Title: Turbo trouble
Post by: TRex on April 18, 2005, 06:18:47 PM
Well following on from another thread Water Leak (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13808)  I raised..

I decided to tackle the job and remove the Turbo\'s and assy to get at the water cooling pipe...

Well this is a task and a half I tell you, working from both under the car and top...
Got photos for a how to if anyone needs the pleasure of this task!

Anyway, got it all off and having an inspection of it all, found the bloody Turbine inlet manifold flange having many cracks... some quite big and all around the flange area on one side!!!!

 Anyone experienced this?

Is that a stock TII setup?  Looks abit odd.... then again I\'ve been up for 30 hours.

It\'s extreemly common, because the turbo pack is so small and there is very little surface area for the enormous amount of heat blasted through there to be radiated, they crack like that. The result is often poor boost control and even lack of boost. You should be able to pick a good condition second hand one up quite cheep.

THanks Matt, just confirmed the same from Pip...... :)

It is quite common apparently, he\'s seen a couple to say the least.  Mine is actually on the extreme end though.

Well got a month to get it sorted before the shows etc... trying to convince my family that a BiG single is the way foward instead of new carpets and another trip to Portugal....

Women just don\'t understand do they! :spank

I was going to prepare you for the cracks when you suggested you may remove the turbos last week.  I took mine in a similar condition to WGT, Pip just looked at them and said "have you had problems controlling your boost?"  Mine were worse than yours, there was a large crack between the two ports, and the round flapper wasnt sealing properly, allowing some primary boost to leak away :(

Anyway, a 2nd hand set from Pip (£300.00) has transformed the car :)

Cheers
Jon

No worries, it\'s just one of those things......

A couple guys have now come foward and are offering to dump their old gear on me... :p
Showing off that they now have a BiG and Shiney monster...
