Ive got a question to put to everyone, please. Would you be more or less inclined to purchase an FD3S RX-7 twin turbo 92 J-
reg if:
The engine had been rebuilt 12 months ago and mild ported
OR
If it had just been given a standard rebuild 12 months ago?
The mild port would have been carried out by RX-7 specialists Haywood Rotary.
What do you all think?
cheers
I think the key thing is for the rebuild not matter if its been ported or not.
Porting does change the engine note and the performance characteristics of the car. But it depends on if you want a more powerful modified RX7?
My thought anyway. :)
i would probally go for the ported one :)
think if you were in the market for a rx, i think it would come down to cost. A rebuilt car will always sell ported or not, its one less cost for the nxt buyer
It depends if the port needed any additional modifications - fuelling etc and if they had been done or not - not sure what a mild port needs.
How\'s the buyer to know that the owner didn\'t abuse the new porting without the proper modifications.
I think the port adds an extra level of possible complexity / confusion which may alienate first time FD buyers, but to those in the know, it shouldn\'t worry as much.
If you\'re having the rebuild done anyway, I\'d get the porting done and then you can sell it with the porting as a positive element.
Cheers for your thoughts guys. I\'ve got my engine in at the moment being rebuilt. I know its sensible to get the port done now whilst the engine open, but I dont know if I\'ll be able to afford the £700 or so on top to get an Apexi ECU and have it fitted. I also really need alloy wheel overhul (rechromed) but they are split rims and seem to cost about £600 (£150 each). Then theres the stereo that needs sorting (£500 minimum) and thats after the rebuild cost and insurance, tax, mot and breakdown cover £3300, and there are bound to be a few more buts this year. Thats over £5K which is a third of my yearly wage! So, I was thinking, unless the mild port was to add value to the sale of the car, I would probably have to leave it.
Chris, a mild port requires an Apexi and a mapping to get the most out of it, but can be run safely for a while without any further mods.
Oh, and to make matters more complicated, I may well have to sell her next year to make way for a house. :(
I\'d go with the rebuild done by Carl Hayward, all things considered it will be a safer bet than the one you dont know who built it.
Cheers Brett, but it was more of a hyperthetical question aimed toward those who would be buying my rex in 12 months time after I had an engine rebuild done and left standard, or had the rebuild done with a mild port. What do you recon - does the port make the car more or less attractive to prespective buyers and would the poring add any value to the vehicle come sale time?
Cheers :)
I would not go for it.
I was in the same boat as you when I bought mine. The engine got rebuilt when I bought it. I could have had it ported but the extra cost was to much.
You\'ll never get back what you spent on the car.
There is also the fact that when I bought the car I was new to the rotary and did not want to buy a modded car.
I doubt you would regain the extra £1000 it would cost, I think you would at best make the car more desirable to the right person.
Dude, if you can afford it, just get it ported. The power and torque gains from a port are fantastic. I would always buy a ported car first, as long as whoever did the porting had kept safety in mind when they\'d done it and made sure that the fueling was keeping up.
