Title: Blown tip diagnosis?!?
Post by: Spotlamp on April 21, 2005, 10:20:10 PM
Can anyone tell me what the symptoms of a blown tip are?  I think I may have popped one earlier tonight.

Boost needle \'quivers\' either on boost or vacuum.  There\'s less power, and the whilst on idle which seems very low, there\'s slight vibration from the engine, as though it\'s not balanced.

I was in front of my mate at the time and I think it happened just as I engaged 3rd from 2nd.  He said there was a cloud of black smoke...

Anyway, facing the prospect of another rebuild after less than 7k on this one isn\'t appealing.  Anyone got any thoughts?

Cheers
H

Hard to start and lumpy idle are good (or bad) signs of a blown tip.

I\'d get a compression test ASAP. A cracked tip will give a zero reading on two of the faces. Best of luck!

Doesn\'t sound like it\'s going to be much else.  Checked MAP sensor this morning, couldn\'t work out whether by wiggling I pulled it off, or it was off before, suffice to say I reconnected it and started her again this morning with everything crossed, sadly the symptoms are still the same.

Wasn\'t expecting to be back in the land of rebuildsville quite so quickly, better get on with deciding who I\'d prefer to lighten my wallet :D :D

Cheers for your input guys.

I\'d still get a compression test tho, it\'s the only way to tell for certain. Would hate for you to crack the motor open only to find it wasn\'t a tip seal afterall. There\'s always hope!! :D
