Title: Been spending money!
Post by: hawker182 on April 11, 2005, 08:25:29 PM
Just got off the phone and i\'m not going abroad for work so the RX stays, YAY, to celebrate i\'ve not long got home after visiting a few motorsport outlets today and now have a day of fun booked in for tomoro. Anyone removed their stock airfilter assembly? Have a nice new K&N cone sat on the dining room table :D .

Done abit of diggin around on the forums but cant seem to find any info for the Gen2. I\'m plannin to remove the flash to pass/sidelight lense but any other clever ideas to get some much needed cold air into the engine bay? anyone made a decent heat shield? Also any idea how to remove the airflow meter/air temp sensor thingy? Cant seem to get it out of the stock metal housing!

Am thinkin of routing some piping from the front bumper up into the bay but there aint much room, any ideas?

Was also thinking of taking the bodywork of the os headlamp cover and hacking a nice big hole into it then buying one of those vents and sticking that on, good idea or not lol?

Also gonna be mouting a boost gauge somewhere in the dash, any clever ideas?

And i got some nice new silicon hoses to replace the boring stock ones and some good old elbow grease to give the engine bay a much needed CLEAN :)

I     CANT     WAIT :D

Not sure if to offer congrats or not on you not getting the posting(job).
But you sound pleased anyway...  :cool

With regard to getting info on these cars in these here parts, good luck, sod all info round here dude! It\'s a shame really, you need to go across on the US forums.  Loads of info, links etc, plus they are willing to jump in and offer help/advise!

Anyway I\'ll give it a shot, removing the stock airbox is pretty simple.. why do you want to remove the airflow meter? Don\'t mess with it!
Getting cold/fresh air into the intake is rather difficult as the FC is limited with regard to room and space for a proper job.
But there are many that have done really good jobs,... take a
click here (http://fc3spro.com/TECH/MODS/IN/airfilter.htm)  as a bit more info.

Get an \'A\' Pillar Pod for any gauges instead of stick/drilling em all over the dash etc.

Silicon hoses are always a good mod for both purpose and \'bLiNg\'!

 Good luck

Excellent that link has helped alot cheers ;)

Yeah gonna try and fit a heatshield around the bottom and side of the filter with a cold air feed. Not quite sure how or where yet but am planning on spending all day at it tomor, will let ya know what i come up with.

Yeah think an A piller pod is the way to go, dont really wanna go drilling holes in the dash, see if i can pick one up tomor. And yeah the silicon hoses should look pretty cool as well as lasting a lifetime. Wanna try and get her up to scratch for RS

Good man..

Take some snaps as you go along with any mods you do or come up with etc so as to maybe build a nice \'how to\'s\' file.

 .............. A pillar Pods are £10 for single - £30. for Tripple.

Dash Pods or standard console type are half those prices dude...

 How cheap is that!

Hope it comes out sweet really, but for that sort of money I\'ll buy a few. I\'ll deffo try something first but if the purchase cost factor is low, than I\'ll put out the dosh and get the proper thing.
Because sometimes by cutting cost, the CAR ends up looking cheap for the sake of a few bob!

As the chinese say. " Good ting no cheap, cheap ting no good"!

put it this way - not cheap enough for me !

im moving the cd player into the lower part of the console - then hoping to put 3 gauges above them

at the end of the day - its a tiny project - if it looks bad - then im the only person to blame - BUT - if you all like the idea - i thought of it first ( well ok i probably didnt !! )

i have the card board template all ready cut out - just need to transfer that to some metal and get the dremel out

i will take some pics as i do it

i like cheap mods :)

Grinder, glad you got the car sorted (M.O.T.)....

HAve you done the work yourself? Did you buy new sills or what meterials etc........ What did you use to reprotect the underneath now that it\'s done?
Any shots of anything what it was like or how it is now...

yeah the car passed its MOT just fine !!

i did all the work my self - couldnt afford for someone else to do the work

the maths was 20 holes at 30 a hole - £600 - errr no thanks !!

search for a thread called "rusty rusty rust" - thats the passenger side - the drivers wasnt as bad - but still took some plating up

all the welding was done with 0.8mm MIG wire and 1mm metal plating - the rusty bits were found by using a crowbar and a chisel - it it was loose or looked weak - i smashed the hell out of it - this is a job i only wanted to do once - the damage i did was amazing - hole just opened up from nowhere

put it this way - i found one hole i just JUST get my little finger thru - but to get back to solid metal - it ended up about 8 inches long and 4 inches wide :(

cost me £3 for the metal - 6 foot by 18inchs , that was just cut to shape and welded in

where i welded the inside - that got 2 coats of hammerite ( smooth ) - looks really nice ( under the carpet !! )

the underside - all the rusty coloured stuff got 2 coats of the above and then the new metal and the hammerite got 2 coats of hammerite underseal with added waxoyl ( from halfrauds - £5 a tin )

i would advise any TII owner to get under there car NOW and have a real good look round - if its nice and sold - spend a few hours and £5 and re-underseal the car

thats what im going to do every year from now on - id rather spend £5 than 7 days welding the thing back together !!

and thats enough from me !! LOL

Ha ha I know what you mean dude..

