in the scoop...took ages of rubbing down and re skimming but got there in the end...i quite like it really, painted sayin black at present...just finishing of repairing the bumper nd then will paint it up...have also just fitted a new diff with ratio of 3.15 now so hopefully should make it better for cruising as well as for higher top speed...bonnet looks awesome in the flesh...hump seems to look big in the pic...

Won\'t you get lots of crap in your engine bay with the vents facing forward?
Title: rx7 v8 project...
Post by: RedRummy on March 06, 2006, 04:18:50 PM
yeah, you\'re gonna have to put some mesh in there to protect the shiny bits...

They had to do that to the TVR Sagaris too, and those vents were facing backwards  :)

Its still a RX7 although the die hard rotary lovers will be out-raged  ;)  yes the rotary engine makes it special but so does something different like the V8 transplant, and it looks very mean  :2Mad  :Hammer

Have you taken the \'Beast\' out on the roads yet? I wonder how the legendary Rex handling translates to a V8 conversion? When you turn the steering wheel does it just keep going straight!  :chat
Title: rx7 v8 project...
Post by: rxv8 on March 22, 2006, 06:43:57 PM
you should really look in to what your saying before you start talking rubbish...the only reason it would go straight is if i forgot to turn the steering wheel...:( infact i would say and a few people have been out in it say theres no noticeable difference...

Title: v8 conversions
Post by: tinker-27 on March 24, 2006, 11:58:10 PM
maybe some of these people saying about the v8 motor upseting the handling should maybe drive one ! , ive only driven 4 fds 3 with rotarys and mine with a ls1 ,mine was the best but only because i have spent time setting the suspension correctly and not lowering it to far,how many people cringe about fitting a different engine but drive a car on the bump stops or with wrong offset wheels etc ????
Title: rx7 v8 project...
Post by: mullins on March 25, 2006, 09:44:25 PM
I agree ^^^

A lot of people that say that sort of thing have no idea! They just look at the engine bay to see how much of the engine overhangs the front strut towers and that\'s what they make their assumption on!!!

Correctly setup front suspension can transform a car with a heavier than stock front end. I have also been in an RX-7 V8 (FC) and it handled really well for being fitted with an old school cast iron chev V8! :chat

Uhm...could I suggest that if you re-read my post of a few days ago re. FDV8 handling, you may just be able to discern that it was meant as a light-hearted joke! Unfortunately it seemed to hit a bit of a raw nerve! I think you V8 afficianado\'s should realise that many FD owners have no experience of the effect an engine conversion would have on handling and are actually just curious to know. That was certainly the reason I asked. In retrospect, I guess I should have just asked how it handled and scrapped the joke. I certainly didn\'t mean to cause any offence.   :)
