Title: Fuel Filter-The worst job!!!
Post by: rmagictastic on April 18, 2005, 09:04:48 AM
Well i changed my fuel filter on Saturday, and i have to say it is the worst mechanical job i have ever had the pleasure of undertaking.

i spent the first 35 minutes going \'where the hell is it??\'

then i saw it!!

For a bit of background i used to be a jet engine technician, and aircraft technician in the RAF, so ive done a bit of spannering.
I have never said \'GGRRRRRRRR\' and  \'YOU F***ING S*AG\'   so many time in one day.

Baring in mind i did this under the car on my back.

Oh yes and my sub-frame now contains a 10mm socket.

My suggestion....pay someone to do this for you.

Nick

Well, you\'ve made me laugh!
I think I\'ll be paying someone after your little story.

Its not that bad, really all depends whether your partial to the taste of optimax or not. ;)

How true John......

1. take all of the skin off your fore arms.

2. pour optimax on it

Nice

oh bollards,
Just done my turbo gaskets (twice) and it passed the MOT (yippeeeeeee) but its still blowing a bit. turns out i have knocked the heat shield on part of the exhaust system which has in turn caused a slight pin hole split in the exhaust itself - if only i had\'ve known before hand i would\'nt have had to do the job twice and prob not have had the stupid jack collapse on me! - oh well......

I was looking forward to changing my fuel filter - thought it would be any easy job after my troubles above...........

may be not then!

I put the car over the pit to change the filter. Now I\'m about 6", but I couldn\'t reach the thing up over the diff! So the pile of bricks to stand on seemed like a good idea at the time.......

So if you want to avoid bricks scattered everwhere and limbs emerging from each corner of the pit, pay someone to do it!

Yup - did it myself last year. I think i spent about 2 hours under the car on my back swearing my head off. Finally managed it, and don\'t wanna do it again in a hurry!!

nah - do it yourself and save yourself some money! It\'s a pain in the butt, but it\'s not impossible. You get a sense of satisfaction once you\'ve done it!

Only took me 20 mins, just make sure you dont put the pipes back on the wrong way round! Most of it you have to do by touch whilst you hug the diff and all the fuel dribbles down onto your jumper and in your mouth! :p  If your a smoker i would advise lighting up just after! :D

OK if its no worse than changing the gearbox fluid I may give it a go then.

Must remember to get a good supply of plasters and bandages at the ready :rollin

Changed one at the weekend on Jody\'s car, got it off and it tuned out the old one was brand new  but yeah it isn\'t too difficult if you have the right tools i.e. very long nose pliers and a nice small 1/4inch rachet with short extension with 10mm socket.

True, it isnt that bad if you\'ve got the right tools, and take off both underbody shields, just a b*tch the 1st time