I have 3 FC\'s, One is mint and solid underneath and everywhere!
(EGI).
ANd the T 2\'s..... well one has some damage at the front underbody from some k*ob placing the jack in the wrong place and the jack pratically went through the flooring!
The other is fecked big style along where the floor pan joins the sills, yes yes the usual place!
Again like you, found 2 small holes..... put it through an MoT last week  and it turned out to be the whole lenghts of the sills that are shag*ed on both sides........ did not expect that at all!!!!

Anyways, getting that car done tomorrow and the other on Thursday.  Thought about having a go myself but thats just to much hassel, if I had a pit or a lift then I might, but it will be a bast*rd laying on the floor welding and shaping...  sod it...

So I decided no DIY............ PSE instead............

Gonna lace it with hammerite as well when it\'s all done!

PITA but it\'s gotta be done! :bandit

will i did all mine on the drive way - no garage or nothing :(

it funny - cause i had an EGI and that was solid underneath - passed its MOT no probs - maybe they lightened the chassis too much on the TII inregards the weight saving and made it too thin ??

and i did put my jack thru the floor ( front driver side jacking point ) - thats what started all this off

all i way doing is checking the front bearings :(

im not bothered - its MOT and thats all that matters !!!

Stu

Just searched and saw your thread \'RUSTY RUSTY RUST\'.

Feck me fellar, grand job you did there :god  Respect.....

I see you done it mostly from the insides of the car(welding)..
looks pretty good job.  The best thing now is that you know what you\'ve done and cause it\'s for you, you would of taken that extra little care on details to make it right and also last and last as you sure as hell do not want to do that again, hell no!

Top marks on the photos too......... Gives peeps some hope if they find themselves in a hole one day..(sorry..lol)

Good stuff dude, now feck off from the PC and get them bits and toys fitted to the car................ :p

Wow this thread grew lol :)

Nice job on the welding, had my car up on 4axle stands all day whilst faffing with it and didnt come across any holes but then i didnt delve to deep. I i find some in the future may be paying a visit to chorley with a six pack ;)

funny bout the boost gauge aswell, i have mounted mine above the stereo lol was dead easy to do, and actually fitting the thing and getting it working took about 2mins.

Whilst the car was up though i did find some holes in my backboxes  so went and brought some Gun Gum and made a sleeve and had fun patching them up, seems to have worked will find out when i take her for a spin in the morn lol

Also the airbox assembly is easy enough to remove just need to buy an adaptor as mine is pre 89 so have the square fittment on the airflow meter with the flap inside, didnt know this at the time so the k&N\'s still on the table. Are they universal? or will i have to order an RX7 specific.

All in all though a good day learnt alot about the cars mechanical and electrical systems, changed alot of the hoses for coloured silicon ones too so startin to look a bit bling too.

Plan for tomro is to get the K&N cone fitted, some sort of heatshield for it, need to find somewhere to buy a vented headlight cover, any1 know of any links?

Also gonna try and get my headrest speakers working cause they aint at the mo, have no idea where to start, suppose just work from the speakers backwards till i find the problem.

Will try and get some pics done soon cause i am pretty proud of my achievments, seein as i am just an enthusiast and no expert!

Yeah am waiting to borrow a mates camera but will get some piccies done asap. Also went to get a airflow adaptor today but it was gonna take a week to get it. Luckily for me they showed me a complete pipercross metal mesh induction kit which came with the right fitment...bizzare! so as i just couldnt wait forked out £100 and brought it, drove home very quickly and got it fitted in about 15mins. Boy oh Boy :D :D :D  my car now makes the most awsome noise, its like a f****n jet plane taking off and when the turbo starts sucking :D :D :D :D . On a more sensible note though it has improved performance throughout the revs more than i thought it would. Deffinetly get yourself a cone under there. Have removed the flash to pass lense and that seems to help alot, just gotta construct a heatshield and try and get another cold air feed in there and it\'ll be SORTED! People just turn and look at me coming down the road and you can see them thinking "what the hell is that" I LOVE IT

Now tomor\'s job change brake pads, paint the calipers and service the IC and do an oil change. Never got round to sortin my headrest speakers, was to excited about my new induction kit lol

Will get some piccies up asap

Oh and the boost gauge, just fed the hose through a gromit in the firewall just above the acc pedal, pulled off the boost sensor vacuum hose and connected my new clear hose to the fitment already there (number 14 in the diagram) then fed the hose into the dash stuck it onto the back of the boost gauge, connected the lights to the lighters +/- and voila!

Then just fabricated a bit of plastic to size heated it and bent it to the right shape so it slots in above the stereo, nice and snug ;)  cut out a hole stuck the boost gauge in, again nice and snug ;)  and jobs a good\'n. Just cable tied the hose in the engine bay and behind the dash to keep it out of trouble!

Right just took me about half hour to sort those bolts lol but got the box lid off and yeah its a yellow filter, take it this is stock? just off to my local DIY supermarket to build my new cold air box. Gonna look abit like this but better ;)  found this picture on fc3s.org.

Also fitted a BOV valve today, a bailey dumpvalve all shiney and WHOOOSHY. Makes a noticable difference got it at a bargain price though, my fraudulent mate now works in the ripspeed section at halfrauds....tis all good ;)

Will post pics as i go getting a camera tonight
