Title: Turbo issues, TII
Post by: Brett on April 02, 2005, 09:18:08 PM
Right, I will hopefully be getting my TII running next weekend.

However I have a fwe issues/questions that need some answers from those in the know.  (its a \'91 model)
The car was left semi assembled fro around 3-4 years so I\'m expecting all sorts of fun from the vacuum operated parts.
I\'d like to know what to expect if the flap/valve operation inside the manifold does not function.  I presume this will affect turbo spool up time, as the car wont be road worthy I cant rd test it.  What readings should I get on a boost gauge if its functioning correctly?  And where in the rev range will the boost start to build?

Are there any other little demons I should be looking for in the turbo pipe work?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
The turbo II doesnt have any flaps or controls in the manifold like the egi 6 port.   The only valve is the small round one which cant really fail and is more to do with emmissions and the air pump which you dont need either.

The only flap is the throttle body butterfly which should work!

The dash boost guage can vary from car to car,  it can read half way up or off the scale.  Your best bet is to fit a cheap independant boost guage to the inlet manifold and it should see 7psi (0.45b) with a standard exhaust, a little more with a big exhaust and an air filter but you will probably boost cut in the higher gears if you hit 8psi.    You should see most of your boost by 3k rpm, a  little later with a bigger exhaust.   I have a boost cut defender should you need as i have taken it off my TII becuae the microtec doesnt need it, it will stop your ecu boost cutting.   I also have a stock turbo in excellent condition with no shaft play or smoking should you find yours is a little worse for wear.

Good luck

Regards
Tony

I was talking exhaust to turbo manifold.  I\'d seen some sort of device in the diagrams etc the variable flow into the impellor vanes.

thanks for the offer on the parts, I will know by next weekend if I\'ll need them.

The S4 used a twin scroll setup, same as you suggest. No worries with the S5.

Thanks john + antnicuk,

out of interest were there any variations in the engine/turbo layout and ancillaries during the Turbo 2\'s modell life?

At Brooklands today I saw several TII\'s, but none had provision for the valve on top of the inlet manifold. (Presume its exhaust gas recirculation)

My car is a Feb 91 model.

Hi Brett,
Yes there are several variations between the two. I don´t recognise what you describe though. Turbo unit differences:

S4- Smaller turbine.
S4- Twin scroll sytem utilising an actuator controlled flap at the rear of the manifold.
S4/S5-Different manifold design.
S5- Higher boost pressure maintained with the S5 turbo.

I\'ll try to get some pictures of what I mean tomorrow.

Remember that the series 4 wasnt made in this country only Japan and USA, so if your car is a uk model it will be a series 5 Turbo II,  the series 4 is 86 - 88 and sometimes called the turbo 1.  so yours is a series 5 by the looks of it.

The turbo II doesnt have any flappy bits in the exhaust or manifold unless  you are thinking of the actuator which controls the wastegate.  But that is all part of the turbo unit.

Thanks!  Reason I was asking was becasue when I got hold of the car it was 75% reassembled, and I didnt fancy stripping it all out again just to check inside the exhaust manifold.

Again, thanks to you both for your help. :)
