Title: Blue smoke?
Post by: Tim Oldland on March 16, 2005, 09:12:23 AM
Is it normal for the RX7 to give out a little puff of blue smoke on startup?

It doesn\'t happen all the time, only after its been left for a couple of days....

I\'m new to the rotary, so i need to know these things!

Cheers,

Tim

Hi Tim,

This is normal - the rotary uses oil (as you\'ve probably noticed) injected into the combustion chamber (provides compression and lubrication).  This is a small amount and is burnt off in normal running.  At startup there is a little extra in there to burn off so it smokes for a short while.

:)

Yeah, completely normal as far as I know. I wouldn\'t be surprised if the oil injectors seep a bit into the rotor chambers when the motor is shut off. You should\'ve seen the sh*t that came out of my exhaust after 10 months of storage!

Should have a higher vmax now then without the old \'air brake\' on ;)
