Title: Car Jacking IMPORTANT
Post by: andyrose on April 12, 2005, 01:21:14 PM
Alright roll up and call me a stupid idiot,

Changing my tyres (front on axle stands as im doing the turbo pack gaskets (again) rears on scissor jacks...............

Yes you know whats coming..............

putting rear wheel on and car topples of the rea jacks crushing my left forearm between the wheel and arch.

Didn\'t know that flesh and bone could be compressed that much!

Stopped hurting after ten mins, lucky for me I had my two way baby monitor with me.......calling the missus SOS Bloody quick but she thought i was messing about!

managed to grap by torque wrench, stuck it under the car with good hand and tried to lift the car..........it moved but not enough (adrenalin for ya - beats redbull anyday)

Had a piece of broken glass to hand - had flash backs to sky 1 and people cutting limbs off to save themselves.........

needless to say i started to panic then....

finally managed to reach under car (with good arm) and get hold of scissor jack, wound it down, shoved it under and lifted car enouth to get my arm out.

Luckly i have managed to get away with SEVERE bruising........
and a bashed ego.

Don\'t take any chances - always use axle stands (thought, it would never happen to me and look where i ended up)

Glad to hear you came away with just bruising, quite lucky!

I think I\'ll be heading out to buy some axel stands instead of just relying on the trolly jack!!

She knows I have life insurance - maybe thats why she took her time!

Thanks for your comments guys, yes it could have been alot worse as a few secs before hand I had my head under the arch and my hand right under the rear disc!

Never ever go underneath or put anything underneath a car until its properly supported on axle stands. Hydraulic jacks can blow seals.

Even if you are putting axle stands underneath, keep your head out from underneath as a car can go at any time.

Glad its just a briuised arm and ego and nothing else! Take care.

cheers

it\'s easier if you just turn the car over.  you can reach nearly any part of it, and even reach the spark plugs with ease.

OW!!!     Glad ur alright mainly mate.

Reminds me of the time I was working underneath a Citroen CX GTi Turbo II with the hydraulic suspension set to its heighest position whilst I tinkered on the exhuast!  I needed a tool from the garage so climbed out from underneath the 2 ton vehicle, and when I came back 2 minutes later the thing was sat on the floor!  I felt very sick and very stupid!  Needless to say I learnt my lesson and now never get under a car unless its absolutely necessary and 110% safe.  That was 7 years ago now!

Cheers  :wave

Oh Andy mate - close call!

I\'m glad your arm is ok. Its not fun when you have that moment of panic and realise something bad has happened.

Group buy on stands anyone? :)

Yer a lucky man Andy. Got any pics of the arm?
I almost lost my arm to a Skyline a few months ago. I\'ve got axle stands but had lent them out. Needed to change rear suspension so resorted to using the scissor jack. Lifted car, wheel off, undid the strut mounts and just as I was removing the strut - the jack toppled. Some how managed to get arm and strut out of the way as the car came down. Basically, I think I\'d lifted it too high on the scissor jack.
Nowadays though - I\'m extra cautious. Axle stands every time. Leave the trolley jack there as well in case one of the axle stands collapses. And also put a coupoe of spare wheels under the car in case the axle stands and the trolley jack collapes.

Always be extra cautious and take you time.

Pete - Having the 2nd, 3rd back up is a damn good idea. I take it you\'ve seen Final Destination ;)

pics of damaged arm will be posted as soon as the bruising is at its most colourful! \'I can see a rainbow, see a rainbow, see a rainbow too\'
will take a pic of the rear arch aswell so you can see the dent my arm caused!
Had to get my mate round to fit the sump plug, even with 4 axle stands plus 2x scissor jacks i daren\'t go under the car again.

Seems most of us have had \'lucky escapes\' in the past, glad im not the only fool out there! lol
