Title: Oil leak, but where from?
Post by: Trevrx on April 05, 2005, 07:00:17 PM
Hi all,
My engine was re-built about 1200 miles ago and still has 11 months warranty.  My mechanic changed engine, gearbox, diff oils on Saturday and said the car is leaking engine oil.

Looking with the car on a four poster,  the shiny tray under the gearbox is wet with black engine oil and it\'s also on the centre cat and smokes slightly when it gets hot.  I wiped it all off thinking it might be from before the re-build, but it\'s back already, so deffo leaking from somewhere although there\'s nothing visibly obvious.

He thinks it could be the rear engine oil seal, but aren\'t they re-newed in the rebuild?   Are there any other common places to look for?
I wonder if it\'s covered on the warranty, but then again I dont want to trouble them if it\'s something easy I can do myself.
Any advice appreciated,
Cheers,

they should be replaced during rebuild but seem to be notorious leaking points.

hi mate i have got the same problem. A guy who i know who has been rebuilding rotaries for years now said that it is the rear engine oil seal which is located behind the flywheel i think he said. but he said some people dont replace this seal when they rebuild em cos mine has been rebuilt about 9000 miles ago and is leaking now.

hope this helps mate. i know it is a clutch out job anyway thats what he told me. good job i need to replace my clutch then int it. ;)

hope this helps pal

How about trying Millers Stop Leak (or Forte or Lucas ones). Millers Oils stuff tends to be really good, and they produce about the only Octane boost that works. I know a guy who has used it in a highly modded Supra to cure a leaking seal and it worked. There\'s no reason why there should be any ill effects and it would at least be a good stop gap until the time comes when you\'ve got the clutch out to replace it anyway.
