Title: Intercoolers - Does it have to be an RX7 one?
Post by: Welsh Dan on April 14, 2005, 10:14:38 AM
Hi.
I\'ve been looking at intercoolers on eBay and generally, RX7 specific ones tend to be quite expensive. However, there are several people selling large front mounts for Evos, scoobys etc at half the price.
Would there be any problems with using a larger front mount for a different car? Obviously it would require custom pipework and brackets, but is there anything other than that that I need to watch out for?

I wouldn\'t have thought so, provided there\'s actually enough room up front I don\'t see why you couldn\'t get it to work. Only downside I can think of is that the pipework might get a bit complicated, generally you should try to keep the intake tract as short as possible with as few bends as possible.

I don\'t know how much of an issue it is, but one thing to bare in mind is the density of the intercooler.  What I mean is that the mouth of an RX7 is that much smaller than an Evo or Scooby AND rotary engines run hotter.

I know the Apexi GT FMIC is designed to have good through flow so that air can get to the radiator.  Obviously with an Evo or Scooby they can run more dense intercoolers as they get more air in the front anyway for cooling and don\'t run as hot.  Clear as mud?

Worth thinking about though.  No point having a decent FMIC if the rad doesn\'t get enough air to cool the engine.

I\'ve been thinking about this one aswell.
Mate of mine has just ordered a FMIC for his S14
price including hard pipe kit & brackets came to £520.00
Should be delivered next couple of days so i\'m gonna have a quick look at the size, connections etc and see if its possible to squeeze one into the Rex.

(at least it can be done without having to get under the car)!

Watch this space!

There could be problems with lag if you go too large on size. But then after looking at the size of the Apexi GT intercooler, you wont be fitting a lot bigger than that.

It mainly comes down to pipe work to and from it.

Might be worth a call to Tim @ RX Motors, he was selling a very nice Forge IC at a good price. And he is not far from you:D
