Title: FD3S Help - removing rats nest to get to oil metering pipes
Post by: petemillis on March 28, 2005, 07:48:28 PM
Please help before I top myself!

I\'ve got a small oil leak which we (Tim at RX Motors) and I believe is coming from a damaged oil metering pipe (the plastic ones under the rats nest).

Today I have removed the throttle body, vac chamber and other bits, to get to the rats nest. There are 3 screws holding the metal pipework to a bracket which is in turn held in place by 2 nuts. One of the 3 screws has got a mullered head and can\'t be undone. I need to remove the rats nest to get to the plastic oil pipes. How the feck can I do it? I was hoping I might be able to just undo the 2 nuts but when I remove them nothing else moves anyway!

I\'ve had it up to my eyeballs with this today. Can someone please make me feel better, or better still come round to my house for endless cups of tea in payment for doing the job for me.

Unlucky Pete, changing the OMP lines is a very tricky task indeed:( Now I would offer my services, but being over 200miles from you is a little far no matter how good your cups of tea are:D ;)

I\'d say with doing this sort of thing there are no real short cuts to be taken, as they will usually end in tears, so best best bet is to try and remove as much stuff outta the way as possible.

Good luck m8 and i\'ve snapped an OMP line in the past:rolleyes: , although luckily for me the engine was still out of the car at the time.

Paul:)

Cheers Paul. There could always be biscuits to go with tea if that\'s more tempting :rollin
I saw the thread on your busted pipe. Now that I\'ve got the top off I\'m thinking that if I can get that bracket stuff for the rats nest out of the way then it might not be too bad. It\'s just with that buggered screw I know it ain\'t going to be easy. Thinking I might just drill the top off the screw and put a new one in - probably my best bet. Also I think I\'ll just pull off the rats nest pipes and hope that gives a clearer view of things. There\'s plenty of photies on the forum to help with putting them back on so that shouldn\'t be a prob.
Out of interest, how long are the little oil pipes, and once the rats nest is out of the way are both end quite accessible?
I know what sort of pipe to use - it\'s the sae as the carb breather pipe on my motorcycle and my local bike place have got loads of it in stock in varying diameters.
Something else I noticed, the plastic sheath for the wires that are floating around down there is brittle as cream cracker, so I\'ll be delving in with some self-amalgamting tape. Wonder if this brittleness is common?

Crimping the ends is a bit of a task, Tim can probably send you a good second hand set. Be careful with the fragile plastic shrouds as if you snap them, they tend to take the wire with them. The looms are crap... just to emphasise the point... might be worth removing the old crappy plastic along with all the bits that get everywhere and redressing the loom checking for breakages. Try not to rip the "rat\'s nest" out as it too is fragile. The solenoids never glue back together properly, don\'t even waste your time trying.

Hope that\'s not too misserible and condesending a reply... there\'s just no way of dressing it up and making it sound exciting/easy! :cool Good luck Pete

Anyone got a spare check valve - the larger one that fits in the pipe just under the right hand side near the throttle body. Feckin\' thing - the end snapped off - Superglue???

Actually....anybody got a car trailer I can borrow? Matt, I\'m now thinking I might just pop it down to Tim. I knew I should have taken him up on his offer of letting me do the job there so there would be plenty of helpful advice on hand. It\'s my bloody Mrs though - wanted me back home to help with the kids - bless \'em!

I\'d love to carry this on tomorrow but got another RX to pick up from Sarfampton.........

Matt, what ends need crimping? The oil lines? I were kinda hoping they were push fit jobbies....
Can I fix the whole lot in one go with a hammer?
Think I should have done an Arfur Daly an\' just bunged some wood shavings under the rats nest to soak up the oil!

I got a secondhand one from RX Motors, like Matt said much better than trying to put new pipes on the existing fittings:)

Good luck with it Pete, and yep you should of taken tim up on his offer!;)

Paul

P.S. Matt: Where\'s me rear efini logo? i had some 2ndhand rotors sent out last week, but the badge i also paid for was no where to be seen:( Pete may have asked about it:confused: Ta, Paul:)

Paul, I still haven\'t been down to Tim\'s again yet. Just going out the door now to pick up this...so maybe I\'ll combine a trip to RX Motors as I\'ll be down Southampton anyway.
